Oasis – Idler's Dream Lyrics 7 years ago
Well I think it's about Noel meeting the girl of his dreams and it's an amazing song.

To me the first verse is describing the first time the girl is seen; likening her to an angel.

The second verse is about when they first met, he wants to treat he like the angel he thinks she is. She looks after him.

Third verse is - first he's talking about not expecting this love, or looking for it or praying for it. Then it moves on to the insecurity of losing this girl.

The last verse isn't a nightmare in my opinion - the sky turning red is a sunset, he just realises she's a dream and she's singing Shangri-la which is metaphor for paradise.

Ash – Goldfinger Lyrics 7 years ago
I thought it was "I'm writing it down, listening to the rain?"

Anyway it could be about the anticipation of waiting for a girl to come home so you can give her a cheeky (gold) finger and the rest.

But it seems like he's anxious so I think the girl has gone out to get score some drugs, probably heroin given the gold reference. Anyway it's a cracking song.

David Bowie – Strangers When We Meet Lyrics 8 years ago
Is it not just about breaking up with someone and a nod to Angie?

I can see elements working with the theme of someone with dementia but it doesn't really all work. The "thin and frail" comment relates to "all our friends now seem so.. thin and frail" so I cannot see why people are relating this to the person he's singing to? Besides the attitude/delivery of the song is not to someone he loves who's battling a disease... it's a bitter account in my opinion. Anyway interesting theory but not for me.

I think it's the course of a breakup and how time affects the relationship and attitudes towards the person. Starting with the realisation that you're not in the right place or lifestyle anymore; all our friends now seem so thin and frail. Or with the right person; No trendy rush of faith, I'm with you so I can't go on.

The next stage is the post break-up getting over them. I think the "forget my name, but I'm over you" line might be a dig at Angie for keeping his name after their divorce.

The final part is being overjoyed at not knowing each other anymore and knowing you made the right decision.

Great song that ends a great album. Outside version is better than the original on buddha in my opinion as well, but I don't think it's a popular opinion who know both!

David Bowie – 'Tis A Pity She Was A Whore Lyrics 8 years ago
Supposedly acknowledges the shocking rawness of WWI according to the post on Bowie's official facebook for the initial demo release in 2014.

Seems to be a chance meeting with a woman who impressed a soldier in a rare moment of 'pleasure' but even then he's punched and has his purse stolen as the woman is a prostitute.

But the soldier is resigned to his fate, after all there's a war on.

Storming version on ★ much better than the demo. One of my faves from the final album of this genius.

Oasis – Up in the Sky Lyrics 8 years ago
It's about the divide in class and people in the sky being people like the queen and politicians who try to represent the working class, but have no idea what the working class live through and see.

They are just from different worlds and cannot relate to one another.

I don't think it's about drugs but anything with "high" or reference to being up somewhere will always get people rattling on about cocaine or whatever.

The Stone Roses – Standing Here Lyrics 8 years ago
Love the idea that it's about a guy who dies visiting his girlfriend, as soon as I heard this theory it completely makes sense.

I have always struggled, like everyone else it seems, to decipher the "Over me my free-fall baby" line. It never sounds right when you're listening to the track and reading it. You get the same couple of guesses being regurgitated year after year even though it's nearly 25 years old. The other guess I see a lot is "over me my fruitful life, babe". Again doesn't really make sense and doesn't really sound like what he's singing.

However after finally hearing it live a few years ago at heaton park I think I finally heard what he's singing:

"Over me bright blue fork lightning"

I've listened to live versions and I think this is the correct.

Anyway the song is mint, and the last verses are perfection with the guitar:
I can feel a hurricane when you shout: "I should be safe forever in your arms"

Love it!

No need to explain it's pretty obvious really.

But this bit:

I'll miss you every day of your life
And maybe when you're dead, I'll get some rest,
From holding onto you.

Reminds me of my Grandad's reaction to my Nan having alzeimer's. VERY sad. :(

Always loved this song though.

The Stone Roses – She Bangs The Drums Lyrics 8 years ago
First verse is that feeling when you're young where you feel great and you're getting better everyday and nothing can stop you. Like "it's my time now". Saying to the generation before "the past is yours but the future's mine" get out of my way. Feels like someone going about to go out on a night out.

Second verse sounds like coming home after an all-nighter knackered with a girl who then fucks your brains out. Never again will you be so in tune with someone. Even that person, it was a one off moment.

That's my feeling anyway.

Sounds like it's a song about becoming the smiths to me.

Maybe it's only about him and Marr, but I see it as a song about moving from a normal person to becoming a band and saying this hasn't happened before, we're different, stay close to us because we're going places.

The last lines are about concerns of it not working out, maybe Marr disappearing and the dream crashes. Luckily it didn't happen for a few years.

The Smiths – Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others Lyrics 9 years ago
It's clearly about the obsession the world has with women and their size - whether it's weight, breasts, bottom.

It's been this way for certain people forever, and he wants something more.

