| Tonic – If You Could Only See Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
I always thought of this song as the typical Romeo:Juliet with friends/family diapproving of the girl... but after readings MOMENTS2C's explanation above-- wow, that really fits perfectly. (maybe not even married, just leaving one committed relationship to another). And agreed re: the grass is always greener... the euphoria only lasts a certain amount of time before reality and imperfections/friction start appearing. It may not have been what they meant when they originally wrote it, but seems to be hand:glove to me. bravo! |

Almost 7 years and still no one has answered Liz's questions, "Why can't I..." whatever whatever whatever It's a brain chemical responsible for pleasure/novelty called DOPAMINE, Liz!!! Your Dad's a doctor for crying out loud!!! |

| Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton – Carpet Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| Wow, so blunt and stark, and to the point. Sure fits with most of the lyrics. I confess to not be connected to that 'other world' out there with gutter f**** as you put it. Wow, so sordid and hopeless. Really blends with Poster of a Girl, too. Ugghh. I guess that's 'reality' in lostness... so sad :( | |
| Metric – Too Little Too Late Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| Nice. Short and to the point. It just might work... | |
| Metric – Too Little Too Late Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
There's nothing wrong with the approach of taking the words as wooden literal and see where that leads... but in this case, the interpretation becomes absurd, really. Paper fingers? and burning them in the ash tray? unless you're on acid, no way that's literal shaving your heavy head? OK, maybe, but... in (not ON) my carpeted hallway? wha? what a mess you've made with your hair clippings everywhere LOL Tie my right to the ride... unless it's the drum kit's 'ride' cymbal [stand], hmmm that might be literal, I doubt highly And he's not parading his friends into his bedroom (to watch them), or washing literal dirt off his 'mind' or 'brain' or 'head' or 'scalp' which might have literal dirt. Metric's lyrics are often multi-layered. And I'm pretty sure often drug-induced/drug-inspired and then they sort them out when not stoned or drunk or whatever. I don't think they're stoned all the time. |

| AFI – Summer Shudder Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| Very possible this was the struggle prompting these lyrics from Davey on this album; much like STS breaking from the former AFI sounds ("this art does drown") | |
| Metric – Empty Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
Sing along now, "Heee's the one, who likes, all our pretty songs, and he, likes to sing along, and he, likes to shoot his gun, and he... don't know what it means..." Feel the mockery when you're humming along LOL Shake your head it's empty LOL |

| Metric – Empty Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
from xxMeg: "Ask the line on your face what the line on your hand meant" I personally view this line as a discredit to the "art" of palmistry and other methods of fortune telling. The line is implying that the future can only be viewed by looking back on it when you're older and have actually lived through it. In other words, there is no way of knowing exactly what will happen until it has already happened. Agreed. Lines on the face, the wrinkles of experience, of reality, tell the story, not some idiotic, superstitious palm reading. Brilliant, terse, biting sarcasm. I wouldn't say the 'best lyric ever' but very, very powerful. |

| Metric – Handshakes Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
If this is about the music business, seems like a lot of groups have written about 'it', the big pull of the label to make them do whatever it is to make the label $$$, sacrificing their autonomy and creativity. "sucking on every rung" to get to the top, they sort of brought it on themselves, sold themselves out instead of going/staying indie, true to the music they want to make at that time. Have a cigar, Pink Floyd Ticks and Leeches, Tool I'm sure you can think of more than I can... |

| Sigur Rós – Untitled 8 Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| Yours is the closest transliteration of the sounds I hear as well; I would only add a long eee sound at the beginning before each 'yousighlowoal, yousigh...' like eeyousighlowoal,.. you get it. | |
| Sigur Rós – Untitled 8 Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| I believe, musically speaking, that is what this song is meant to 'be'... exactly! At least that is what I hear/feel when listening; if my spouse would only hear it the same way LOL | |
| Sigur Rós – Untitled 4 Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| The person who introduced me to Sigur Ros (she was a medical intern I taught) said she wanted this track playing at the birth of their next child! It is amazingly simple yet brilliant music. | |

(song meaning): Faith, hope, love; these three remain, but the Greatest of these is Love. I Cor 13 (commentary): Amy's voice is absolutely flawless... very sweet pop song. The secret light thing in the video reminds of the Teletubbies our kids used to watch LOL |

