It lives marry me

a living abortion

I had an abortion. It was horrifying. And I agree with you. Great comment!

PS: I actually love this song--I would listen to it over and over and be in heaven, somehow. But I would never have another abortion. Never! Not even if a crackhead raped me.

My friend Kevin always said bad things about Kelly Deal. He referred to her in such a derogatory way; he called her a junkwhore, basically. I thought that was unfair. I love Kim and Kelly both, I think it's unfair of the world to be so hard on Kelly. She made Kim great and Kim made the Pixies great. I love Frank Black and all but he's kind of a whiny little baby about it all, don't you think? The Deals, they know the deal. The Black is in the black and he's not half as Frank as he claims. I liked him better as Francis. The way he is, he's Hellbound. He could learn a lot from that Kelly Deal, that junkwhore. She knows where to find the good shit and Frank is just as hooked as the rest of us.

This is my favourite song off "POD". It's about abortion.

God, you guys are freaks. It's about sex from a woman's POV.

"It lives in folds of red and steamy air" is about as precise a description of the female pudenda as you'll ever find.

"It lives in misery/Hellbound" Hellbound means she's tied (bound) to torment (hell) because she is a sexual being. The pudenda here is identified with both libido and menstruation: thus, her sex life (good and bad), her lack of one (frustration), masturbation, and menstruation.

"Oh, oh we're falling/Falling down/Down" A nice description of orgasm, but also ties, neatly, into the suffering of the "hellbound" line (isn't Hell the place below?): thus she is still pleasured and pained by her sexuality.

"It lives/despite the knives internal/It lives/marry me" You could interpret "knives internal" as an abortion, but I think it refers both to the male organ and, again, to the pain of menstruation. In spite of privation and pain, "it lives": that is, her desire. Which is why the final lyric (aside from repeated lines) is "marry me."

Song Meaning

No, it really is about a living abortion. Kim said so in interviews. Fun fact: Kim backed off the mic for the line 'despite the knives internal' because she felt that it was stupid. She STILL backs off the mic when they play it live now. She does the same for 'set percent' in "Off You" (a phrase omitted from the Title TK liner notes)

@somercet

And, on a significant day in American history, Kim did make one Roe V. Wade comment: “This next song is an old, old song. It’s about an abortion,” she said, before launching into “Hellbound.”
