Glen Campbell – Wichita Lineman Lyrics 15 years ago
I think the part about "needing more than wanting", but "wanting for all time" is very clever.

I don't think it's saying he's dependent, per se. It's saying he both needs and wants her(a safer way for him to say he loves her), and he's illustrating how intense his feelings are by pointing out that if he could "want her for all time" yet also need her EVEN MORE than that, it must mean his feelings are very real, very deep. I think it's using one to emphasize the other and emphasize BOTH at the same time.

I've always felt it's pretty much the narrator attempting to be flowery and emotional, trying to get across how much he cares. I imagine the guy is very work-oriented, not very open with his feelings, and that line is his way of trying to express the vastness of his love for her. It really paints a picture in my mind. As in: "I want you for all time, see? And yet somehow I find that I also NEED you even MORE than I want you...which is overhwelming, because I never knew I could need and want a person so much."

In my mind it's one of those scenes where a person deeply loves someone but can't directly say it, due to being reserved/not knowing how to express it, so the person outlines it with lines like the ones above.

Makes the hopeless romantic in me sigh.

Paul McCartney – Another Day Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is so perfect at describing a life. A single woman loves a man who comes and goes without ever committing to her in any way. Due to this, everything else in her life kind of fades into a blur around her as she becomes worn down by the situation with the man. She's feeling like her life is just a permanent lull. Monotonous, boring, always the same, filled only with her work. Every day is "just another day" in a long series of days exactly like the one before it. I love how the lyrics focus on the tiny details of getting ready for her day. Those details are all that make up most of her life. The kind of sadness associated with this concept is expressed very well in a clever way using that kind of imagery.

I sometimes find myself relating to this song, because at times, a situation can just cast a huge shadow over everything else in life and then the days just all seem the same because the fog of it paints everything in the same boring haze.

Roy Orbison – Crying Lyrics 15 years ago
Yeah, about running into someone you thought you were over, only to realize you still love the person very much.

In the duet with k.d. lang, when she first starts in with the chorus, the way she says "crying" is so incredibly powerful. Her voice says it all.

The Innocence Mission – Small Planes Lyrics 15 years ago
She feels small and unimportant, lost...as if nothing she says or does will make a difference. She wants things she feels helpless to achieve. She's looking to the future and wondering when she'll finally get out, where she'll end up, and who she'll meet along the way.

Restlessness, longing, introspection... one of my favorites. I like the image I get of toy airplanes hanging from the ceiling. They're made to look like they're flying, going somewhere fantastic, but in reality they're stuck in the same place forever.

Pink – Heartbreaker Lyrics 15 years ago
My god, if this isn't -the- anthem for someone who has had her trust obliterated beyond all recognition, I don't know what is.

"There's always this one question
That keeps me up at night:
Are you my greatest love
Or disappointment, in my life?"

I have yet to see this sentiment summed up any better than these lines. Amazing. It's true, after you've been shit on and fucked over so many times, you really automatically eye everyone with trepidation. Every single time.

Lior – I'll Forget You Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree that the person the narrator is singing about will never be forgotten by him(as seen in the line "this love never fades,"), but the heart of the issue regarding "forgetting" in time is that he will "rescue" himself by not devoting his heart to trying to save their relationship. He can't save it without her help, and to attempt to do so will only cause him more pain. It also is said "it's time to forget the road we never traveled along," which implies this is a relationship that always skirted the edge of seriousness, of commitment, and I think that is a big part of why it is hard for him to move on.

He's saying he's going to try to move along, because in the end, he'll have a healthier life that way. He loves her, and always will ... but sometimes you just have to admit defeat.

Bob Dylan – You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go Lyrics 16 years ago
This song perfectly gets across thoughts I sometimes have regarding love and how fleeting it can be. That state of mind where I acknowledge things could disappear any time, but relishing the great things while they're still with me. It's a matter of fact declaration. He wants her to know how much he truly feels about her while she's still around, and how he'll never forget about her once she's gone on.

The vivid descriptions get me every time, as does his amused tone of voice... it makes me imagine he's talking to the person the song is about, and he's got a silly grin on his face before saying "Hey, don't worry about it, no matter how lonely you make me, I'll love you anyway."