| Amy Millan – Skinny Boy Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
I'm back... "Skinny boy, all bones, no lies" His physical appearance matches his inner self, "no lies"; no pretending, no fluff, this relationship is what it is... "You're so miserable in the morning" Not a morning person? or Regrets the 'morning after'? I think the latter (in the final scene, he has his jacket pulled up over his head, face down/or away from her while he lies prone part undressed, and she is facing him, reaching out... "Will you wait up for me?" Where are you going so fast? Wait up! or wait up = stay up late til I get to you? I think the former. Guilt or remorse the morning after. Getting the heck out of there....until next Sunday... "It's sordid and I can't find my feet" Amy says she knows this is all wrong, but I'm going with my passion, and you sweep my off my feet, and I'm still reeling/dizzy/high from being with you ('those lips') can I get myself together to go with you? Wait up for me? "And those lips..." I guess that's the chorus for this song, so short, but so powerful. "...some love, some prostitution; some denial, some doubt, some dance..." see comments in previous post, for all the different emotions/feelings she has about this whole thing... "they're coming with knives through the back door" (back stabbing?) "and there you are on the fence" Who's it going to be? Me? Her? The scene with him literally on the fence is so innocently provocative, just so surprising...Please make up your mind... but, "with those lips..." Awww, forget it, I'll take you however I can get you, commitment or not...and we'll have 'our day together.' The last verse seems odd at first, 'drink champagne in the morning...' in the morning? alone? it is odd, the whole thing is sordid/odd/...but real... The lonely and lonesome days, until 'their day'... then the long coda... see comments above post Thanks for listening. Can I relate? I'll never tell. I'll just kill the replay button again tonight. I hope someone else will post this calendar year. HA! |

| Metric – Soft Rock Star Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
I basically agree with 'episodeiv' interpretation. I just discovered METRIC a few weeks ago and was hooked with many of the deep lyrics and Emily's contralto voice. The thing that bugs me about it is that Emily would be stereotyping female musicians that preceded her, and we know BUNCHES that did not 'sell out' to be 'soft porn' stars...Like she is having to break the mold. Or maybe it's just her demons or temptations... Another small gripe is they keep reminding us their CANADIAN and no good groups have come from Canada before so they have a strike against them or more of an uphill battle, leaving out RUSH, RUSH, RUSH (Alex, Geddy and Neal) and BTO, etc etc. C'mon Metric! You can stand on your own! And you really don't want to be 'discovered' and get 'too popular' anyways. (sic: Fantasies, esp Help, I'm alive) Great tune. Great album. I like it better than Old World by tons and Live it Out by yards. Emily's falsetto in the chorus is flawless!!! |

In my novel above, before the last paragraph, the lyrics that got deleted had to do with And above that Anyways, can't turn off this song, esp when Amy reaches with passion, "Will you wait up for me?" and shakes her head right before the bridge/guitar lead, if you can call it that. Great song. |

Wow, 34 total comments on all of Amy's songs, and 11 of them on this one. I am not drawn to country music in general, even the 'new' pop-country. I found this song, from listening to Emily Haines and Metric tunes on youtube, and it was bundled in a group, as I recognized her name from BSS (not a big fan) and Stars (OK, won't turn it off). I'm more of an alt-progressive fan, but saw Metric during the hockey game 3 weeks ago and checked them out, and got hooked by Emily's vocals. OK, Amy's voice is just flawless on this tune, and the lyrics are esoteric/odd enough to catch my interest to try and scratch deeper--what's going on? I would have never conceived all of the emotions and layers without the video. And I had to watch the video 5 times to figure out the characters...especially in the long coda (outro) that continues the tension/building. The frames move so fast. It would have been straightforward: girl falls for cute guy, period. But there's the 'fight' scene, 4 or 5 frames total, so it seems Amy's character is in a relationship already and falls for skinnyboy, who likewise is in a relationship. And the song is about them stealing away together(He already has a 'love nest' set up in the new construction). There's the one scene, so fast, near the end, when skinnyboy and a blonde are kissing in the dark and a flashlight is shone on them, and then Amy's character recoils in horror, discovering the legit lovers in each other's arms ? near the love nest ? and on Sunday, their day to have their fling. "Hey I thought this was 'our' place!" I had to watch that coda 5 or 6 times to try and figure out what was going on. Anyone else have ideas? The figures in the fight scene are so far away it's hard to tell who is who. Thanks for reading my long post, I hope someone else will come along... |

| Metric – Collect Call Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
The metaphor of a collect call is brilliant. Do Gen Y'ers even know what that is? LOL (one of the posts above explains it) and depending upon which side of collect call you're on-- it's a great relief when your the caller and the receiver accepts the charges; and PITA on the receiving end, *unless* the fire's still there in the relationship. When the fire's out...'oh great, a collect call, more COSTs from me on this one.' Many of the posts above summed together express what's going on the dying/dead relationship that continues to go through the motion, soulless. I think the lyrics in the bridge are: "... you gotta make THE move" (not 'them' move) What is 'the move'? See Emily's Crowd Surf off a Cliff: "...the ending outlasting the move." |

