The Ting Tings – Be the One Lyrics 14 years ago
This song seems to reflect the rest of the album- very much about their foray into the music business. I think it's all about the relationship with the record label. They're "making all the noise" and get excited and into it, yet the label says, "Eh, we aren't so sure about it". I think the entire album reflects the actual experience of making the album and the tension between the label and band.

Regina Spektor – Fidelity Lyrics 15 years ago
To me, this isn't necessarily about heartbreak. I think it's more of the feeling of finally opening up and letting love in. It's intense. Perhaps there is an element of heartbreak, but to me it's always about how overpowering and strong love. Maybe lovesick, even.

Kelly Clarkson – My Life Would Suck Without You Lyrics 15 years ago
I love this song, and I don't care if the lyrics aren't deep or the music is overtly catchy and poppy. It's a damn fine song in which Kelly sings very well. She goes for it, even if it's corny, and I respect and like that! =)

Liz Phair – White Chocolate Space Egg Lyrics 15 years ago
I really think this song is about her becoming a mother. She doesn't need money or wine, because she now has her son, and that love is all encompassing. She will literally see him all around her. It's a beautiful situation. =)

Liz Phair – Johnny Feelgood Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is about a guy who is just amazing! I mean, he blows her away. He's the most beautiful person inside that she's ever seen, but also he has a down and dirty side. She just can't resist him.

Liz Phair – Count On My Love Lyrics 15 years ago
It is a bit corny at some points, but I think the line, "Someday, if we never said it/ We might live to regret it." makes up for it. That's just a brilliant line and so powerful.

Peaches – Fuck the Pain Away Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is about the constant struggle to maintain one's identity in an era of mass media and celebrity images plastered on every billboard we pass. Notice the cultural reference to Blondie; the speaker cannot even be called without being compared to a powerful feminine figure in the...

JUST KIDDING!!!

It's about going out and getting some! And lovin' it. =)

Pansy Division – Tinted Windows Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is so great! "Your roommates don't know".
Hee hee! At the end, where the high voiced harmony goes "Wipe off the steam/ I'm gonna cream." I think it's great! It's a homemade sounding song. The lyrics are sang with a youthful love, too. Very tender, sweet, and erotic! ;-)

Hee hee, phone/cyber sex is fun, thrilling and taboo. But, in the end, he just laughs himself to sleep! Hahaha! How true is that? You can't take that stuff seriously!

Liz Phair – Gunshy Lyrics 15 years ago
I always imagined it was "see monkeys do monkeys", like stupid people do other stupid people, but I like this way too! It's definitely about not pursuing those dreams. It's about the public's willingness to accept conditions rather than changing them. The inability to pull the trigger and cause some change!

Jennifer Paige – Crush Lyrics 15 years ago
i always find it to be too much of a denial. She keeps saying it's just a crush, but it sounds like she's just trying to hide how serious it is.

At least, that's what my romantic mind thinks.

Liz Phair – Perfect World Lyrics 15 years ago
The girls just doesn't feel like she deserves the guy. She wants to be everything that he loves in women, which seems to be beyond mortal. His world seems perfect, and all she wants to do is be a part of it. She compares herself to Lucifer, the epitome of all that is NOT good, to prove that it's possible for someone as imperfect as her to be able to fit in his life.

Liz Phair – Shane Lyrics 15 years ago
The narrator and her lover or potential lover are talking about the war. Probably the Gulf War, seeing as this is a girlysound production. Anyway, they seem to be alone in the night. Very important, seeing as this makes their understanding of the gravity of the war so much more important.
Anyway, they talk, and she gives him advice to be careful. She's worried about Shane. He says, "I know the people who can get keep me out of htis." She doesn't care. She just wants him to do what he wants.

The line "don't let em make you do, what you can;t live with tonight in bed, with me, sleeping." Is really significant. She loves him, but doesn't want to force him into a relationship or sexy time. hee hee

Anyway, very powerful. A love song. Anti-war song. Song about lonliness and the ignorance of the general populations. It's amazing.

Liz Phair – Johnny Sunshine Lyrics 15 years ago
A long-term couple ends up separating. Her perfect man, her ray of light, Johnny Sunshine, leaves her and takes everything. It's serious, but not serious. It uses some humor (he kills the cat?!?) but also some real things (he takes the car).

In the end, we are left questioning whether the couple loved each other, or they just grew dependent of each other. She doesn't care about him not being around, does she? Nope. Just all of her stuff. She says she's alone, but only after all of her stuff is taken! Hahaha!

It's like, "Why leave? Our stuff is already set up here!?!?"

Liz Phair – Soap Star Joe Lyrics 15 years ago
Liz pokes fun at the guys who think they are "all that", but also satirizes women for going after him She says, "Make him an offer just to see what he'll say." This is a little strange, seeing as Liz criticizes him to no end. Still, there IS something irresistible about the man who rode in on a pick-up and symbolizes America.

Liz Phair – Why I Lie Lyrics 15 years ago
"If you ask me why i hurt you
I don't understand it
I can't help myself.
It's a special combination.
Of predatory instinct,
And simple ill will."