Pinback – Fortress Lyrics 16 years ago
I've always felt this song is about long summers spent playing online PC games.

It's annoying when you finally gather a party, and you're trying to find a certain fortress or boss or something, but you can't seem to locate what you're searching for, and you're just wandering back and forth trying to remember where the hell it is and meanwhile everyone in the party is bitching at you to hurry it up...and it gets frustrating.

Harry Connick, Jr. – A Wink And A Smile Lyrics 16 years ago
You can't have your dreams turn out exactly the way you want them to, but sometimes they do come true, and in unexpected ways that turn out to be better than what you'd hoped for originally.

There's something so wonderful to me about the line "we go together like a wink and a smile." It's not just using a random pair of things, it says more than that. To me it says that when they're together, they're two expressions of joy that go perfectly together to express something in a way that simply can't be expressed without the other.

George Harrison – Rocking Chair in Hawaii Lyrics 16 years ago
About a woman the narrator is interested in, who is so afraid of making a mistake when it comes to relationships that she won't even start anything in the first place, nor admit to her feelings at all.

He's saying he's into her and would be interested in starting something, but as long as she's holding herself back, they'll never go anywhere.

A lot of times people who hold things back seem to think they're saving themselves heartache, but what we often don't realize is that by holding things back, we're often causing ourselves heartache in the long run.

...So he goes outside to a nice spot and sits in a rocking chair and tries to forget his cares. Such a simple concept and so true. I love the way he works in "I love you" at the end of his sighs.

Oren Lavie – Her Morning Elegance Lyrics 16 years ago
Perhaps the girl suffers from a nervous disorder. Panic attacks really make you fight for your life, it's a horrible prison you're constantly trying to break out of.

The lyrics are such wonderful slices of her life. I love the little sketches of the different areas of her interest. The bit about hearing the noise outside and pondering if it's a stranger stopping by or a letter in the mail. You're constantly hoping for life's wonders to come to you when you're trapped inside your own world.

"as she goes in a store
where the people are pleasantly
strange"

I love this bit, because when you're stuck in something, people out in the world who are happy, seemingly careless and free, they seem to strange and foreign, because they seem to be lightyears away from where you are in your life.

Mason Jennings – Ballad For My One True Love Lyrics 16 years ago
There's something so deeply touching about the line "god bless the babies that sleep in you" ... it brings about this amazing sense of possiblity that can exist in life. Really, when you think about it, as a woman, the children you are capable of bearing are infinite. A rocket scientist, a musician, a painter, a lawyer, a doll maker... someone who will touch someone's heart in a way that was never thought possible before... it's an amazing point to ponder.

The idea of a man laying about pondering writing a ballad for someone he loves so deeply that he thinks about the children she could possibly bring into the world...there's nothing sweeter than that sentiment, to me. A truly gorgeous song in all ways.

The Magnetic Fields – Too Drunk To Dream Lyrics 16 years ago
Classic Stephin, right here. One of my favorites off of Distortion, hands down. A sarcastic and biting tale of a guy getting plastered so he won't have to deal with the feelings left over after a breakup. I love the before and after contrast of how it's like when you're sober and what it's like once you're drunk... "the moon is nearer"!

So morbidly funny, I love it. It was amazing hearing this live. Somehow with the distortion stripped off, it's even darker. :P

King Missile – My Heart Is A Flower Lyrics 16 years ago
This has such a danceable melody. I love the percussion in the background. Something about this whole song reminds me of A Chicken With Its Head Cut Off by The Magnetic Fields.

This is a good anthem for people who feel like they're big idiots sometimes. Making a big mess, "stinking things up," waiting for someone else to come along and give your life meaning(the pollen line)... very clever. The line about waiting till next spring gives the song some hopefulness, at least. :P

Lisa Loeb – Furious Rose Lyrics 16 years ago
From a fansite, a quote from Lisa regarding the bit about wild plums and agrimony:

"Wild Plums and Agrimony are flowers. In the song I reference a Victorian dictionary of flowers, which explains that different flowers represent different things. Wild Plums represent independence, and Agrimony represents thankfulness and gratitude. In the song, Freud misdiagnoses Rose as a hysterical woman. Rose is a misunderstood individual, so she is begging for these flowers, obvious symbols of the qualities that she possesses, but qualities that are ignored by the doctor. Rose is a subtle and emotionally substantial person, but she's being pigeonholed as a crazy person. She needs something to represent these traits for her, since Freud can't see them in her. He talks down to her and doesn't take her seriously, and she's frustrated. That's why she says, "I bet you don't even know what that means." A man as smart as Freud should know the symbolic meaning of something as simple as a flower, but inside, she knows that he's ignorant in some ways - his eyes are not open, even though he acts as if he can analyze her."