The borrowed Dean Martin lyric "send me the pillow the one that you dream on" with the addition of "and I'll send you mine" is the yearning for something more than just physical appearance. Tell me your dreams. He isn't bothered about only the physical appearance he is interested in the persons soul.

The Smiths – Pretty Girls Make Graves Lyrics 9 years ago
I don't think it's about a gay guy at all. It's very annoying that people jump to this conclusion all the time. I think it's about attitudes to sex. Morrissey as we've learnt is not a flippant person when it comes to trust and making decisions about feelings, love, sex etc...

He won't just sleep around and needs to trust someone first, but the girl he likes won't wait and he subsequently "loses his faith in women".

Of course it could be applied and related to by (closet) homosexuals who have girl's as friends who want more, but I don't think it was written from that perspective.

It's quite annoying that so many smiths fans jump to these stereotypes. If a guy says "no" the world thinks he's gay, if a woman says no then people applaud her for not being "a slag". No one ever thinks she's a lesbian, and no one ever thinks that the guy would rather not, or want it to mean more than just "a shag".

@[poppi:3991] Nice work, it's so easy to assume everything he writes is from the gay perspective. It certainly can speak to that situation, and people could relate to it, but I think it's fairly obvious he likes both and it's not really enough of a subject matter for Moz to write about a gay guy saying no to a girl. I think you got it bang on.

Joy Division – Atmosphere Lyrics 9 years ago
Always loved this song it's so heartbreakingly beautiful and I think it's the best thing they every did. I can only imagine what they'd be achieving 5 years later if Ian was still alive.

Before my interpretation I always thought the line was "aching to see" and the more I listen the more I'm convinced I am right! Live versions (where that line exists) also sounds like "aching". But anyway, it's only one word, but I think it's crucial.

Personally I think this song is about not feeling normal, not fitting in feeling like a weirdo, and there's an anger coming from this frustration of people not getting you or knowing how to deal with or help you.

The first verse I think is about people just seeing this anger on the surface and not looking beyond it. Endless talking from people who don't understand doesn't help at all. Ultimately you're asking them to leave because of this, but you also want them to stay and help at the same time.

Second part is about people not getting him and his illusion worn like a mask of self-hate is there to push people away and once he's done that the mask disappears and he's on his own again, but he doesn't want people to leave it's just self defence that pushes them away. Don't walk away stay and help.

The third part is feeling everyone else glides through life, wanting to see the "freaks". Seeking them out, but after they've had their fill of looking at the freaks, they abandon them without helping them at all. The abandoned too soon line is relating it to leaving a helpless baby on a street corner. I think it's the most powerful line of the song. It's like he feels helpless, lost and abandoned. The last "Don't walk away" line is like a plea, begging for someone to stay. Early in the song the same line sounds like like a command, but by the end there's no fight left; it's desperate.

The keyboards and the electronic burst reminds me of the final 3rd of Warszawa by Bowie on Low. Some songs sound like a wave of joy, almost euphoric, orgasmic, but these 2 songs are opposite musically like a wave of pain and desperation. Still beautiful, like the acceptance of the pain has some form of comfort. Like the release of crying almost.

Morrissey – Our Frank Lyrics 9 years ago
Well he speaks about this song in the interview on youtube called: Morrissey : WDRE Radio Interview (1991) (search for it).

Although to be honest the lyrics say it all.....

Our frank and open
Deep conversations
They get me nowhere
They bring me down, so
Give it a rest, won't you?
Give me a cigarette
God give me patience
Just no more conversation

There's not too much to interpret he doesn't want to have deep and meaningful conversations, when they bring him down and there's no way to solve the ending of the world. He also wants to lighten up a bit and stop thinking so deeply all the time and be more careless; give me a cigarette and a drink. He's hoping they'll relax him so he can enjoy life and not mull over deeply depressing topics.

There's no frank the title is a pun. The 2 colours are the pulloever and the sick mixing together.

Morrissey – King Leer Lyrics 9 years ago
Hmmm I disagree with all interpretations really. I think it's about girls always going for the "jerk" and ignoring genuinely nice guys. Wanting the bad boy who is cruel and seemingly does nothing for her.

The boyfriend is clearly king leer (gift of the grab, real hint of cruelty etc....)

I don't think the girl is an ice queen at all, but someone who entertains the singer because he's nice to her, but he doesn't float her boat sexually (nothing much happened) and as a result she is dismissive of the narrator because she only has eyes for the bad boy (doesn't thank or call him).

I see this as a real companion to Driving your girlfriend home, but King Leer is much earlier in the relationship when she's still disillusioned before she realises the boyfriend is a dick and she isn't enjoying her life any more in DYGH.

Another friend-zone song.

The Stone Roses – Elephant Stone Lyrics 9 years ago
Personally don't really see anything about drugs in the song.

It seems to be about a girl who takes him to heaven (with sex) but doesn't want anything more. In the beginning he still dreams that good things can happen and she can love him and says she can move in with him.

