Candlemass – Samarithan Lyrics 16 years ago
If this song has such a kinda happy, positive meaningm, why is it so slow and heavy? Maybe because few people in reality are that nice, or maybe because he thought he would go unrewarded up unitil he was about to die, when he got his reward.

Candlemass – Solitude Lyrics 16 years ago
It should be "dust to..." then earth to earth again I think.

Great song, obvious meaning I think, all things come to an end and he wants his to come sooner.

Soulfly – 9-11-01 Lyrics 16 years ago
For the record, I agree with Metal447, though I'm slightly confused as to whether you hate Americans or not. I hate a lot of the culture, their mentality and certainly the government ("don't like the governement get out of the country" - that's stupid, no-one votes for dictators, not everyone votes for idiots, does that mean these leaders should still be universally supported? It's your choice whether to be selfish and narrow-minded or not, patriotism doesn't have to involve supporting a government you didn't vote for). Anyway the point is whilst I don't like a lot of what America and its people are about, you can generalise and say they're all idiotic bastards - I'm sure many are lovely!

Also Jeffkhaos has something right, some people feel they have something to prove and go about it in the worst possible way.

Soulfly – 9-11-01 Lyrics 16 years ago
You fucking morons, not all of you, but there are quite a few here. By saying you're glad that those people died on 9/11 you're worse than Bush, who is a prick who cares more about money and revenge than the welfare of his nation or anyone else. By saying what Str1ngcheese did about Maggotface, you simply prove you're as bad as he/she is. Idiots. You're a stupid, fucked up individual if you kill, send others to kill, wish people to be dead, pollute and destroy, or if you come out with such dumb, ignorant comments as the ones that have been made here. I hope you feel very fucking ashamed, I almost wish you die or get raped or whatever, but y'know, I'm no asshole.

The song? It doesn't sound amazing, but at least it has meaning, a good, genuine, heartfelt one that comes from love and craing instead of the pointless hate that so many idiots feel. Sometimes silence is better than whatever crap you end up hearing or reading...

Many instrumentals have a meaning to them too! However this might well be one Primus song that has no deeper meaning.

I think it's more specifically about happiness coming and going over time, though otherwise I agree.

Primus – Fisticuffs Lyrics 17 years ago
Maybe it's about how some occupations or hobbies are less risky than others.

Primus – Duchess and the Proverbial Mind Spread Lyrics 17 years ago
I guess the metaphor is about being open-minded, which mushrooms and acid can certainly help you become! The last few lines I think refer to the success that being open-minded and going with good, original ideas, but that there are better and less risky ways of going about it than others, or ways of expanding your mind.

Primus – Bobs Party Time Lounge Lyrics 17 years ago
I read somewhere recently (the bullboard I think) that it's about the character Bob Cock's overdose on cocaine, and his subsequent life in heaven. If so it could mean that there are many pleasures in life, we're only mortal and some things carry a lot of risk, so be careful and stuff.

God Forbid – Judge The Blood Lyrics 17 years ago
I disagree, I think it's about not having prejudice and judging people before knowing them - "break down the walls" referring to treat people well until you know their true attitude, their blood rather than their surface, or face value.

We can't judge people, in terms of 'bad' or 'good' but we CAN judge their attitudes, and try and change that.

God Forbid – Force-Fed Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree too, the way to change opinions is through the media (of all kinds), but convincing through rational argument rather than force or trickery!

God Forbid – Gone Forever Lyrics 17 years ago
I'd agree with gastonreboredo and others rather than Demonfox etc., listen to 'Crucify Your Beliefs' or 'Divinity' and you'll see why.

I always saw it more as questioning the existence of an afterlife, though I think it is both after reading the lyrics more carefully.

God Forbid – Broken Promise Lyrics 17 years ago
I love how whilst most metalcore bands are obsessed with love and associated issues, God Forbid remain varied in their lyrics, with maybe one song on each album dealing with it.

I think that this song is not just about promises, but trust in general.

Also it's one of the best songs for a circle pit...