When I read this quote, it made me fall in love with this song even more. Very clever way to illustrate a person's traits.

Darren Hanlon – I Wish That I Was Beautiful For You Lyrics 16 years ago
When you feel far less than beautiful, often in relationships you find yourself wishing you could be beautiful for the person you love, because you see your partner as breathtaking. Sometimes it's hard to accept the fact someone you find so wonderful could want you when you feel so ugly yourself.

His voice captures that whole feeling so well, as do the lyrics themselves. The tinkly bits throughout the song are so wonderful!

Frou Frou – Only Got One Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree with many of the other comments...to me it's the narrator talking to someone who lets other things get in the way of their life, follow along with the easy route, etc. She can't guage how the person really feels about whatever they claim to want, because they seem to give up before really trying no matter how much the person claims to want to do/be something.

She's trying to tell the person that there's only one go at this life, so you ought to live it to the fullest, yes... but at the same time, she's accepting the fact that in the end, it's just that: Their life, and she can't control it or influence the choices the person makes. In the end, it's only that person's choice. She can merely say her views and hope that her advice may help out in the end. She keeps repeating "you've only got one" as if hoping eventually that fact'll sink in. She accepts that this person can live their life however they want, but she still doesn't want to give up on the hope of helping the person keep from wasting their days away. :P

I love the way the opening bars sound like a sunrise... she may be giving up(in a way) on saving this person from themselves, so to speak, but there's still a hope in her voice. Wonderful!

As previous comments said, it's about the movie Vertigo by Alfred Hitchcock.

"He isn't really falling for this, is he?"

One line to sum up the whole movie, really...Vertigo has one of the most wonderful plots ever, and I love how in a few verses, you really get a vivid picture of the film. It's such a mindfuck, and I love how this song pokes fun at how yanked around the main character is. Very clever...the music itself gives off that whole dizzy feeling as well.

The Rentals – The Love I'm Searching For Lyrics 16 years ago
The acoustic version of this song is one of the best songs I've ever heard... The SLEIGHBELLS!

The technical jargon thrown into the lyrics give it such a clinical and detached perspective, but all the while he's talking about how he longs for this person and feels she should be with him, which, that sentiment is the opposite of clinical and detached. I love the contrast there.

Sometimes things get so fucked up, all you can really do is "turn off the machine" and walk away from it. He's tried his ass off, the "system failed" so to speak...but that doesn't mean he doesn't wish things were different. He wishes intensely things would work out between them no matter how hard it'd be to accomplish that. So sweet and resigned.

Red House Painters – Have You Forgotten Lyrics 16 years ago
In my mind it's about an old friend spending an evening with a person he has known for a very long time. He got word of her being depressed and came to see her, she's on the verge of suicide, in bed and silent("Wrapped in white sheets..."). He's reminiscing over memories they shared in an effort to remind her of a time when she felt life was worth living, when things were joyful, innocent. Trying to pull her out of the void she's fallen into. Attempting to remind her of love.

This is definitely nostalgia in song form for me.

Jon Brion – Here We Go Lyrics 16 years ago
I love this song because it speaks to the weirdos in the world. The people who have so many quirks, so many problems, so many issues...the kind of person most people bypass because they don't want to deal with those problems.

It's saying that when you're screwed up, you tend to hide away because you're used to rejection...but it's only hurting yourself to close yourself off entirely like that. Saying that even though we often feel like we're all living in different dimensions, like we have to protect ourselves against everything, we still need to open ourselves a little if we ever want to find someone who will not only "put up" with the problems but perhaps love you for them.

Making yourself vulnerable is terrifying...but it can be worth it in the end. I love the music itself because it says what even the lyrics can't. This song encompasses that unsure worried hopeful feeling you get when you want to do something but the fear holds you back.