Ultimately this doesn't happen, but he can't help coming back for more, but it's not the same (choking on the clouds as he falls from heaven rather than kissing them as he's taken there).

"These four walls saw the rise and fall" = sex
"and your midnight getaway" = leaving after the sex, not staying with the guy.

This leaves him empty and nothing means anything anymore.

Such a great song. There way of tackling such subjects is unique and uplifting. Surprising it didn't make the album, I know it's recorded at a different time, but I would never leave a song this good from an album!

Morrissey – Driving Your Girlfriend Home Lyrics 9 years ago
Essentially it can be summed up in 2 words :Unrequited love.

Of course being Moz it's more complicated situation than more unrequited love songs and 100% more realistic than most of these songs.

Moz seems infatuated with his friends' girlfriend who is clearly unhappy in her relationship. I don't think that the girlfriend is explaining her relationship to get morrissey to act on his feelings, whether she likes morrissey at all is not mentioned or even eluded to vaguely until the very end (if at all). I think Moz is Friend-zoned, but cannot move on because he feels so much for her. He also won't act because his friend is involved and her mind is not in a place to think about Moz in a romantic way.

I think the lines about her saying "turn left" "so I turn left", while setting the scene are also related to Moz doing anything she says in an almost pathetic way because he has nothing else.

I think the very end of the song "goodbye so politely" can be interpreted in different ways. I can see how there could be a hint that the girlfriend might want more from Moz (a lingering handshake perhaps), but I think it's more likely suggesting there's nothing else but polite handshakes and no chance of anything more (sounds more Morrissey to me!). Any hint of reciprocation could be in Morrissey's head. The sadness and longing of the situation from Morrissey's point of view is clarified at last.

It's a great song as I'm sure most of us have been in a similar situation at some point.

@[parkster:3324] I take it to be (literally) the colour of the pullover and the sick blending together. I also take it to mean different types of people - the people talking deeply all the time, and those who are not so intense about everything. I think Morrissey is saying sometimes it's refreshing not to be deep and meaningful all the time and you can be relaxed and flippant from time to time and it's fine.

Morrissey – Bengali In Platforms Lyrics 9 years ago
There's a lot of good stuff here most of it from Cheesebagel, but there are a few things I don't think people have mentioned (enough).

If you're a morrissey fan you should understand that morrissey sings about difficult subjects but usually from the viewpoint of whoever that subject is. Not as someone looking at a situation, he puts himself in the situation of the sufferer, if you like.

Like November Spawned a Monster - he's looking at the situation from the disabled person. Of course there's always more going on than the direct narrative of the song and it can be used to mean many things, a lot that Morrissey can relate to (which is why he writes it in the first place).

So when Morrissey sings lines like "Life is hard enough when you belong here", the less bright immediately think it's coming from English people saying to the Bengali "you don't belong here! go home!". Of course it's not that at all. He's singing from the perspective of the Bengali. The Bengali feels like he doesn't belong.

The other thing is that this song is about Manchester in 70's and 80's when unemployment was very high and life was tough and there wasn't many jobs and the average family had no money. The Bengali is coming to Manchester (presumably) to get a better life and make money etc...

Morrissey is bursting that bubble and saying life is already very tough, so shelve your plans they're not going to happen. People are struggling here it's not some kind of magical land. The fact that the Bengali is going to have to cope with adapting to a new culture is not going to make things any easier. He is wearing platforms and wanting to be friends (forever) is very touching and quite sad because it's not going to be so easy. The fact that people are having it tough make it harder for them to accept others.

While not saying his is 100% correct some people believe it's about 2 men because of the following exchange:

A note upon HIS desk
"P.S. Bring Me Home And Have Me!"
......
So came HIS reply :
"But on the desk is where I want you!"

It appears that one "man" is saying take me home and have me, and the other man is saying "no I want you on the desk". The gender is specified for both, so if you interpret that in this way then it leads people to assume it's about a gay affair.

There's also a hint of them wanting to be caught (sex on the desk, in a tent with the door open) and the onlooker is surprised that they're keeping it secret when it's obvious.

Well it sums up certain people as well as being a direct reference to WW2 Berlin situation.

People are becoming less concerned with real issues and only care about superficial things. He continues to mention that TV is turning people into idiots (X factor etc...) as they treat people like they're stupid so people are becoming stupid.

So some people don't even notice when important events happen (wars etc..), they just flock to the beach, copy of The Sun under their arm, and dribble to X factor in the evening.

I like what you say a lot, apart from perhaps the bit about the culture being overtaken/lost as such. I see the last verses as Britain coming under attack of influence from the US and the 'scales' being the scales of justice. Because England 'stole' that land and created a monster and now we're getting deservedly whipped by that wind. However instead of hurting it just fills up her brigantine (pirates) sails and helps her on her way.

It's by no means a totally pro-Britain song, but I feel a deep love of the country coming through the lyrics.