God Forbid – Anti-Hero Lyrics 17 years ago
An antihero is not just a 'good' person who chooses to do the wrong thing, it's also someone who simply doesn't do the right thing. Rather than do nothing at all, make the 'good/right' choice! I guess in terms of this song that would mean in particular voting...

Primus – Tommy The Cat Lyrics 17 years ago
Yeah, but what's it about?

I have no idea, Opinionhead made the most sense. I know it does have a meaning, they all have metaphors! Les loves them and it's part of what makes Primus so amazing. However, this song baffles me; maybe it's about sexual desire and stuff?

Actually, maybe it's about how we all desire different things in partners, music and life in general. Tommy (in the video) is pretty scruffy, but I guess that's how she likes it!

Personally I love Primus, pretty crazy music but that's how I like it!

Primus – The Ol Diamondback Sturgeon (Fisherman Chronicles, Pt. 3) Lyrics 17 years ago
This is 'songmeangins.net' you idiot, Claypool loves metaphors, so work out the meaning or leave...

Anyway, I agree with The Heckler, except I believe that rather than just being that, that it refers to life and death itself - whatever we do we all die sometime, so don't worry about it - hence the happy guitar riff.

Primus – The Last Superpower AKA Rapscallion Lyrics 17 years ago
I think you're all very right, due to the time he was writing, "I'm the son of a loaded gun", the fact he's openly spoken out against the Bush administration and also because once he said before playing this song live "Don't wanna alarm y'all... But we have a jackass in the Whitehouse".

"blood in my gastank" refers to the Iraq war, the condor bit to how he doesn't care about conservation or the environment.

I did notice Tim looking up on the DVD, maybe it's for inspiration as he whacks that 3rd bass drum!

I'm not sure about the colours, I thought it could refer to ethnicity but the post above makes sense too! What could 'brown' mean if so?

Primus – The Carpenter and the Dainty Bride Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree with both of the above statements. However, considering the last couple of lines, and the fact that there are no other obvious references to preachers and religion, I'd say it's also about the afterlife.

She's had a bad life, her husband (I think) cheated on her because he found happiness elsewhere; because she killed him she'll lose her freedom; The preacher says that if she prays for forgiveness she might go to heaven (where it's better).

The final dark thing is that heaven, regardless of beliefs, can't be prooven to exist. Les said it was a particularly dark song once live! However I think the positive thing to take from it (though Primus are dark, there's always hope in there): We don't know about the afterlife, so make the most of this life, without worrying about how happy you are because it's always better elsewhere!

Primus – The Air Is Getting Slippery Lyrics 17 years ago
Yeah, I totally agree with that chiefhky29, though I stand by everything else I said! It refers to lots of their songs as a reference to their varying setlists and the audience's anticipation of his singing about whatever Primus-y character (e.g. Fats, Jerry), though he really just wants to play Residents covers!

'I'm here to make a buck' shows that he has to play to the audience, and that it is about a live performance.

Primus – Sgt. Baker Lyrics 17 years ago
'And if you calls me "puddin Tame"
I'll stomp you down, boy'

I think it's less about war, which Too Many Puppies addresses, and more about how capitalist society changes us, and how we're forced to be capitalist ourselves.

Or maybe it's another one about conformity (what with Seas of Cheese and Eleven etc. maybe it's a theme for this album) and how we're forced to conform by society ('To make you all a bit like me', 'rape your personality').

submissions
Primus – Pork Soda Lyrics 17 years ago
Beer's full of cholesterol and stuff too, but it's fun! Whilst a very dangerous drug, it's fine in moderation (unlike most other drugs), so I guess maybe the metaphor is, like dieting - don't worry about things in life too much, just do things in moderation - you can have fun without risking death (or becoming fat)!

submissions
Primus – Nature Boy Lyrics 17 years ago
I think Les often uses innuendo just as a joke for such misineterpretation, like in Wynona (something they rarely play as the joke got old).