Semisonic – Who's Stopping You? Lyrics 16 years ago
I've always felt this was from the perspective of an ex talking to their former lover again. Saying that he thought she said she was going to change for the better after they broke up, but it seems that in the end, the only thing holding her back was herself, because it's been a long time since they last spoke but she's still in the same place she was back then. She's so afraid of failing that she won't even try, and he's trying to tell her that as long as she sits still she'll never get ANYWHERE, neither failure nor accomplishment can occur when you do nothing about what you want.

It's basically a guy trying to tell a chick to seize the day and stop fearing the unknown so much.

The bit about watching "old reruns" says to me that while they're talking she's recalling pleasant times they had together in the past, and he's saying instead of dwelling on the past, building a future could be even better...if she'd just "step into the light" instead of fearing the "emptiness lurking" in her head that she fears.

Jon Brion – Walking Through Walls Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is about feeling like you're going to kick the ass of everyone against you and prove you've got more strength than people give you credit for.

I love the imagery in this. The bit about being a fireball is awesome. It sounds kinda self destructive but at the same time not really... it's throwing caution to the wind pretty much and welcoming whatever happens with open arms.

I love the vocalizations at the end. Sounds like a car idling and honking its horn.

I love the xylophone or whatever it is that leads the song in the background of the rest of the song. It's so playful and childlike in tune, and then the lyrics are so... like the previous poster said, hardcore double entendre. Get a grip, indeed.

Semisonic are so great at the whole "sexy songs that sound innocent until you pay attention to the lyrics" thing. :P

Rilo Kiley – Capturing Moods Lyrics 16 years ago
I've always felt this song was about being in a relationship where the other person is always making excuses or just overly cautious, and not wanting to take a chance or grow up to the point it'd take to be able to "go anywhere" with her as a couple. I agree that the baseball card part is saying the guy doesn't have a job, but wants to live on his own. if he'd give up his ties to being a "child" then he could achieve the adult life he seems to want but is too afraid to reach for.

She's saying she's willing to wait...but feels as if she's going to have to wait a very long time, hence the "wasting the best years of our lives" bit, meaning that while she's giving him time, the time they could be sharing is just flying right out the window.

A song about frustrated patience.

The Cardigans – You're The Storm Lyrics 16 years ago
"All's fair in love and war" and "divide and conquer" taken to another level. Definitely about the trials and tribulations of sex and a relationship and telling the guy if he takes a chance, she won't say no.

I've always loved the other imagery alongside the war stuff, with the angel/devil angle. She's been "good" for a long time(an angel), taking time out from the dating game probably, but when he comes along and suggests things and asks for stuff(like a devil) she realizes that while she was free of worry and stuff during this time of "calm," it was really boring. The hectic business of romance is what she wants in her life. She wants to do more than just exist, she wants to live life.

I love the nautical feel of this one in the music itself.

The Features – The Idea of Growing Old Lyrics 16 years ago
This reminds me (lyrically) of "When I'm Sixty-Four" by The Beatles. I love the whole topic of growing old with someone. It's a comfy, relaxed kind of love. A very cute song about how when you really connect with someone, the idea of sharing everything, even the boring details of everyday life, makes you love the idea of getting up there in years with the person.

A nice song about looking forward to the future. Optimistic to the max. :p

Haha, I saw that list too, and I was kinda sad because I LOVE this song, too. Ok, so it's probably one of the corniest songs in the world, but...well, it's a good way to put the kinda feeling into words. It's got an amazingly fun tune! I feel like busting out on the dancefloor when I listen to it. :P

Regina Spektor – Better Lyrics 16 years ago
Yeah, for me, this is a song about trying to reach somebody going through a huge problem, a problem that you can't really offer any concrete help with. It's frustrating when you know someone going through some bad shit, and you feel helpless, because at the same time, you know the person won't tell anyone else about it, so you wonder how they'll ever get help with the issue if they won't ever let anyone know they have a problem(hence the part about not speaking the name). It's a very frustrating and troublesome situation to be in.