How much more honest can she get? She's in a relationship and she's not being the best partner there is. Still, she doesn't care. She is just being herself, and dwelling on her imperfections won't do her any good. So, she says, I hurt you. I can't avoid or deny it. I don't care. You can stay or go.

Very empowering.

The Format – She Doesn't Get It Lyrics 15 years ago
It's about a kind of one-night stand with an acquaintance, I think. they've known each other, and since she's leaving, she decides to go home with him for some fun. He, on the other hand, has loved her, and takes it more seriously than her. There's some disillusionment on his part.

Sarah McLachlan – Adia Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is about how we all make mistakes, and we shouldn't let the feelings of guilt or failure consume our lives. We love ourselves ("Adia I'm empty since you've left me"). The key is to remember that we are the same people we've always been, no matter what happens~ WE ARE BORN INNOCENT. We still are. It's just plain beautiful.

Liz Phair – May Queen Lyrics 16 years ago
The other interpretations are probably better than mine, but this song is pretty funny to me. I always viewed it as about a guy that would never go for her for some reason. yet, whenever she sees him, he is surrounded by beautiful girls. It seems like he goes through an endless circle of lovers. Then Liz says he's a "May Queen"! I always viewed this as the guy being gay. I know that's not really it, but it makes the song more interesting. Haha!

Liz Phair – Take A Look Lyrics 16 years ago
I like sav127's ideas. There seems to be a problem with her new guy, because she can't really open herslef up completely. The comparison to a car crash is seen throughout the whole song, perhaps as a morbid curiosity that Liz feels is not quite healthy. In the end, she never sees him again, and she is a little bit different, possibly not even able to remember why it didn't work in the first place ("The facts and the fiction
Collide as the bodies untangle").

Liz Phair – Somebody's Miracle Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is about Liz's inability to stay in a relationship. She sees other happily married couples, and wishes for that fairy tale love. She realizes that she actually could have had that if she had worked for it. Instead, she ended the relationship. This little excerpt pretty much sums that up:
"Once upon a time I was so restless in love
When things we're fine, I changed my mind just because
Now I see how wrong and reckless i've been
Each frog has a prince just waiting inside of him"

You should have stuck it out, Liz.

Don Henley – The Boys of Summer Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is about love, but the youthful, passionate kind of love. In our lives, we've all known the girl who would "wlak reall slow and smile at everyone". All the guys wanted her, and she wanted each one of the guys at some point. But, she changes her mind so often that it seems like summer brings different groups of boys. And while she may be 100% past the relationship, the boys aren't, and they don't even care that she's had many other "boys of summer".
I've been in this situation with a flirty girl such as this. I wanted her so badly, but I was kind of just her toy. And, yes, sometimes I would go the long way home to drive past her house. Now, though, I no longer need her love, but the love I had for her is still buried inside of me, and honestly, it will never go away. Like the song says, I really go back to this time, but I still remember her and love her just the same.
Also, this song sounds like summer love. It's sexy, hot, and steamy. Plus, the video is just perfect. I love this version over any of the other covers, even though those covers are very good.

No Doubt – New Friend Lyrics 16 years ago
Yeah, the serial monogamy part is important in my mind. She says to serial monogamy, "I've got a new friend". I think this song is honestly about being a little bit of a skank and hooking up with strangers, making them new "friends". Maybve it's that feeling when you meet someone who you just fall for. You'd do anything. In the end, she finds that she wants more than just a hook up, so her attitude is all just in her head.

This song is sad. I wonder how often these things happen? After a one night experience, a guy marries a girl to his gay friend's despair.

Liz Phair – Polyester Bride Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is just plain amazing. To me, this song is about the pressure the speaker is feeling about finding a man. She's constantly sad about her life, and Henry just say, "You're lucky for this and this...". Finally, he says, "You've got time." She keeps pushing to find someone and he keeps insisting that she just relax. You don't want to be another polyester bride.

Also, I think the music video is a little summation of Liz Phair's life up to this point. We see scenes from Reefer Madness, alluding to her youthful fascination with drugs. There are also a lot of images of children or babies or pregnancy. Not surprising, seeing as she just had a baby around this time.

Liz Phair – Hello Sailor Lyrics 16 years ago
This is one of the best anti-war songs ever. Mixing in the nursey rhyme, "I'm a Little Teapot" is genius. She compares the situation to three main things: a dictator, a prostitute, and a liberal. Her theme, "Free love is whole lot of bullshit" sounds pro-war, but the free love would actually be directed towards the Sailor. This theme resonates in the three analogies very well. Dictators never openly give love or kindness, prostitutes always charge for their "love", and liberals are constantly condemning behavior. It's not anti-liberal either. It just shows how complicated the situation really is.

Liz Phair – Rocket Boy Lyrics 16 years ago
To me, this song is about a relationship that goes through some life changes. The boy and the girl are together, possibly at a young age, and his life changes and he's no longer around. Their relationship is strained, but she still loves him like a toy and her little rocket boy- she's just waiting for him to stop flying around. He's not that into her, and she's sad about it. Notice the last line, "you had me." He's chosen to go and never stop. I love this song.
