Let's face it - I've been listening to this song for nigh on 40 years and have never known the lyrics - that actually make it more beguiling but I am going to email Liz Fraser and beg her to tell me what they are. Because it's an astonishing piece of art xx |

"Was on me and Leroy's wedding day
What was the name of that love song they played?
I forgot how it goes
I don't recall how it goes"
That's interesting to me, wonder what that means - is she so involved in her life that she forgets her wedding song, presumably the first dance song? It's a song that seems really quite sad to me x |

I love this song and I absolutely respect and admire the artists intention and their art. Gotta say though, it's so filled with local and specific references that me, a Scottish guy simply doesn't understand without looking it all up. But, fair enough, I love The Wrens music x |

I'll be honest, I love this song and have listened to it for years but reading the lyrics I had no idea that it was about two lassies from a small town. I am a bit thick when deciphering metaphors and stuff so it's on me, but I just didn't get it. |

After listening for 20 odd year it's about revolution. We need huge change, the old guard offend and have nothing to offer. It's obviously quite literal but surely that's the message. We need to change this bullshit world order we are under. Great song. |

Looks like I posted 16 years ago but I repeat, the last verse is poetic heartbreak, and I have lost many in the intervening years which makes it even more poignant and emotional. All the best to everyone - the lyrics that kill me:
"Its not in the dead shocks that dropped underneath us,
When we used the car.
Its not in the strings we didn't pull, to move you around the floor.
Where are you now?
Pacing a faceless maw, somewhere vague.
You're not outside, you're not inside, you're not anymore.
Where did you go?
Here's to the pranks we never pulled,
Never will." |

It's great listening to all the various interpretations of this masterpiece, for that is surely what it is, but it is most certainly about the use og heroin and the effect that does have to enable a "perfect day" or whatever the time may be, perfect hour, two.......it's a classic song x |

@[ice:44600]-9 I agree, it seems like a child's birthday celebration, "nobody knows how they're loved" - the child doesn't know, because he/she is a child but this is also a nod to all of us adults - we never know how we're loved. And then the line, "the flowers that grew, the things that happened" - adult things in their lives that didn't impinge on the childhood of the kid, or something like that.
And the last line, it's a hopeful - wistful maybe - but a hopeful, positive, bright future is ahead. |

American high school students should all be taught this bit of the song:
"come the small black book
come the brandy cask
one strange disease
the well worded paper
signed by the drunken
hands of thieves
and suddenly
they were told to leave"
That's it, in a nutshell. All learning should stem from that x |
