@[Camj:29433] I remember seeing them at Metal for Brain (must have been around 2003 I think). They were great there. Then saw them years later at The Prince (with Karnivool in support), the crowd left after Karnivool (a local WA band), then when they returned about 6 months later (and had had Triple J exposure) the place was packed for COG.
Great band, and love their sound. |

@[DisneyPrincess:28589]-x totally disagree, the themes explored fit typical domestic violence / violent relationship stereotypes more so. People ignoring obvious signs as not wanting to get involved (window shoppers), victims blaming themselves for sexual assault because of how they dressed (a man can't help themselves, the woman shouldn't dress that way if she doesn't want a raping), and feeling like they have no control. |

@[mb20rox111:28588] I don't see it this way at all. The woman is a victim of physical and sexual abuse ("So why don't you free me", "Control is all you really need", "What he's done to me", "I guess I had it comin'")
The term window shopper is in reference to the passer bys (society). We often turn a blind eye to domestic violence, because we don't want to interfere with personal affairs ("Passing glances fall on me, Like screams on deaf ears")
The lines:
"I just dressed too tempting
'Cause your heads fuckin empty"
Borrow straight from the culture of that a woman was "asking" to be raped because of how she dressed. That is it isn't the man's fault, as the woman should not have dressed to tempt them. The second line is a bit of commentary by Nickelback regarding what they think of that argument (that is, it is total bullshit). |

@[hellno:28575] the first of your corrections is wrong, it is definitely "life". Love does not fit the context of the lyrics in the song. Up until this point the whole song has talked about living their life how they want, and not worrying about other's opinions. So in that context "love" makes absolutely no sense at this point in the lyrics.
I think the second correction could possibly be right, but every other source I have found has it as "chance". |

The song's title and lyrics are definitely regarding masturbation (or "self care" as co-writer Julia Michaels commented on Genius).
To me though the meaning of song is deeper than simple masturbation. I believe it is also a bit of a rebuke to an ex, in the sense that they hurt the narrator but that doesn't matter because the narrator knows that they can be happier (in life and sexually) without them. In essence they can more a meaningful connection with masturbation than a sexual relationship with them. |

e.g. Your like a shot of pure gold - you wouldn't have this line at the start (sort of implies the man has come, which would be at the end of a song)
Pull me like a bass drum - I could understand if from a man's perspective, but drugs are more likely to have a pulling effect on you (if you're a female)
Sparkin' up a rhythm - drug reference all day
Take me down like I'm a domino - again would understand sexual reference if from a male's perspective (otherwise more suited to a depressant drug or the after effects of a upper) |

@[Tchap:26496] considering the song was written before the USA joined the Vietnam War (and Hendrix recored his version only 18 months after they had joined) I would suggest that it is not. There's no mention in the song of "returning", "tour of duty" or anything else that suggest they are a vet (the anti-war movement was only starting at the time of Jimi's release too). |

A song about looking at the glass as half full rather than half empty IMO. Yes there is "shit" in the world, but there are plenty of beautiful / wonderful things in the world ... something to "remember".
I like the lines "Half of its shit / It's perfect" ... sung so beautifully, so still not concerned that there is "shit" in the world, because that is reality (which is "perfect"). |

Given the last line and the album title "Family" this song appears to be about the dreams and aspirations a father has for their child (grown adult now). The narrator is realising all that their father wanted for them (and perhaps hasn't been able to give them ... or they haven't lived up to that expectation).
The "one day" lines may be suggesting that they are slowing getting towards their father's dream for them ... or otherwise talking to their dad and saying look at the small everyday achievements rather than the idealistic big dream you had for them. |

I'd say the only line that is a bit concerning would be "Becomes a lovers lane".
The marriage line I can understand, it is from the point of a child. They want to be with their father all the time (like a wife) ... pretty sure in the movie the father is a widow too (so in context could be that the child wants to fill the void left by their mothers death on their dad ... a very normal reaction by a child, who doesn't really understand romance to love).
The rest is a sweet song pretty much a cry for attention by a young child, that is, don't spend so much time working, instead be here with me because they are the moments she enjoys most. Also embodies the play of words for the movie, Poor Rich Girl ... that is she is rich money wise but poor because of her father's priorities (that is wealth is more than your bank account). |

A few possibilities I feel for this song ... it could be about drugs, depression or a loved one IMO.
"The poisonous world" is the main thing that leads me to consider it could possibly be drugs. As the rest of the lyrics to me tend to float around them being a dark place previously (depression, taking drugs etc.) They are fighting to get out of this place but in essence the sense of reality is distorted (due to mental depression / illness / drug abuse) and now they are devote to their new reality (depression / drug).
The flip side is that it is about a loved one ... love can cause some distorted views of the world, and you are devoted to their love (and it can be poisonous afterwards if the separation isn't pretty). |

It could very easily be based on the interpretation suggested by @[Service to busy] in regards to being about God / religion.
"deafness of your silence" ... how many people pray but never get an answer (spoken anyway), this could be very disheartening for someone looking for answers / needing someone to listen

Here with me now" ... God is always there apparently (everywhere and anywhere)

In the darkness you astound me"
Struggles to see the benefit of believing, and the "darkness" could be either their loneliness or a metaphor for their non-belief (dark vs light). |

If it was a romantic relationship I would generally assume it would be "she" not "he". |

@[stinger85:26398] at the trial it was stated that the initially they intended to simply rob him but something happened (contentious here) that led them to murder him ... hence he was found guilty of felony murder.
Although given how they attempted to murder him suggests it was far more than a simple robbery (or even drug deal) gone wrong. You wouldn't inflict such a beating if a robbery gone wrong, and doesn't sound like it was intended to "send a message" to other drug users (which would be the only reason for such a public display of the body).
The actual murder may not have been premeditated (considering how quickly they were arrested and poorly planned it was), but the actual murder definitely seems to suggest "hate" was the reason |

Shepard to me would normally evoke thoughts of religion more so though, that is the Lord is our Shepard etc. Also tied to the fence like a scarecrow ... think crucifixion. However, given the context of the song if it was of a religious matter, it would be the religion that was to "blame" ... as you'd argue their religion bred the hatred. |

Feelings of despair and depression come to me from this song. The scenery is set in a cold stormy area (in which humans tend to feel isolated) ... this is simply a metaphor for how they feel.
The chorus speaks of the despair they feel being trapped in their world of depression. They try to find a way out ("to belong") but they just can't escape their life / depression. It is a "painful detour" in life that they've taken (from the "path" ... which is a general metaphor for "life") ... and they don't know how to address it (depression ... how to get back on the path of living). |
