Pulp – Party Hard Lyrics 14 years ago
Does anyone else feel the lyrics could be about something deeper than being bored of partying?

I reckon it could be about unrequited love. He loves a woman, she used to love him but nothing happened because all of a sudden she moved onto someone else. It uses the backdrop of a party to symbolise the mundane ritual of love.

"Entertainment can sometimes be hard when the thing
that you love is the same thing that's holding you down"

He loves her but she is clearly holding him back from finding someone else because he's so fixated on her.

"This man is dangerous, he just shed his load on your best party frock"

The other guy has shown his intent, he is "dangerous" whilst the narrator is boring.

"I was having a whale of a time until
your uncle Psychosis arrived."

He was happy until she decided she liked someone else. There was just no logic behind her actions.

"I'm here whenever you need me & whenever you need me I won't be here."

He still wants her, but at the same time, he should sack her off considering how she's treated him. He's in two minds.

"If you didn't come to party then why did you come here?"

If she doesn't love him any more what was the point of even trying with him? Why waste all that time just to decide that he's not worthy of her?

"When the party's over will you come home with me?"

When she breaks up with the other guy, could there still be a chance of him and her getting together?

It's probably because I'm going through something similar at the minute and I've been listening to This Is Hardcore a lot recently, but when I listened to the lyrics something just clicked.

The Smiths – How Soon Is Now? Lyrics 14 years ago
I've always seen this song about unrequited love. The line about going to the club is particularly striking, because it's as if he's saying that the person is miserable for not finding someone whilst out clubbing, and they wouldn't be in this state of unhappiness had they loved the narrator back.

Radiohead – Paranoid Android Lyrics 14 years ago
This is one of those great songs that have 1000s of interpretations linked to them because the lyrics are so ambiguous. They could mean anything. I have a few theories and one of them is about someone being driven insane from what they think is unrequited love. The title stems from the paranoia that the one they love hates them, and feels that they have no personality, like a robot. An android. This person loves the other so much and it hurts them that they feel they are not loved back. It follows the person falling out of love and the feelings of bitterness which surrounds it, ranging from uncomfortability to a nervous breakdown to acceptance.

"Please could you stop the noise, I'm trying to get some rest
From all the unborn chicken voices in my head"

It's almost like the person hates to see the one they love having fun in front of them, enjoying themselves with other people. It makes them jealous and insecure. They want to relax, not have to put up with these negative feelings. Birth is associated with love, and the unborn chicken voices part relates to the thought of being with the one they love, as it makes them feel worse just thinking about the impossibility of a relationship.

"What's that, what's that?"

This is talking about the mioxed feelings in regards to the situation. Should they resent the person for making them feel this way, or should they keep on obsessing over them. They're unsure what to do.

"When I am king you will be first against the wall
With your opinion which is of no consequence at all"

The word "king" represents happiness. It shines a ray of optimistic light on the situation, that eventually they will have moved on. When their life is sorted out, and when the object of affection is a distant memory, they will feel nothing but pity for them. They will no longer matter to the protagonist because it was their loss, and the protagonist is in a better place. Almost as if they're saying "fuck you, I'm going to be happy however you make me feel"

"Ambition makes you look pretty ugly
Kicking, squealing, Gucci little piggy"

The object of affection's happiness, desire and ambition makes the protagonist feel uncomfortable because they know that the other person are showing signs of happiness without them. They bitterly say that they look ugly as a sort of way of dealing with the thing. No matter how happy they will be in their materialistic lives, they will still be a pathetic person.

"You don't remember, you don't remember
Why don't you remember my name?
Off with his head, man, off with his head, man
Why don't you remember my name?
I guess he does"

Now here the narrator is finally bursting into a fit of anger that the person doesn't love them. They've been hiding this behind a wall of faux indifference in the past few verses. They've almost accepted the belief that the object of affection hates them, and is mocking their resentment when Thom sings "off with his head, man, off with his head". The protagonist at this point is so wrapped up by insecurity that he feels the other person doesn't know who they are, or has forgotten them. "I guess he does" = At least other people know who the narrator is. A sort of "I don't care, other people have time form ,e what makes you so important?"

"Rain down, rain down, come on rain down on me
From a great height, from a great height, height
Rain down, rain down, come on rain down on me
From a great height, from a great height, height"

Acceptance that the person doesn't love them, and the narrator is carrying a nothing-to-lose attitude. "Rain down on me, it couldn't be worse than it already is, I've hit rock bottom, so fuck it"

"That's it sir, you're leaving
The crackle of pig skin
The dust and the screaming
The yuppies networking
The panic, the vomit
The panic, the vomit
God loves his children
God loves his children, yeah"

The narrator is leaving this state of mind. They are no longer putting up with blurred vision on the world due to one person, and the negative feelings they have had inflicted on them. They feel that they are better than the object of desire, a smug attitude carried by "yuppies". They're done worrying and feeling nervous about the whole situation, and they're saying "thank God that's over".

Not saying this is the official meaning of the song, it probably isn't, but I think generally speaking Paranoid Android does a fantastic job of tapping into the insecurities of the human psyche. Whatever the causes are, it's up to the listener I suppose.