| Peter Gabriel – Intruder Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| Always made me wonder about PG... why he would write this kind of song...influenced by Poe, etc and just putting the horror topic to music (which he has done successfully), or revealing a dark side of himself... | |
| Peter Gabriel – I Have The Touch Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
PG's confession that he has the need for human touch. Nothing more. (like everyone else). But some of us feel more loved/needs met with physical touch, crave it, feel starved without it, apparently PG is one of those... and others have needs met with receiving gifts, words of encouragement, quality time, acts of service, etc. All of us like all, but some crave touch/closeness like a drug. I saw PG during the So tour at Merriwether Post Pavilion, and think during this song he would fall into the audience and get passed around... |

| Tool – 10,000 Days (Wings Pt. 2) Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
What I hear is Maynard deifying his dear mother. He has gone way past honoring her, cherishing her. He has elevated her to Deity status where the fellow believers follow her Light (Come now, she is only true believer in the church and Everyone else is a hypocrite? or just Hyperbole?), the Trinity beckons to her command (‘fetch’-- when I hear that, it's like fingernails on a chalkboard) and the Trinity waits her ascension to see what their pillar of faith is and she demand, “Give me…”. Of course, the wings part is some sort of unbiblical fiction; the angels have wings, someone made up a story about people 'getting them.' All I can say if Judith Marie had true, saving faith in her walk with Christ, she would absolutely shudder at these words/suggestions more than APC’s ‘Judith’ profanities. And though she apparently loved her son unconditionally, up against the wall, would not agree in spirit with these lyrics, no matter how well-intentioned. Believers long to see the Savior, and to fall in an everlasting embrace and service, falling at His feet; not a demanding "GIVE ME..." So tragic, Maynard’s gifts: voice of an angel, lyrical genius/ poetic talent being used to glorify himself and his mother, both creatures, instead of the triune God who gifted him. Thus, the lyrics /vox bemoan the tormented soul of unbelief, vexed at the problem of pain and suffering and hypocrisy. (if evolution is true, then it is all meaningless, and suffering just is neutral, chemical reactions in someone’s gray matter, nothing more). |

| Tool – The Pot Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
This song is clearly about hypocrisy, for example the references: The pot calling the kettle black People in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones F_____ hypocrites (couldn’t get any more obvious than that) Reference to said hypocrite urinating on those whom he criticizes while urinating in his own eye (symbolic of his supposed clear vision of the subject, some hear ‘high eye’ as well even more hypocritical) The subject of hypocrisy appears to be about legalization of drugs esp. marijuana, but perhaps symbolic, the opium of the people. Ex: the Pot (common name for marijuana), ‘you must have been…high’ Ironic, no? MJK says. I hear people use the term hypocrite in at least two senses: 1. Someone who doesn’t live up to their professed standards 100% of the time 2. Someone pretending to be something they are not, esp in regards to morals/ ethics In the case of 1., is any one willing to say that they are PERFECT? If Maynard is using the term as 1. then he is also a hypocrite, imperfect like the rest of us. And when fellow hypocrites CALL OUT fellow hypocrites (our ‘scarlet lettermen’) for being hypocritical, then they are DOUBLE hypocrites. And worthy of being dismissed. Or, he is saying he is PERFECT. Call for the straight jacket. Or more dope. In the case of 2. the song would have to be referring to someone who is smoking pot/continuing to use, at the same time, working and preaching against its legalization. If so, then it’s time to start naming names, not just broad-sweeping generalizations that amount to windmill-jousting and straw-man beating. I have never used and am sure there are others likewise. If Maynard is attacking those who oppose marijuana legalization, yet who have not used, or not currently using the drug, how can he call them a ‘hypocrite’ in the sense of meaning 2? He cannot. It is merely name-calling and scores 0 (zero) in the debate. If he reverts to meaning 1., he is a double hypocrite, again worthy of dismissing. To conclude, Maynard presupposes Christianity when he evokes ‘hypocrite’ accusation, all the while denying Christianity. In an evolutionary worldview, there is no way to account for the concept ‘hypocrite’ on its own mechanisms. It is parasitic by necessity. I am a biology major, please outline the process for me from the beginning, macro or micro level. Ages ago, when Tool toured preaching, “Question Authority!”, why didn’t someone get in their face and ask, “Says who? Who are YOU to tell ME what to do, what to question?! You are putting yourself in a position of AUTHORITY when you tell me to do that, you [expletive] hypocrite.” (Hypocrisy in the Christian church is indeed a problem, but beyond the discussion of this song. If I explained it to you, you most likely would want to deny the reality of the problem, for admitting it, would be more than you would accept.) It is a crying shame, such talented musicians, giving glory to themselves instead of the triune God who gave them such gifts. |

