This chorus line refers to western societal expectations about what is "right" and "mature" for an adult to be - conforming to certain standards, in other words.
"And she doesn't care."
She's not buying into these forced social roles, no matter what others think of her.
I like a previous commenter's idea that this might actually be autobiographical in terms of being a rock band, especially one that everybody seems to see as having sold out. They do what they want, no matter what society thinks they should be doing. And they'd do it all over again. |

upon first listen, I was convinced this was some sort of Nickelback hybrid. looping it for 20 minutes, however, as with any good song, helped me see the light. what a great song...Shaun seems somehow happier and yet still angry as ever. here's hoping the rest of this album is gold. |

This has to be one of the all-time greatest songs ever written...the first time I heard it, i thought he was describing everything I've ever felt deep inside.
Basically, Chris is saying that, as Audiogarden1 said, when we're at our more honest and vulnerable, we just want somebody else to experience life with. The whole idea of the end of the world is, of course, not to be taken literally, but is symbolic of desperate times we all have.
No children, no house full of roses...just the end of the world and me. Just brilliant. |

I'm convinced more and more that this song is meant to connect directly to Mesmerize. As has been previously mentioned, it would appear as though Hypnotize actually fucntions as a precursor to Mesmerize with the link between the two Soldier Side tracks being unmistakable.
Listening to the last riff on Lonely Day, I'm inclined to agree with this theory even more. Does nobody else take notice of the fact that SOAD sample's Soldier Side (Intro) at the very end of Lonely Day? The whole part where it suddenly switches to the higher guitar part that fades away in the background is definiteyl from the opening track of Mesmerize, suggesting that this song really ought to be considered part of SOAD's ongoing anti-war campaign between the two CD's.
I don't particularly enjoy this song, but I'm warming up to the idea of the dual disc and how SOAD themed the two CDs. |

pretty clearly about drug addiction and various people trying to convince him to get out while he can
oh, and to help make more sense out of the lyrics, they should actually read:
"If you want to get out alive.....oh-oh, RUN for your life."
ie. don't start in the first place, which makes a ton more sense than "hold on for your life" |
