Now's the Only Time I Know Lyrics
dark brown hair
and eyelash
reappear
in a flash
now's the only
time i know
early morning's
greatest deed
what's forsaken
i do not need
there is water
there is snow
settling down
door and room
keep it tidy
keep it like home
now's the only
time i know
come here sparrow
watch my hand
black and blue seeds
that's what my hand can
now's the only
time i know
do my hair
and paint eyelash
reappear
in a flash
there is more
i'd like to know
nine-fifteen
then i'm done
quiet front seat
and drive around
through the water
through the snow
and eyelash
reappear
in a flash
now's the only
time i know
greatest deed
what's forsaken
i do not need
there is snow
door and room
keep it tidy
keep it like home
now's the only
time i know
watch my hand
black and blue seeds
that's what my hand can
now's the only
time i know
and paint eyelash
reappear
in a flash
there is more
i'd like to know
then i'm done
quiet front seat
and drive around
through the snow

The song is about the monotony of home life, and morning preparation. The song refers to the fact that, espeicially in the winter, time seems to slow into nothing and the present seems to be the only thing that exists. The morning routine has become ritual, which culminates in order and peace of mind. Contentment, at least, if not happiness.
So beautiful. Not as oblique/surreal as some of her other songs, but still evokes a feeling all enveloping and very fever ray. I like the whole feel but at times, somn specific part stands out, like this today: "Come here sparrow Watch my hand Black and blu,vfe seeds That's what my hand can" It's like that long term depression state but you're still connected by a thread. in her head/the seeds to the sparrow all black and blue, but she still has something to offer.

"What's foresaken i do not need" could refer to anything - something foresaken usually referring to something that one holds dear. Although there's a sense that every moment, every detail is precious. But human beings are complex, with appetites, and she sounds very alive, like in a state of heightened awareness and anticipation of all that is and might be. eg : "There is more i'd like to know". In a flash she wants to know more... About something in particular? About what? She is alive and alert.
For me the feel of the piece is of motion, of time swiftly moving, whilst being really present and open to something.