The actual meaning is either (or both) about doing what you want in your own home, and/or about spending time alone (arguably even mysogyny) and how bad lonliness is.

submissions
Primus – My Name Is Mud Lyrics 17 years ago
if you want to argue about who's the best bassist, go to another forum; this one is for discussing song meanings.

'Murder' is obvious, OF COURSE it's not that simple. The literal meaning is referred to live, I think Les said something about the guy who murdered JFK going to see a Dr. Mud.

The metaphor I think is that murder is a silly thing that can only be the product of stupidity and irrational anger (exception: insanity), so don't be stupid and control your emotions!

submissions
Primus – My Friend Fats Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree with the above post, though a lot of it is surely about the hell his addiction has caused (Les even sings 'hee-ee-ee-ell' though the lyrics don't mention it), and 'The Air is Getting Slippery' mentions Fats and his METH addiction.

Primus – Golden Boy Lyrics 17 years ago
'and his forehead made of wood
An affidavit from the principal says,"This
boy just ain't no good"'

This means (I think) that he's stupid, and by 'no good' it's meant that he's bad morally; Whilst the other person was bad as a thief, this person is just as bad if not worse for shooting him, and especially for not regretting it.

So some people are stupid and never learn their lesson - the fun music going with the lyrics refers to how, whilst this is frustrating, it's just how some people are so live with it and be happy regardles!

Primus – DMV Lyrics 17 years ago
There are metaphors in all Primus songs! Of coure it's not just about the DMV, half the lyrics aren't referring to it...

I think it's about life and our satisfaction from it; there are things to relieve us from the stress, but they're bad in their own way, so isn't life kind of pointless? Then again, what point could it have and how would you know that it's the true meaning? So just get on with it, enjoy the good things and put up with the bad, because that's the way life is!

Spegetti Western is anti-pot, as is this, and Les has quit drugs now.

Primus – De Anza Jig Lyrics 17 years ago
Maybe it's about being remembered after you're gone, or about creating a legacy; you can kind of choose how you'll be remembered depending on what you do: good, bad or just crazy.

Each verse is about remembering someone for some reason, so that's what I think the metaphor is, the literal meaning is kinda obvious, like 'The Air is Getting Slippery' it just ties together different characters mentioned in Primus songs.

Primus – American Life Lyrics 17 years ago
Whilst Les isn't perfect, I don't think he'd have a moral metaphor about 'immigrants taking jobs from veterans'; it's just not true and its bad morality - it's as if Too Many Puppies is a pro-war song! Surely it's the opposite - you can't blame people for such things which aren't true, regardless of who you are things aren't perfect but they could be worse, you always have something to be happy for (hope, possessions, dignity). The differing lyrics you mention just is stressing the point that though you may think you have nothing, you do, and you should be happy for it.

It's how democratic society works; some are better off but that just gives the worst-off something to aspire towards. I can see how the above person has read into the lyrics, but the 'boys in uniform' thing is a weak link, and its bad morality anyway.

The albums partly about Primus getting a record contract; so this song relates to that in how though they aren't the most popular of bands, they're happy for what they HAVE got.

Primus – Del Davis Tree Farm Lyrics 17 years ago
The metaphor must have something to do with the commercial side of Christmas, the joy that happens when someone gives a present contrasted with the greed of big companies, the expectation of gifts, the stress on material value and so on.

Primus – Bob Lyrics 17 years ago
Les Claypool said live once (can't remember when but something from Primuslive) that there is no real Bob and that he thought it was just a cool name, whilst the lyrics seem to tell otherwise, so maybe it's based on an actual person or similar events but no friend of theirs hung themselves, at least not one called Bob.

I certainly don't think the character is a nazi, I think he just shaved his head for a change that didn't help and the pictures could just be a metaphor for beauty that's never appreciated, or someone's magnificant work that was never appreciated when they were alive.

The song's dark enough without it being about an actual person, I can barely listen to it anymore it's so depressing.

Primus – Coddingtown Lyrics 17 years ago
This song makes me want to go places, indeed it's a great song to walk or run to. Anyway it makes me think of how we're all rushing to go somewhere, do something, that's what he's rushing to do.