| Tool – Right in Two Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
Remember way back?.....life feeds on life...this is necessary... life feeds on life...this is necessary... Maynard wants it both ways. He wants to deny Christ but preach His peace, love, why can't we all just get along message. If 'evolution' is true, then no surprise monkeys killing monkeys killing...the 'fittest' survive to reproduce, kill whatever gets in your way, just like the animal kingdom does, preying on the weakest. No right or wrong, good or evil. Life feeds on life... this is necessary... Maynard has been given artistic brilliance & voice of an angel-- gifts from God-- but soul of anti-Christ, tormented, spits in His face again and again via many lyrics. I don't see honest seeking but mocking rebellion. Not beyond prayer though. His mother never stopped loving him, but I seriously doubt she would be proud of her son's lyrics. |

| Just a softer form of Gnosticism (spirit-body separation) which has infected Eastern and Western thought for centuries. | |
| Sigur Rós – Hún Jörð Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Some of the best music (including the vox) I've heard in a while-- just discovered this week,10 years after it was released. My conscience just died though as a Christian, reading his idolatrous coup of the Lord's Prayer.... so sad. | |
| Sigur Rós – Glósóli Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Surprisingly my least favorite , seems a bit 'poppish' or commercial feel, like Abba. but no one can like everything, right? | |
| Sigur Rós – Untitled 8 Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I agree with the sexual metaphor (musical orgasm) as others have commented, with this and much of the band's music. My favorite on this CD, and prob overall. Followed by 4, then 1, then down from there. | |
| Over the Rhine – All I Need Is Everything Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| WHAT? First comment?! This is a mesmerizing tune, introduced to me by an e-friend from Finland ( I live in the US, thanks Sir Sisu). gripping voice she has. | |
| Tool – Vicarious Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Evolutionism/naturalism worldview is assumed by MJK, but can't explain this alleged craving for tragedy he writes of, let alone any 'problem' with such behavior. Honestly, I personally can't make the confession he demands ALL OF US to make "Why don't we just admit it" ! Now, the Christian worldview provides the root cause of this behavior and that is indeed a problem. MJK needs to take his own advice and CHOOOOOSE TOOOOO, LET GO of his grudge against Christ. | |
| Tool – The Grudge Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| MJK is describing his Grudge against Christianity and his childhood observations ? abuse under a hypocritical despot, pretending to be Christian, ...negativity, intolerant, desperate to control, etc etc Read his lyrics elsewhere and his April fool's joke this year. So when you reject ultimate Truth, you fall for Jung, astrology, or some other religion/philosophy. Everyone has a religion-- we must, it's like breathing-- most make up their own fantasy intheir brain, all the while presupposing the truths of Chrisitianity. It is a man-exalting religion to set yourself up on stage and scream to everyone, 'find your own religion'. It surely isn't scientific. "Question Authority". SAYS WHO!!, who are YOU to tell me to Question Authority, what kind of authority do you think YOU are, MJK/Timothy Leary telling people that nonsense? Hypocrites. Repent or perish, for goodness' sake. Use you God-given talents in music and imagery/poetry to His glory and not your own self exaltation. Then you can really, 'let go.' and find true forgiveness. | |
| Peter Gabriel – Here Comes The Flood Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Ditto Rfeynman | |
| Peter Gabriel – San Jacinto Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Such picturesque lyrics and a big sound/music really matches the lyric. Native American struggles and culture of course. Big name artists get involved politically quite a bit and Gabriel is no exception here. | |
| Peter Gabriel – In Your Eyes Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Gabriel does write metaphorically about God in his music--but I thought this was directed to the African man he sings with on the original version--that he covets the 'light and heat' he sees in his more 'spiritual' African friend, rather than the cold Christian facade that his homeland has become. So, I see it as a typical pendulum from dead Christianity, past the real live Church still existing, to the view of more 'primitive' societies being most pure and desirable. | |

| King Crimson – Neal And Jack And Me Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Another Autobiography of life on the road as a famous musician, tough life, no doubt. I must be too homophobic to take the last line literally, esp any of the 'boys in the band' at this time: Fripp, Levin, Belew, Bruford. | |
| King Crimson – Matte Kudasai Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Love those seagulls by Adrian! Yes, beautiful chord sequences. | |
| King Crimson – 21st Century Schizoid Man Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
Schizoid personality disorder types are true loners. Paranoia eventually consumes them, they never go out. Even common folk are becoming like that--all to themselves, computers, TVs, etc. less social overall, unless a hurricane or disaster hits and forces us out. Yes, the last line is the least metaphorical--, sort of HITS YOU in the FACE, compared to the others that us left brainers have to strain at to understand. |
|
| Nickelback – Because Of You Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| Yes, look up Borderline Personality Disorder and it fits pretty well, girls who can't maintain relationships, love/hate, slash their wrists, labile, labile, labile. Like a tornado path with relationships. They can be good-looking and suck you right in their vortex...sorry, Chad. | |

Schizophrenic? nah. Gay perspective? don't think so. Abusive relationship? Yep. Parent:child or girlfriend: boyfriend, probably the latter, but the abused [only] child/abusive father perspective per Juggy is the way I 've always heard it, too. |
