Rage Against the Machine – In My Eyes (Minor Threat cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
Zach is no longer straight edge but he followed the lifestyle for years. He lists Ian and Alec MacKaye in his "Thanks" in the booklet for RATM's self titled debut album. Zach used to be in the sXe band Inside Out before being in RATM. With this cover he's simply acknowledging his roots in the hardcore scene.

Minor Threat – 12XU Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm pretty sure none of the members of Minor Threat have ever been homophobic people - nothing in their history would suggest that. Besides, the "you" addressed in this song is very probably female.

Minor Threat – Seeing Red Lyrics 17 years ago
I always assumed this song was about how people mocked Ian and his friends for their physical appearance without getting to know them..first in the Teen Idles for "dressing punk" and later when Ian started shaving his head completely bald for Minor Threat. It was seen as an anti social or evil thing by most, but ironically his personality was nothing like the average "skinhead". This song seems to be about ignorance and how it pissed him off.

Nation Of Ulysses – Diptheria Lyrics 17 years ago
Dischord bands have a history of being anti-obsession. This is just another expression of the ideals expressed by bands like Minor Threat earlier - that reliance on something that feels and tastes good but which kills slowly is not necessary.

Minor Threat – Good Guys (Don't Wear White) Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't take it that literally...after all, I've seen concert footage of Ian singing this song while wearing a white t shirt..haha

Misfits – Mars Attacks Lyrics 17 years ago
This is just a song about martians attacking Earth and being defeated, probably inspired by the 1996 movie or the earlier comics. The Misfits are well known as B and horror movie fans.

Misfits – Children In Heat Lyrics 17 years ago
I just really love the rythym and sound of this song. The lyrics are over the top as per the course with the Misfits, but an enjoyable song.

This song basically means that you can't base a person's merit on his looks or on first impressions.

Minor Threat – Straight Edge Lyrics 17 years ago
I won't get involved in debating the merits of straight edge here. I've been edge for thirteen years and probably always will be..but this is just a song about how Ian MacKaye didn't need those things to be a punk rocker or to have fun. He didn't need them in his life. That's all it is a song about, not a set of rules.

Gorilla Biscuits – Start Today Lyrics 17 years ago
Very simply put, this is the "just do it" anthem of Gorilla Biscuits.

Bane – My Therapy Lyrics 17 years ago
This seems to be a song about the hardcore scene, plain and simple. Those crowded rooms with kids shouting are the only crowded rooms he doesn't feel all alone in.

Have Heart – Bostons Lyrics 17 years ago
This is a powerful song, and it basically deals with how the singer's father didn't have a father of his own, and had to constantly drag the old man out of bars.

The father worked hard to build his character so that the singer could have a father himself, and the childhood his father before him was robbed of. He had to grow up too fast.

It could also be a song about straight edge because the youngest kid, the narrator, wants to set himself apart from his grandfather and be a better person, like his dad.

Fugazi – Waiting Room Lyrics 18 years ago
To me, this song has always been about being a kid who was outside the norm, sitting in the waiting room of his own life and personal decisions.

He sits and watches others for a while.. the news he's not interested in being a part of, and then decides function is the key, and he's gonna be his own person and perform the actions that mean something to him.

Bane – Wasted On The Young Lyrics 18 years ago
This song has a vague interpretation and a specific one.

Specifically, Highanxietymind is absolutely correct. This is a cautionary word against being too eager to embrace straight edge too young. A kid who hasn't even had time to learn what's right for him or her may feel pressure to break.

More vaguely, it's about not being too eager to join *any* movement or cause too eagerly. It's about being yourself and letting your true values come naturally.

Bane – Swan Song Lyrics 18 years ago
This is a song about when it all goes wrong, a life falls apart, and our heroes abandon us. (No sign of Christ with a sword in his mouth.)

And who are we left with? Our true friends and values show themselves at that moment. They teach us to see the beauty in tragedy. (I'll sit and laugh with you tonight.)

No matter how rough things get, if you have the right stuff inside and the best kind of friend, you'll make it through and still be yourself. Those values and friends will always return. (I will come back for you.)

Bane – Superhero Lyrics 18 years ago
This is simply a song about self control.

