PJ Harvey – Naked Cousin Lyrics 4 years ago
Horribly wrong lyrics. Who submits this shit to the Internet? “Scared as a chick- a-chicken-ah” is what she’s saying.

“Fries in the sun, but my naked cousin” ...

“Begging all to” = “beggin of you”

@[ALou:30967] the gay/beard angle makes no sense, and I hear that line as ‘bill’, not ‘beard’. Thank you for the French line, though — that makes sense and I surely couldn’t make a transcription work in English just going by phonetics.

Does he really say “despite of”? Because that’s retarded. You either say “in spite of [this thing]” or “despite [this thing]” but never “despite of”. Cringe...

@[quantitasfacitvenenum:24150] The lyric is “you only spit out” (referring back to the machine, like a vending machine that’s malfunctioning or temporarily out of service). It’s not “won’t lisp it out”

Why isn't there a way to edit the "official" lyrics once a song is posted on this site? Instead, all we can do is offer corrections in the comments. There are many mistakes in this song's submitted lyrics.

@[itchy35255:23613] are you sure he's saying "so much today"? I thought I actually read an interview where he said it was about his wasted youth when he was...sort of a bigot? I don't remember specifics. Don't downvote me if I'm getting it wrong! I'm pretty positive about it. Of course I have no idea where I read the interview. But he's saying "cost me so much to hate".

The Amps – first revival Lyrics 6 years ago
Kissed a ton
A ton all packed and mean
Now you're spikes to spires
Your Mute's burned in my screen

Hear no crickets, no praise
Under the water, under the waves
??? Whistle in time
And our last of the leisurely wine
You're too fast for me

The Amps – mom's drunk Lyrics 6 years ago
Jeez, those are almost all wrong.

Ho-ha, general lead the way

On the ground
Deeply out of focus
Four words of hate:
Me, I'm packin' play--yeah

Her refrain:
Spilled, without a stain
A stock reply
Me, unsatisfied

Ho-ha, general lead the way
Ho-ha, general lead the way

The Amps – Breaking The Split Screen Barrier Lyrics 6 years ago
Yes, the song is about Kelley Deal and how she was strung out over "the holidays" one winter. The second verse is: I know you're not small anymore / that doesn't mean you're fine / one endless ultrasound / dial 'round / Humming 80-VENUS" Got those lyrics from Kim herself.

submissions
The Amps – Pacer Lyrics 6 years ago
the line is actually "height to height", and the song is about Kim watching Kelley's heroin use surpass her own. Kim knew how to "pace" herself so she didn't develop an acute problem, but Kelley just barreled on. The "you spat in my eye" is a bit of a divergence from that theme, it's a reference to an incident when Kim was 12 or so, riding her bike, and a neighborhood bully rode past her and spat a loogie in her face (dramatized in the video for the song as well).

Song is published by Period Music, as all of Kim's songs are. Not Sony/ATV.

Pixies – Gigantic Lyrics 6 years ago
@[StarrCandy:21824] Kim has always been clear that it's about the interracial relationship portrayed in the movie Crimes of The Heart, starring Michelle Pfeiffer. It's set in the 50s and she is definitely referring to the young black guy's big cock. She stated it in interviews in the late 80s (some of them are on YouTube), as did other Pixies members, and it's in the book Fool The World: The Oral History Of A Band Called Pixies.

No. 2 – Critical Mass Lyrics 6 years ago
@[kazimierz:21674] Ha! it's about a gay man, all ten songs in the album are. Also, I don't think these lyrics are correct, not 100%. "You're lit by the passing cars / the third time they passed in the night" Chorus: "You're happy to go down on your knees". It's about making money for sex without setting out to do so. Going out and realizing you're all of a sudden someone whom (older) gay men would pay to have sex with.

Liz Phair – Dance Of The Seven Veils Lyrics 6 years ago
Anyone else bothered by the omission of the word 'only' in the first line of the chorus? She very clearly sings, "I only ask because I'm a real cunt in spring". Wish we could edit the lyrics as they appear here.

@[Writersbl0ck:21142] Thank you for explanation. The song is full of so many allusions, it's hard to keep it straight who's saying what about whom, and how it all ties together. Liz was smoking A LOT of pot back then... Also, worth considering the most recent general comment about this song, that Liz was writing this about John Cusack from the perspective of one of Cusack's ex-girlfriends.

PJ Harvey – Dry Lyrics 9 years ago
This song is about going to see a U2 concert. "the face" in the opening like is actually the magazine The Face. "I caught it in The Face: [U2 is] coming around again. I thought it was worth waiting." I'm not kidding. This came from an interview with Harvey I read ages ago. Never forgot it. Don't have a link, but I swear it's true. Yes, the song alludes to a dry vagina, and it is a withering put-down, but it's inspired by a U2 concert and Harvey's crush on (I believe) Larry Mullen.

The Breeders – We're Gonna Rise Lyrics 10 years ago
Great comment, purpleandgreen -- perhaps an extension of the same theme she explored on "Divine Hammer" (which is about looking for divinity, proof for the existence of god/heaven, and finding nothing).

Think the line "backed our pain" is actually "No rules, fact or faith"

Supposedly the lyrics are taken "verbatim" from a dream some kid had. I forget who the kid was. Somebody's nephew, or younger brother, or Britt Walford...something along those lines.

The Breeders – Off You Lyrics 10 years ago
Song is about her house on Nantucket, and the friends she would look for to spend time with. "Oh, they're off-island [this weekend]." Kim: "You know what? I'm off YOU." This is from an Aussie radio interview Kim gave around the time of this release.

There are also some obvious references to L.A., or East L.A., where she was living at the time of this album's writing and recording: a starlet, a riot, the violence.

Now that this song is featured in the movie Her, we can look forward to hundreds of new people misinterpreting the lyrics.

The Breeders – Mountain Battles Lyrics 10 years ago
Tonight, rural shines the gloom
My vaulting heart throws shadow on the moon

Always thought this song was about Kim leaving rehab (post-Title TK) and wondering what the hell she was going to do with herself because she wasn't going to be drunk and high all day anymore. Pretty poignant.

OR -- it could be about her moving back in with her parents to care for her mother (a different facility than the one I imagined in my first interpretation), and wondering what she was going to be doing to pass the time there.

No, it really is about a living abortion. Kim said so in interviews.
Fun fact: Kim backed off the mic for the line 'despite the knives internal' because she felt that it was stupid. She STILL backs off the mic when they play it live now. She does the same for 'set percent' in "Off You" (a phrase omitted from the Title TK liner notes)

The Breeders – Doe Lyrics 10 years ago
Ooof. These lyrics are way off! The first word is 'Trumpets', not 'top this'. The 'da-DA, da-DA, da-da-DA' that follows is supposed to mimic the sound of trumpets. "He said 'doe'" is a reference to Disney's Bambi. The song is about a lithium overdose. This is all according to Kim, from a Pod-era print interview.

PJ Harvey – Missed Lyrics 10 years ago
Man, some of you people are bonkers. Song is about looking for evidence for the existence of big god and his son and finding none. PJH was raised by un-believing parents, so when she reached adulthood she got curious about Biblical tales, read them from the perspective of a non-religious person and the various myths from the Bible made good fodder for lyrics. "No I've missed him" = "I've looked everywhere but couldn't find him." Another song about agnoticism/atheism also from 1993 is Kim Deal's "Divine Hammer."