I think Les seems to like having a metaphor and a personal meaning too in all (?) of his songs (see Groundhogs Day, think he said something live or in an interview) but anyway that's what I think they are for this song.

Primus – Mr. Knowitall Lyrics 17 years ago
Metaphor: nobodies perferct
Personal meaning: well, I think it could be about Les Clapyool himself if you think about the lyrics carefully, especially remembering the words to Shake Hands With Beef, and also thinking about how hard it would be even for him to think of a word that rhymes with eloquent!

Primus – The Toys Go Winding Down Lyrics 17 years ago
pudding time means the same as it did in the song of the same name - payday. It means that and nothing more - "pudding time children" refers to how children just look forward to their pudding and labour through the rest of the meal (as someone works until they get paid).

In this song it definitely means that he's sad that his hobby (fishing) is suffering due to someone's greedy strive for 'pudding time' (payday/money) resulting in overfishing.

I still think it's about growing old due to the nostalgia (especially towards the end) and the title (toys is children reference and winding down means getting older). If the 'wing' thing does have anything to do with mental illness (could easily be imprisonment for crime) then it's because their release is like being a child again, fresh to play in the world as if they were reborn. Whilst dark, the really depressing bit is how most of us are more like Les in the 2nd verse - had our youth, had our fun, and now we're struggling on till the day we die - things aren't as good as they used to be either (sterotypical elderly person's thought).

Primus – Wynona's Big Brown Beaver Lyrics 17 years ago
Any innuendo I think is a delibrate poke at those who enjoy it or seek it. The video is indeed amazing, I love the walking too. Les has said it has nothing to do with Wynona Rider though I guess he'd have to say that regardless of whether it is or not, the video seems to imply it is actually about a beaver and some people just have dirty minds!

Primus – Tommy The Cat (live) Lyrics 17 years ago
whilst I normally like to focus on song meaning, I'd like to point out that whilst I prefer Herb's style etc. and how he uses all of his kit, Brain, Travis Barker and the like know how to use a small kit and get the most out of it. Some of the best drummers are jazz drummers with similar small kits.

Yeah it is better live, though not so short (-ish) and sweet. Meaning and lyrics the same really, those extra ones there are irrelevant to the song.

submissions
Primus – The Toys Go Winding Down Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree with WarmPBR, its as if Les feels a little sad about getting older, whilst not elderly he's not youthful and times have changed negatively since his youth - specifically in terms of fishing.

The start of the song could therefore be either youth or happier nostalgia.

Primus – The Ol Diamondback Sturgeon (Fisherman Chronicles, Pt. 3) Lyrics 17 years ago

Primus – Spegetti Western Lyrics 17 years ago
Whilst the literal meaning is obvious, the metaphor I think is about how life can be repititive - that drum beat whilst amazing is repititive and puts me off this song. "stooooned again" and other lyrics refer to doing the same thing everyday or at least routinely, and possibly along with some of Groundhog's Day's lyrics encourage variety to keep life interesting.

Well for a while I got high every night and listened to Primus, now I do other things whilst still playing them occaisonally and it is more interesting/satisfying!

Primus – Shake Hands With Beef Lyrics 17 years ago
Whilst there might be a metaphor or entendre or whatever as with Wynona's Big Brown Beaver, I heard in a bootleg him saying that it's about his vegetarian friends who weren't always that way are sometimes tempted by the taste of meat.

Just because they're a rock band doesn't mean they on care about sex, drugs and rock n roll, and those certainly aren't their favourite lyrical topics as many people here seem to think!

submissions
Primus – Restin' Bones Lyrics 17 years ago
It certainly isn't just about smoking weed, and if its about drugs at all its about taking it easy later in life after bingeing on drugs and such at a younger age. It kind of feels like he's talking about dying, or more likely stopping to think about his heroes and suchlike and paying them respect, with some nostalgia and learning from past mistakes too maybe.
