This song achieves it's goal with major bravado. It looks back at Germanys troubled past and how we can't be proud to be Germans because of this: "Meine Liebe kann ich dir nicht geben" - My love I cannot give to you. The line "So jung und doch so alt" (So young and yet so old) points toward the short existence of actual Germany since the reunification in 1990, but the foundation where it is today has been german for centuries. The line "Im Geist getrennt, im Herz vereint" (Spiritually split, united at heart) is an indicator for the different wishes and goals of the german population, with a slight hint towards the past ideologies that some german citizens still have. "Wer hoch steigt, wird tief fallen" (The higher you are, the deeper the fall) is a straight reminder to WWII and why something similar should never be tried again. Then there is the line "Deutschland, Deutschland über allen" (Germany above all), basically from the first verse of the German anthem, slightly changed. After WWII this verse was dropped for very obvious reason. |

I have heard the Everly Brothers version of the song, but it isn't my favorite music style. The a-ha version has a way nicer buildup, better vocals and gets the message across way better.The instruments and synths used give the song much more power than the Everly Brothers could have achieved (they are of course limited by technology and time, and I understand that).
