I think this is a fantastic song and one of the last really great ones Moz wrote.
Could be about Johnny, could be about a crime, but my take on it is this concerns the determination of certain people (particularly bin dipper journalist types) to 'get something' on Morrissey, the constant speculation and innuendo around his sexual orientation, the scramble for tittle tattle etc.
Morrissey absolutely cannot abide this and could end it by 'coming clean' about something that would sate the pack of wolfhounds, but he clearly loves the person involved too much to throw him/her under the bus. Coming clean would mean complication for this other person as well as Morrissey, so he'd rather put up with the intrusion and hassle.
I've been in a situation precisely like that (not media intrusion of course but common garden nosey types) and chose to protect somebody else and put up with all sorts of crap, rather than compromise somebody I don't think could have handled it. So I've always had an enormous soft spot for this song. |

Great tune from Lloyd, the best on Easy Pieces.
This strikes me as being about a lad who has been dumped due to some indiscretion (infidelity, bad behaviour?) and pines for her to return. Conversely he also knows that not only is she unlikely to come back, he's aware of his knack for screwing up and that he probably doesn't deserve her anyway - don't let me make you blue too.
I wonder how autobiographical it is - could well be a personal tale. |

@[losttango:54949] yeah I love this song, it's beautifully written. This is the tendency of people to wallow and romanticise their pain... |

I wrote this when a music couple I had been 'friendly' with were on the verge of breaking up. Anyway the girl in this setup tried roping me in as a 'third wheel' to wind the fella up. The besotted was not amused to put it mildly... |

when I wrote this song I pondered/mused something....doing the 'right' or 'virtuous' thing often goes completely unrewarded and in fact the outcomes people want in life are almost never achieved by being 'good' or whatever.
Good outcomes are almost never earned, they tend to be 'leveraged' in some way or other. |

Social expectation has a lot to answer for, the line 'unruly girls who will not settle down' is a killer here.
Sometimes parents want to live vicariously through their children, rather than let them individuate. |

as the writer of this I'd be interested to know what you think is going on and the more subtle meaning of this piece is...? |

Love this song - the search to look for a flicker of humanity from a notorious 'cold fish' can often turn into a chess match or, in this equally good metaphor, a 'who blinks first' card game. Nice lyrics... |

I love this song. There's a cautionary tale here about how few 'real friends' we all have. Somebody might be a right laugh but perhaps not someone to lean on in a time of need or share your dark secret with. We'll probably have fewer than 10 real friends in our lifetime and many fail the medical due to weakness, vanity etc. |

I heard a song about the nature of dreaming, about lucid dreams, how you remember them and seek to take meaning.
There are so many ideas about dreams and the dream world out there, who and what's correct is anyone's guess... |

if you've ever been in that dreamy/loved up/besotted state for a person then you really don't want anybody else. In fact the thought of going with anybody else feels weird and a bit wrong. Morrissey is clearly articulating feelings around being in that state, there is one person he wants to be with and there really is nobody else he is interested in. |

I've read Bernard's book and isn't this about Factory Records? He felt they weren't getting the fruits of their labour and the label was taking an enormous chunk of their cash, partly to fill a black whole called the Hacienda. Even when it was full it lost money as people weren't there to drink what was behind the bar. Something else I can't put my finger on.
But yeah I'm sure this song is about Bernard feeling ripped off and sarcastically intoning Wilson's refrain of "you're not starving to death so what have you got to complain about?" |

I'm pretty sure this song is aimed either at an ex (who he wishes he wasn't his ex) or maybe an unrequited love object. It has an idealistic vision of love underpinning it and yet an angry/bitter tone at the same time. The narrator is snearing at the subject's cracks, wrinkles and vanity, while also suggesting that whatever has (or hasn't happened) has driven him to alcohol and pills. Bernard does have a certain way of reacting to things not going his way (see about half of Technique). |

A lot of Bernard's lyrics are essentially alphabites stuck together, if the words rhyme that's the main thing.
But...there's usually an essential meaning behind the song, I get feeling this is about an unpleasant and unsuccessful relationship in which Bernard feels he has been the injured party (funnily enough I can't remember one where he plays the role of the perpetrator or bad actor, he should have written a couple). Sounds like the song is through the lens of a trauma bonded person who has chosen to walk away and settle on the narrative that they were the victim and this other person is the perpetrator. |

| Madness – One's Second Thoughtlessness Lyrics

I love this song, it's my favourite by this band. Madness should have done a few more like this.
As for the theme I'm getting 'sneak thief' vibes here, perhaps the protagonist is desparate or has an addiction. Anyway if people in that situation resort to theft they tend to betray those closest to them - friends, family etc.
It sounds like he's caught in the act at some stage and starts reeling off his catalogue of excuses as to why he did it. |
