Sparklehorse – Painbirds Lyrics 5 months ago
It’s about chronic pain honestly. It’s quite common for pain flares to occur when weather is changing. And sometimes the rain resists and you’re wishing for it to just let it happen and go to a less horrendous baseline..

Of course people can relate to this in different ways, as different kinds of pain. But I always thought this was perfectly describing some states of chronic pain (which he very much struggled with)

Pretty sure the title is a reference to Flannery O’Connor - A Good Man Is Hard To Find

(See also PJ Harvey’s Is This Desire album, with multiple songs that make a reference to stories from this book)

Strapping Young Lad – Love? Lyrics 8 months ago
I understand this comment but I also agree with @Euyavair ‘s comment (and I’m a boring scientist myself!)

I actually get a slightly different sense from this song altogether, less philosophical and more personal to the singer/story, but not necessarily to me. But I’d have to write that all out separately to explain what I mean and I doubt I’ll be doing it… interesting comments overall

I feel the metalhead refers to the needle of the record player (poss referring to her work as well as later in song, let’s play records etc).

Love the song.

Kylie Minogue – Dancing Lyrics 2 years ago
Great song even if you might not think you were into the genre.
As for the lyrics, I enjoy the double entendre… and it’s quite fitting for Kylie Minogue as a cancer survivor, and even as she is aging super gracefully or barely at all and not losing her fun side either, there’s clearly also something wise about this song. Overall a pretty interesting combination.

New Model Army – Green And Grey Lyrics 3 years ago
@[HeathA:36508] interesting, i think that’s probably true for many. I have loved this song for decades and not from Yorkshire or similar climate originally, nor where I live lately. Although I do know some valleys of green and gray from where my grandparents lived so who knows ... But I’ve always been able to relate to the general feeling of this of leaving vs staying where you grew up - a salient theme in my life. But even before I’d gone anywhere as a 13 year old i understood to it and loved it and imagined it, and only years later experience being in that actual landscape or situation myself.

@[scrimshaw:35267] Agree but it sounds more like she is let down by the experience, she is in her ankles, knees over her head in actuality even if ending chorus goes back to walk on water. Makes more sense with the references mentioned to prior “failures” In the sea. At least this is the mood I felt. (You guys wrote on same date and me on night of Oct 13 but it’s after midnight )

Fiona Apple – Criminal Lyrics 3 years ago
@[capitanrepollo:35088] I was making a playlist and got distracted on here for a bit and saw as it’s a recent comment. I didn’t even realise people commented here still! I think there are multiple interpretations, but was getting this feeling too, pondering such dynamics, even used “playing God” in what I wrote last night. I agree you must detect and get out fast (as you can, baby ;)). It’s not not that you’re not lovable/not good enough. This is an unforgiving, toxic, controlling person who is trying desperately to hide their own insecurities and fears that they may be unlovable or not good enough and their way of maintaining power and control is protecting these things onto others... This is deeply unfair to others, yes, but they don’t do themselves any favors either as it catches up with them over their lives. A sad story overall.

PJ Harvey – The River Lyrics 4 years ago
These are the lyrics to a different song. This is “The River”, not River Anacostia.
Lyrics are:

And they came to the river
And they came from the road
And he wanted the sun
Just to call his own

And they walked on the dirt
And they walked from the road
'Til they came to the river
'Til they came up close

Throw your pain in the river
Throw your pain in the river
Leave your pain in the river
To be washed away slow

And we walked without words
And we walked with our lives
Two silent birds circled by
Like a pain in the river
And the pain in the river
And the white sun scattered
Washed away this slow

And we followed the river
And we followed the road
And we walked through this land
And we called it a home

But he wanted the sun
And I wanted the whole
And the white light scatters
And the sun sets low

Like a pain in the river
Like a pain in the river
Like a white light scatters
To be washed away slow

Like a pain in the river
Like a pain in the river
Like the way life scattered
To be washed away slow

Radiohead – Paranoid Android Lyrics 5 years ago
@[BlackEyedAngels:29436] not reading too much. Just reading. It's too much a coincidence - paranoid android, "first against the wall when the revolution comes", references to rain... It still has enough vagueness to allow people's own interpretation but I think there is a link to Hitchhiker's Guide.

PJ Harvey – Kamikaze Lyrics 5 years ago
@[blackaliss:27053] could be also perspective of sperm of one man who gets there to find all these other "kamikaze" sperms there blocking its way. Less likely considering the perspective the narrative takes (found me, you can't touch me etc) fits the egg better.. I don't think it's necessary to take the part about kamikaze sperm so literally anyway - might've been a way to veil the nature of the army being mentioned , whilst making an indirect reference.