It sounds to me like the person she's singing to is reaching out to her for comfort specifically, possibly wanting to start things with her of a physical nature for comfort(hence her offering to kiss where it's sore), and she's saying she'll do anything that will make things better, but at the same time, she's completely at a loss as to whether anything she does COULD help at all.

(I also agree with the angle vintageperson is getting at)

The Moldy Peaches – Nothing Came Out Lyrics 16 years ago
About being tongue-tied around someone you like a lot. You feel like the biggest loser because no matter how you try, it's always the same...nothing comes out.

There are a lot of songs about that subject, but this one really touches me because in this case, she's talking about wanting to do things with the guy that I can totally identify with. Watching cartoon that I love into the wee hours, napping together, goofing off around town...I think if you found someone to do those things with, it'd be pretty special. It's just the roadblock of actually saying this to the person's face that can ruin it all.

It's so nakedly honest. If you're shy or really unsure about things, it's near impossible to say anything relating to feelings to someone. I've yet to hear a song that puts it any better than this one.

Also, the phone ringing is priceless. :p

Barenaked Ladies – Off The Hook Lyrics 16 years ago
I love this song, because it starts off using "off the hook" to mean letting someone get away with something. This picture of a girl being cheated on and letting the guy back in. Then in the middle of the song, she's getting wise, getting pissed, pondering making him eat his words "off the hook" ...and then comes the big finish, when she's finally gotten the courage to really do something about things. Decides this guy is worth fuckall and she isn't going to be used anymore, and "off the hook" is used to mean she WON'T be letting him back in again. Very clever. One of those songs from Maroon that I kinda forget about until it comes on shuffle or something, but it's one I put on repeat once I rediscover it.

This song's always gotten me through periods of time where I've felt like a real idiot for letting myself be used, it's a nice anthem for getting past blocks in life.

Jon Brion – Ruin My Day Lyrics 16 years ago
Definitely a song about a past love who comes out of nowhere one day, years after having last spoken, when he's moved on, and she tears his world back down a little bit, because it throws him back into thoughts of things he thought he'd buried for good. A feeling of confusion that ruins his day, wondering why the hell she decided to contact him after all this time. Wondering what the point is, etc. It's like she doesn't -want- him to move on.

"I cannot move a mountain now;
I can no longer run.
I cannot be who I was then:

I think this song describes how you feel after you finally have closure with an issue that's been haunting you for a while. you're standing in the crossroads of your life, and you realize you'll never go back to what you once had, the life you once led, the person you once were. you begin to wonder if you were ever really fully the person you thought you were then, or if you were merely in denial the entire time up until now...at least, that's what it means to me.

Ani DiFranco – The Whole Night Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree with plonkeh. after a while you start to realize you care less about holding up appearances of "just being friends" and begin wanting to see how deep the rabbit hole goes, how strongly you really feel about this, another girl.

my favorite part is the line about walking to the kitchen and thinking about the girl's fingers: that illustrates the fact that once you've accepted your feelings, you can't stop dwelling on it and just let yourself fall even deeper.

as an aside, I love how ani says "girl cheeks." :p

The Dresden Dolls – Good Day Lyrics 16 years ago
I don't even see this as a romantic song at all, I see this as dealing with one of those "friends" ... the type who don't give even half a shit about you. they are always willing to dump their bad days on you, but the minute you want to talk to them about anything, they lose interest.

"i'm not suggesting you up and line me up for questioning
but jesus think about the bridges you are burning"

this bit goes shows that people like that, they're so self-involved, so selfish, that they don't notice nor care that the more they neglect people, the more bridges they burn.

I always joke that those kind of people, you could be in the middle of talking about your day and say something like "I'm on fire, I'm dying" and they wouldn't even notice what you'd said and just nod their heads and say "uh huh." when I first heard this song, I laughed, because of that line being in the song. :p

in the end, no matter how big of an asshole a not-such-a-friend is, you never quite feel angry enough to not care how they're treating you. it always makes you feel unloved.

A Fine Frenzy – Almost Lover Lyrics 16 years ago
The meaning for me is she fell for the sweet lies of somebody she thought she could trust, and he abruptly left her once she'd fully opened up to him. Their relationship was one of those "almost, but not really" types, and she always hung on hoping it would evolve into something more, because he always said "soon" when it came to when things were finally going to happen. Now that things are over, she misses him, but has no illusions of thinking he feels any remorse or longing for her in return...she realizes it was just a stupid game for him.