The Smiths – The Queen Is Dead Lyrics 15 years ago
I always saw this song as a general social commentary on modern Britain. It uses imagery of typically British things such as the royal family, pubs and the Daily Mail. It has a feel of "broken Britain" about it, this is most obvious in the line "Oh has the world changed, or have I changed?" - Morrissey grew up with old fashioned values and in recent times those values have been compromised.

Morrissey is anti-Monarchist, and I think this contributes to Morrissey's attack on modern Britain - the line about Charles appearing on the front of the Daily Mail - two things that are wrong with Britain in Morrissey's eyes. It's a very sarcastic, dry humoured line.

The line about Morrissey playing piano...not sure what that might mean but I get the feeling he's trying to say "well, it could be worse". The Queen think he isn't a good singer - things are bleak - but if you think that's bad, then look at it this way - at least he's not playing piano.

"Life is very long when you're lonely" - Probably a reference to how Morrissey feels alone in his views, he's looking from the outside in and it's taking a strain on him.

Anyway, a great song. Hypnotic rhythms, again some great guitar work from Marr and some fantastic stream-of-consciousness lyrics from Moz.

The Strokes – Heart In A Cage Lyrics 16 years ago
I've always interpreted this song as being hopelessly in love with someone, touching on unrequited love.

"The heart beats it's a cage" - That feeling where you're head over heels in love with someone but they don't seem to love you back so your "beating heart" feels restricted, as if it's "in a cage".

The best line though:

"I went to the concert and I
Fought through the crowd
Guess I got too excited when I
Thought you were around"

Just sums up how desperate things can be when love is a one-way street.

Blur – The Universal Lyrics 18 years ago
Does anyone else think this is about 1984?

"Every night we're gone
And to karaoke songs
How we like to sing a long
Although the words are wrong"

The Ministry of Truth composed propaganda songs. They were blatantly made to avoid treason but the citizens of Oceania liked the Music anyway.

"No one here is alone, satellites in every home"

A reference to Telescreens. "Big Brother is watching you."

"Every paper that you read
Says tomorrow is your lucky day"

Again, propaganda from the Ministry of Truth. How feeling hate is illegal in Oceania and eveyone needs to be happy. Everyone is told that Big Brother is the best person alive.

Manic Street Preachers – Faster Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is one of the most songs the Manics have done. My interpretation of it is Richey saying to the rest of the world "Fuck you, it's MY life, I'll live it how I please, you have no say in it" and I think everyone's been in a situation bfore where they've been put down for doing their own thing. Conformity is also a strong theme in this song and it gives out a message: 'Be yourself'. "I know I believe in nothing but it is my nothing" is Richey saying that, yes, he is a depressing person but that's just who he is and nothing will change that. "Life is for the cold made warm and they are just lizards" is about how some people are only happy when they "fit in" or change who they are. The last line speaks of how easy it is to follow the crowd but you will never be truly happy if you do.

My two cents anyway.

Oh, and SonicDM, you're a moron if you think The Clash weren't political. But then again, you "believe the hype" so I think enough has been said about your knowledge of music.

Cloudgazer, you're the fucking moron here mate. Bands singing about politics et al are usually very intelligen, and if a good band sings about serious issues instead of the stupid things AM sing about, then they're educating thousands. I bet you're one of those people who don't give a shit about anything except getting pissed and stoned. I can tell by your grammar. And so the fuck what if politics may be all over the Music Channels? The Arctic Monkeys are all over the News, when they should be on the Music Channels (Using your logic).

Now, go and bottle the bands off at a political concert. Since you feel that way about intelligent music.

I can see the NME fanboys are in a mood because they've realised there are other bands besides what NME says is good. I'll list some bands that aren't this overhyped Indie shit, that you can listen to before it's too late:

Dinosaur Jr
The Smiths
Smashing Pumpkins
Super Furry Animals
Foo Fighters
Queens Of The Stone Age
Eagles Of Death Metal
The Strokes
Radiohead
The White Stripes
The Darkness
Primus
Weezer

Some of the above you might consider to be overrated but at least they aren't bland, generic Indie who, just because NME calls them the "saviours of Rock", much like every band they rave about, then they are.

Don't believe the hype. Though some of you scenesters have already fallen victim.

Seriously. I bet you people are teenagers who blow their money on NME every week. I bet you also loved Kaiser Chiefs, The Killers, Razorlight and Franz Ferdinand beforehand, until NME moved onto a new Indie band to arselick. Face it, childerent, ARTIC MONKEYS ARE AVERAGE, AT BEST. Some good Indie bands include Amusement Parks On Fire, Cherubs and The Rakes, but of course, because they're not fully worshipped by NME you probably feel they're boring. And whoever called them the voice of this generation, I bet they look good when they put the crack down, because singing about some girl doesn't really qualify. If they sung about real world issues, like war, fascism and bullying, then I might believe them. But they don't.

And next month, buy Q instead. It'll save your life, believe me.

Queens of the Stone Age – Regular John Lyrics 20 years ago
I think it's about a stalker who becomes obsessed with a prostitute. The line "Your home number's on the wall" suggests she's a call girl and "Where's your daddy now" might point to the broken ome that prostitutes are stereotyped to have grown up in. e wants a relationship with the prostitute and she rejects him painfully. The knife line, I think, is a metaphor for the nastiness in people. The guy's 'knife' is his creepiness, and the girl's is the vindictive way she rejected him.