PJ Harvey – Kamikaze Lyrics 5 years ago
Or rather one interpretation...
I couldn't find any sources that made an explicit link except somehow I got onto the concept of "kamikaze sperm" and boom -- there is a narrative here! That panicky but "i can handle this" pace in music and lyrics (how could this happen, they found me with an army (the egg), you don't touch me.. beyond all reason, time etc etc). It all makes sense.
I love this song regardless and I'm not saying this has to be about a condom breaking or the guy stealthing, or the morning after pill or abortion or anything else super specific. Maybe it has nothing to do with kamikaze sperm and fertilization (one eye, one tooth - need one sperm to "bite in" and penetrate out of an army of thousands). It does fit well though, better than 9/11 (which had not happened yet) or actual kamikaze pilots and is no worse than psychological analogies to the latter. I'm not even saying this is the intended meaning - but it works at multiple levels and even if it's relatable only to some (or just me!) I'm excited, after so many years of listening and loving this song, to have uncovered a new narrative that fits the lyrics and the music both!! :))

@[blackaliss:24860] I can't edit my comments?
The showing part makes me think it could also be frustration during sex with a partner and the woman is self stimulating to reach orgasm. But she could also fake it. This anxiety about pleasuring herself and putting on a show, which is only a concern when you have a partner, makes this a possibility. So it would be both sex and masturbation in this scenario. :)

The Knife – Na Na Na Lyrics 6 years ago
This turned from a cutesy filler I forget about but don't mind to intense and unforgettable when I heard the lyrics properly.
It's a woman who is afraid of her husband. The song draws you in with the narrative of her with a man and a dog. Quickly the settled image starts getting puzzling with the period lines. Looking back, we can tell these refer to her hoping she doesn't get pregnant with her abuser at home. When she gets her period, she's not pregnant. She's less stuck.
In real life she has mace and pepper spray and can outrun any rapist. It's at home she is defenseless and hence needs chemical castration, hope and godspeed.
Aaaaand chills every other time hear NaNaNa after realizing what she's saying...
(Sadly this is reality for so many women. Millions of child brides for one...)

The Knife – Forest Families Lyrics 6 years ago
I think this song refers to the Black Hole comics as well. Green hides redness (of scars, burns, cuts, "growths"). The forest refers to how some of the mutant teens wanted to get away from cities/crowds. And on and on. The mood and the theme fits. There are other songs on the album making a reference to Black Hole. So I think this is one of them.
This is what I thought they were referring to but I'm sure other interpretations are OK and interesting and I'd guess welcome by the band as they keep the lyrics general enough.

Fever Ray – Now's the Only Time I Know Lyrics 6 years ago
So beautiful. Not as oblique/surreal as some of her other songs, but still evokes a feeling all enveloping and very fever ray. I like the whole feel but at times, somn specific part stands out, like this today:
"Come here sparrow
Watch my hand
Black and blu,vfe seeds
That's what my hand can"
It's like that long term depression state but you're still connected by a thread. in her head/the seeds to the sparrow all black and blue, but she still has something to offer.

Frankie Goes to Hollywood – Relax Lyrics 6 years ago
@[GaySocrates:21731] Nice! It makes so much sense! (both parts but I think the latter is more likely this song's perspective than the Tantric version).

Thanks for explaining it in detail. I'm female as well. I was in a non-english speaking country when this came out and also a kid, so even the broad meaning would've been lost on me. But I do remember it played "around" (radio, cafes, restaurants etc; I was not old enough for clubs and bars) in the 80s. Perhaps it escaped the controversy/got lost in translation. :) As a teen/adult I kept hearing the song in various countries on radio, and at parties/bars/clubs but I wasn't giving much thought to it - just enjoying it and yeah, it's about sex, but vague. I didn't ever ask whats up with the laser beams?! But it actually refers to some quite specific aspects of sex that makes sense when you described with the details. :))) Thank you!

I am not engaging with this any more - you don't know who I am. I could very well be Armenian and a scholar with a Phd or a friend of someone in the band... But you call me ignorant because I don't agree with you. (More than one of the above is true by the way).

Also chill, not everyone has to agree with you. You down voted this the moment I commented, like a knee jerk. You need to accept not everyone will agree with you about everything. I was not disrespectful to you yet your only explanation for why someone might disagree is because they didn't read your comment beyond the first line. It's just a song interpretation site and I'm a stranger you don't need to take it so serious. Good night!

And I explained why. By the way not every song and video are parallel. Song can be about one thing when written and video can have a different vision/idea. See Bjork's Hunter, which many people think is about Ricardo Lopez because of its video but the song was not written about him (as explained by Bjork herself).

@[ceej1979:18825] while it's nice to explain all this, you're ALL wrong is a bit much. A lot of people commented on similar themes without knowing the specifics. Frankly Mr. Ceej1979, very few people were in that band and went through that specific experience with those specific people but there are thousands and thousands of people who still can relate to the song as they have analogous experiences and feelings.

@[Ganondox:18824] Disagree. Not genocide, this song is about Suicide - this was made clear in interview and was even the original title.Genocide and suicide are not concepts that you'd put together - martyrdom yes, but thats not what genocide is about at all. There is no choice there. Also I think to read every song of theirs (or anyone) through the lens of their ethnicity is problematic. Armenians can write about genocide, but they also don't have to do so every single time you know. It's a limiting way to look at the work of any artist.

PJ Harvey – Horses In My Dreams Lyrics 8 years ago
This song feels to me it's about heroin. Having gotten off heroin to be more precise. It kind of makes sense if you think about it. I'm not saying PJ herself was on heroin necessarily but she's surely been around it enough to write a song from this perspective. There's an honest and decisive aspect to the song, like the narrator is acknowledging the horses still pull her at some level, evoking freedom and "to set herself free". But she knows that she needs to stay clean after she managed to "pull herself clear", likely before the heroin became an all-consuming thing in her life. The music and the lyrics combined make me think this interpretation.