Aaron's friend knows she has a habit that's "killing me". The desire to quit is there, and she sees that Aaron doesn't struggle with addiction.

She tells him she doesn't see how he does it, and he does what a good role model does. He tells her that she also has the same strength that he does, and she can beat addiction.

It's a positive song IMO. Not preachy.

Have Heart – Watch Me Sink Lyrics 18 years ago
The narrator (Pat) sees only greed, corruption and apathy in the world he lives in.

Day by day, it wears away his spirit and his mood sinks (like a stone).

He wants to just get out of the world in any way he can. He wants to die because nobody remembers what real love is. He reaches out into the abyss and calls for a single soul who remembers.

Have Heart – Armed With A Mind Lyrics 18 years ago
An anthem of positivity and mental power. Not specifically a straight edge song, but coming from the same moral place. The first half is about people who express themselves only through their fashion and physical appearance.

The second half is about another form of insecurity - one which expresses itself through violence. The narrator is criticizing these people but not condemning them. He's trying to break through their barriers and teach them that their own mind is where their individuality lies.

He's trying to get through to them and help them to better themselves. It's not a preachy song, but a revealing one about aspects of life and the scene that are accepted as normal.

Have Heart – Watch Me Rise Lyrics 18 years ago
My favorite song by Have Heart.

It's a bit complicated and ties together the running theme of the album.

In the beginning, he's feeling like he's failed again. He feels the depression and frustration he's sworn off.

He knows the world sees him as a failure and just some punk kid with no future, but he knows the truth. He has to work hard to erase that image.

The world tries to convince him that his life choices are futile, but he declares he will go down swinging. The end can be summed up with "my life, my choice." He's gonna be himself no matter what, no matter how much it hurts.

Have Heart – To Us Fools Lyrics 18 years ago
The prelude to Something More Than Ink.

The feelings of confusion, betrayal, and frustration when a person you followed abandoned an ideology.

This song specifically refers to the "founding fathers" of the positive youth movement known as straight edge. These people dropped the lifestyle and left hundreds, if not thousands, of kids feeling abandoned. This song personifies their (were) determination to hold strong and continue to be ourselves even in the absence of "heroes."

Have Heart – The Unbreakable Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is about a genuine role model..we all know somebody like this, a person who is inexplicably positive and forever trudges forward despite hardships.

The narrator aspires to be like this person, but realizes despite his admiration he's "so very fucking far" from being that person.

It also turns a classic line, "old man take a look at my life", on its head.

This song displays the humility spoken of earlier in About Face.

Have Heart – About Face Lyrics 18 years ago
A song about overcoming mindless self indulgence and pursuing the goal of being humble and helping others to grow rich in life, through friendship, trials and shared experiences.

"Are you gonna try, or is it gonna be the same fucking song?" refers to the fact that so many people set resolutions and goals for themselves that they never aspire to.

Have Heart – Life Is Hard Enough Lyrics 18 years ago
This song describes an inner conflict.

Does the person struggling with the dillema trudge onward and feel the pain of life, love and loss - or does he attempt to ignore it and cover it with substance abuse?

By the end of the song, it appears he's decided to trudge forward.

Have Heart – Something More Than Ink Lyrics 18 years ago
Pat Flynn wrote this song about Ray Cappo of Youth of Today, who has publicly said he no longer follows the straight edge system of living.

From a more vague point of view, this song could have meaning to anyone because it's about not giving up on something you believe in just because your heroes sold out. It could just as easily be about still loving the game of baseball despite the steroids scandal, or anything people love really. It just so happens to be about straight edge, but the message belongs to everybody.

Have Heart – The Machinist Lyrics 18 years ago
In my opinion, this song appears to have been written as an anthem against the oft-discussed System. Whether's it's any specific system, I can't tell. It could easily be applied to government, the education system, or to organized religion.

The voice of narration in this song is the brave soul fighting against the system. He will use the power of his spoken word to organize others to resist.

Good Clean Fun – Coll-edge Lyrics 18 years ago
This song, like the great majority of GCF songs, is a tongue in cheek satire of serious, tough guy Hardcore bands. If users like Dontutoke don't understand that and actually take them seriously, they'd probably get a good laugh out of that.