It's a bittersweet song, though I think also hopeful. She's saying goodbye to what they had, giving -herself- closure in her own way, and going to move on no matter what. A pretty positive thought there.

Alanis Morissette – King Of Pain Lyrics 17 years ago
This is one of the best covers I've ever heard.

This is one of those songs that to me perfectly describes a feeling I find hard to put into words: How at times, really hard times, you feel detached. Far away from yourself...like you're on the moon just watching the earth in silence. You are so overwhelmed, you just disconnect entirely. You wish someone would rescue you from whatever it is hurting you, but you know you'll always have to go it alone...it's always been that way, and you start feeling like you're the only person who feels that way, like it's some title you hold.

As an aside, I love the play on words with rain/reign, heh.

I think it's a song about how even when your life feels like it's full of troubles that drag you down, you can always recall happy summers of your past and feel warmed by the memories. When you're a kid, summer is the free zone, the land of no problems or responsibilities. Recalling that feeling almost makes things in the present feel okay again, because if magic was possible back then, it's possible that magic will happen again someday.

Trespassers William – Vapour Trail Lyrics 17 years ago
To me, it encompasses a feeling of resignation over something you cannot change, but desperately wish to. Reminds me of situations where you only see a person for a brief period of time every so often, and when you do, you have all these things inside you want to say or do... and you wind up doing nothing because of fear, lack of time, timing being wrong, etc.

It's a beautiful cover, her voice perfectly suited to it. I think the vapour trail bit itself refers to the fact their relationship is so prominent in her life(a white trail stark against the blue sky), and then so quickly, it seems, fades away(as vapour trails do).

When dealing with loss, you often go into autopilot during tasks that lead you to dwell on that loss...like packing up belongings, having that emptiness surrounding you where someone else used to be. I think two people felt a connection between each other, and it took them a while to admit it to each other. They got together, and things became serious, and the girl got cold feet or something. Poe – If You Were Here Lyrics 17 years ago
Such a beautiful song about making peace with the past, accepting how things went... and embracing those beautiful, small things that make up memories she has of him. They may not have had the relationship she wished for while he was living, but she can look back on things and appreciate the good that was there. A lot of times, the most important memories are the most trivial to most people.

"You could not feel the value that I placed
On every look that crossed your face,"

It's strange to realize how much you looked for approval from someone... yearning to see a smile cross that person's face.

The way she says "I love you" toward the end breaks my heart.

She's surprised and a little scared at the realization that she'd go through hell and high water for this person, she'd give up everything for him... and while she's hopeful things are getting better, there's always this voice in the back of her mind reminding her that he's always hurt and let her down in the past.

"You said 'we'll see,'"

Sums up the song pretty well. The person never committed to things, always put things off until later...so all she can do is hope that this time, things really go the way he says they will.

I love the ending, with all the book references and everything, and I always related a lot to this part:

"And here in the foyer, the hallway is small
I don't really think it's a hallway at all
It's a maze..."

It always reminds me of those times in life where it feels like I'm going somewhere, but when I stand back and look at it, I realize all it was doing was leading me away from what is really important. A circle of nothing. When I realize that, I'm free. It's a very hopeful song... resigned to reality but hopeful about what is possible.

Poe – Not A Virgin Lyrics 17 years ago
I've always seen it as more about having control over a guy/relationship in general than plain out sex. She sees through the bullshit. You can't trick her with the lies anymore because she has been there quite a few times and already knows how most people put up a front to get what they want. Saying she's not a "virgin" is to say that when you're naive, you can get tricked into a lot of things because you're inexperienced. She's saying if you're going to try playing any games with her, it's going to be like playing with fire because she's not a "virgin" anymore and knows the shit some people make up to emotionally and physically screw with a person.

Poe – 5&½ Minute Hallway Lyrics 17 years ago
"And just when I think I've found the trick
I'm tumbling like an echo..."

I love these lines, because it describes that weird dynamic you have with people sometimes. You're never quite sure if you'll win or lose. It seems no matter what you do, instead of continuing to walk on through, you just fall right off the cliff again every time. Over and over again, like an echo.
