Shellshock Lyrics
That's the way - Shellshock
Hold on!It's never enough
It's never enough until your heart stops beating
The deeper you get, the sweeter the pain
Don't give up the game until your heart stops beating
You call me on the phone, you left me all alone
All I get from you is shellshock
Another day goes by and all I do is cry
All I get from you is shellshock
I'd tell the world and save my soul
But rain falls down and I feel cold
A cold that sleeps within my heart
It tears the earth and sun apart
But that's the way that I can win
A victim of your evil sin
You've lost the hold you've had on me
By causing the changes that you never see
Hold on! It's never enough
It's never enough until your heart stops beating
The deeper you get, the sweeter the pain
Don't give up the game until your heart stops beating
When we walk through open doorways,
Counting time in one or more ways
We can't find our peace of mind
And life becomes a life of crime
And that's the day I call your name
I came to you, I called in vain
You lost the faith within your heart
The fire in your soul from the end to the start
Hold on!It's never enough
It's never enough until your heart stops beating
The deeper you get, the sweeter the pain
Don't give up the game until your heart stops beating
I've been good and I've been bad
But common sense I've never had
No matter how I try and try,
I hide the truth behind a lie
But that's the way that I can win
A victim of your evil sin
You lost the faith within your heart
The fire in your soul from the end to the start
Hold on!It's never enough
It's never enough until your heart stops beating
The deeper you get, the sweeter the pain
Don't give up the game until your heart stops beating

Duckie on a bike in "Pretty in Pink."
Bloody good song this, so many different sounds at once throughout the whole song, one of my favourite N.o songs !!
"It's never enough - it's never enough until your heart stops beating!" New Order rocks!
This song has me in a ball of confusion. It's either about drug addiction, a breakup or both.
I believe this song is about the suicide of their band mate Ian Curtis. New Order was formed from the band Joy Division after Ian’s death and knowing this the lyrics heavily point to this for me. Ive tried looking for the banda comments about song meaning and I havent found any but I think this might be it.
A lot of Bernard's lyrics are essentially alphabites stuck together, if the words rhyme that's the main thing.
But...there's usually an essential meaning behind the song, I get feeling this is about an unpleasant and unsuccessful relationship in which Bernard feels he has been the injured party (funnily enough I can't remember one where he plays the role of the perpetrator or bad actor, he should have written a couple). Sounds like the song is through the lens of a trauma bonded person who has chosen to walk away and settle on the narrative that they were the victim and this other person is the perpetrator.
Wow, I can't believe so few people appear to have head this song...this is THE 80s song for me, I am hooked! So freaking good...
This song ROCKS. Especially on Substance.
It is a much better song than the band themselves would have you believe. Note how the full length version isn't on the deluxe edition. And neither is the "Shellcock" dub mix with the great powerchord ending.
