I love The Cure, and John Lennon, and particularly the original. I also appreciate the sound they were attempting in making the song their own, but quite frankly, I think they failed dismally in the "good song" department. They took the main aspect of a beautiful song; its beauty, and made it dirty and evocative, and really quite badly. This would hardly stand up as a Cure original.

I understand that Odelay is a sampling based album, that this is more than likely a humorous jab at rap/hip hop and what have you, so forth, blah.
Despite being aware of all this, and being an enormous Beck fan, I can't find any appeal in this song whatsoever. It is an irritation in my ears shoved between Readymade and Ramshackle, two songs encroaching upon masterpiece status. |

I guess it's more specifically about a pilot (or steward) who is hiding behind images of grandeur and godliness in his ability to fly you anywhere, but that he is really just a greedy corporate man?
In a more broader view, I suppose it's just about corporations in general, and their desire to acquire your money by any means, especially lying.
Or I could be totally wrong.

Could this be a reference to Bert Jansch? He was a folk/blues artist who started at basically the same time as Donovan. He was also a prominent member of the band Pentangle. I always envisioned the title as some sort of nod to his music but I've had no grounds for believing so other than the name Bert. |
