I Wish That I Was Beautiful For You Lyrics
I wish that I was beautiful for you
I wish that I inspired tiny fireworks inside the way you do
So delicately made, a prayer left un-prayed
Before the morning sky fades up to blue
And I wish that I was beautiful for you
I wish that somehow I could find a pill
For a quick-fix modern tonic
That would change me with one swallow, I would kill
Watch folks line up to pay, stare at me all day
But I'd turn them all away if that be thy will
One tiny little innocuous pill...
But a wish is just a pin in a swimming pool of needles
If, for one night, you need the room
I wish to be your tomb - you can lie in me
Is it possible I've other things you need?
But to be worthy of a single page out of one of those magazines you read
As glossy as a mirror, but mirrors never lie
They're difficult on the eye, it's true
And I wish that I was beautiful for you
I dreamed that we were traveling on a bus
Speeding along an unnamed plain
Towards somewhere and nowhere, there was us
Our hands lay useless in our laps
Like beetles on their backs
We came to a stretch of road
Where a fire had burned the edges all along
It looked as though the highway wore eyeliner
You kissed me by surprise
When I opened my eyes, you'd turned into some old guy
I screamed, but don't forget
Of all these things, I've only dreamed
If, for one night, you need the room
I will to be your tomb - you can lie in me
I wish that I inspired tiny fireworks inside the way you do
So delicately made, a prayer left un-prayed
Before the morning sky fades up to blue
And I wish that I was beautiful for you
For a quick-fix modern tonic
That would change me with one swallow, I would kill
Watch folks line up to pay, stare at me all day
But I'd turn them all away if that be thy will
One tiny little innocuous pill...
But a wish is just a pin in a swimming pool of needles
I wish to be your tomb - you can lie in me
But to be worthy of a single page out of one of those magazines you read
As glossy as a mirror, but mirrors never lie
They're difficult on the eye, it's true
And I wish that I was beautiful for you

When you feel far less than beautiful, often in relationships you find yourself wishing you could be beautiful for the person you love, because you see your partner as breathtaking. Sometimes it's hard to accept the fact someone you find so wonderful could want you when you feel so ugly yourself.
His voice captures that whole feeling so well, as do the lyrics themselves. The tinkly bits throughout the song are so wonderful!

Beautiful song. Shits all over 'punks not dead'.
"I wish that I inspired tiny fireworks inside the way you do So delicately made" Is the most wonderful line from the song.
Makes me think of a certain someone. And just stuff in general.
Mmyeah the lyrics in this song are superb.
"I dreamed that we were travelling on a bus Speeding along an unnamed plain towards somewhere and nowhere there was us Our hands lay useless in our laps Like beetles on their backs"
What a beautiful verse.
As delial was getting at "you find so wonderful could want you when you feel so ugly yourself" is pretty much the overlaying meaning of the song.
When you are so in love with someone you practically warship their existance. They "inspire fireworks" (or intense feelings inside of you). He wishes that he was a better person equal to that if which adornment he places on his love. "to be worthy of one single page out of one of those magazines you read"--a feeling of insignifcance.
The beauty in the song isn't so much physical appearance as an overall exceptional quality of a person. An inner beauty formulated through an intense love.
Only thing I'm not complete sure about is near the end the 'dream about the bus'... the lyrics are beautiful but I don't really undestand the significance of dreaming that the woman he loved turned into something he didnt.
If I had to take a stab I would guess that the man is worshiping the woman from afar, is close, but she probably doesn't know how he feels because he is feeling too insignificant to engage her. Which could be why he has to dream about her.
