OK Go – It's Tough To Have A Crush When The Boy Doesn't Feel The Same Way You Do Lyrics 17 years ago
what difference does it make if they're gay? i don't get it. and why would it be offensive if they were? they certainly wouldn't be the first in music history. wtf?

Dinosaur Jr. – Goin' Home Lyrics 17 years ago
reminds me of my last "relationship". you can tell that person all you like that they have a place in your heart, but if they're not there when they should, you have to move on. go home. move on.

The Damnwells – sleepsinging Lyrics 17 years ago
to me it's about a dying relationship. everything is burning up, and you have to decide if you should just go and save yourself, or save something out of sentiment, or foolishness to try and make it work.
he's knows that it's going nowhere, that neither one will ever change. and he feels stupid for putting faith in such a fragile environment. but he's awake now.

Beth Orton – Comfort of Strangers Lyrics 18 years ago
i think it's about looking for meaning in many different places, but you're not satisfied, you can't find the truth. the people you think hold the answers won't be straight with you, so you settle with the more superficial situations, people you don't know are lying to you.

Fiona Apple – Window Lyrics 18 years ago
To me, it seems to be about illusions, or the loss of illusion. In the beginning, the line about 'as he went on and on, it wasn't the outside world I could see' seems to mean that the person is trying to convince her of something, influence her vision. Something is blocking her clear perception of the world or situation. She breaks the window to see the truth.

The Jesus and Mary Chain – April Skies Lyrics 18 years ago
this song pretty much sums up my last relationship. he kept trying to assure me that he was okay with my late night phone calls, that he was okay with my feeling that i needed him, but i could never trust him/"sacrifice myself to you". he was still messing around with girls. so i walked off. now we're trying to be friends, and i still want to feel insecure sometimes.
It all started in April.

Aimee Mann – Guys Like Me Lyrics 19 years ago
To me this song is about those really charming, seemingly great guys who lead you to believe that you can form some kind of relationship with them. In fact, they are completly unavailable emotionally - the line "we pull you close but never really/ looking warm but feeling chilly..."

Jonatha Brooke – Nothing Sacred Lyrics 19 years ago
It seems like this is about a relationship with someone you can't trust. You confront them with their lies, and basically say that you're leaving them and that they will have to face the truth of themselves on their own.

Aimee Mann – You're With Stupid Now Lyrics 19 years ago
My interpretation is that this person is infatuated with someone who does them no good, and is fact, not a good guy. Everyone knows this, and the girl is aware of his poor character, but she doesn't want to admit it. She thinks she can just "go with the flow", expecting nothing and that she won't get hurt.
Maybe that's just me, though.

Elliott Smith – Roman Candle Lyrics 19 years ago
"He played himself
He didn't need me to give him hell
He could be cool and cruel to you and me
Knew we'd put up with anything..."

Those lines make me think of my father. People like this will make you believe that the abuse is just an act they put on, that it's not a part of their actual person. It's a trick to make you think you spurred it on, created their violence.

Sarah Harmer – You Were Here Lyrics 19 years ago
I listened to this song a lot around the time my grandfather died. The lines, 'i can just see you show me your garden
i thought you'd grow roses and grapes on low vines
i wanted to know you when we were both older
i thought there'd be more of those wonderful times
i can lie to myself
and say i like it
but i would love it if you were here
i'm just sad for myself
cause i know you're clear
but i would love it if you were here,' meant a lot to me that I can't really describe.
It obviously is about missing someone, but perhaps knowing that they are better off where they are.

The Dandy Warhols – Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth Lyrics 19 years ago
I say this documentary a couple months ago which was basically followed The Dandy Warhols and this other band, The Brian Jamestown Massacre as they were kind of starting out. The Dandys and the guys from Brian Jamestown came from the same area, really admired each other, and were good friends, especially Courtney and the Jamestown lead singer. They fell apart as the Dandys became more mainstream, and the Jamestown members fought with each other and became addicts.
This song is probably the relationship falling apart.

Bob Dylan – A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall Lyrics 19 years ago
This is one of those songs that turn out to be timeless. If we keep on the path we're on, our children and grandchildren will probably wonder if Bob Dylan was psychic, how he knew.
To me, it seems like he's talking about how we succeed so brillantly in ignoring the suffering, in our own country or others. To me the line, 'I heard ten thousand whisperin' and nobody listenin'' isn't about praying to God, but these people calling out for compassion from their fellow human beings and noone wants to hear them.

Elliott Smith – Somebody That I Used to Know Lyrics 19 years ago
During the time I was 'divorcing' myself from my best friend, I heard this song for the first time. She randomly came back after running around for months, crazy on alcohol and what-not, and made the old familiar claims of sobriety.
I was friends with her all though the insanity. As she became sober, she pushed me away. "You don't need my help anymore/It's all now to you, there ain't no before."
I love all of Elliott Smith's songs, though they break my heart. But with this one, I sometimes think I understand a little more than before what it may have been like for him.

Alice in Chains – Don't Follow Lyrics 19 years ago
I think it's about acceptance. He knows he can't go back and change what he's done, who he is. As terrible and sad and painful as it is, Layne probably knew that his path would destroy him, and maybe thought he could warn others not to follow. Or that he could live on in this song, with the pain clear in his voice.

The Libertines – Can't Stand Me Now Lyrics 19 years ago
The 'If you wanna try' verse seems so pleading to me. Who hasn't been addiction's bitch or had a friend in that situation?

Pearl Jam – Rearviewmirror Lyrics 19 years ago
I always related to this song in a way, being raised in an abusive home. 'I guess it was the beatings that made me wise/But I'm not about to give thanks or apologize'.
From my experience, the abuser usually tries to tell you that they did this out of love, that they didn't mean to hurt you, it was your own fault, etc.
As you grow older, you abuser wants to make peace with the past, they want you to help them excuse their past behavior by pointing out your character or whatever, and saying, 'See, I didn't fuck you up too bad. I made you strong. I made you who you are.'
You just have to get away from it all together.

John Lennon – Jealous Guy Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't know what was going on or what John Lennon was thinking about when he wrote this song.
I just remember that it came on the radio shortly after we found out my grandfather had died last year. My mother, who'd been able to keep it together for a few hours, started sobbing hysterically.
It's a beautiful song and it breaks my heart.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Breaking the Girl Lyrics 19 years ago
I read Anthony's biography, Scar Tissue, a couple weeks ago. He did lose his virginity at an early age, like twelve or thirteen, to his one of his father's young girlfriends. He wasn't forced to do it -- his father had been raised in a very religious, restricted home and had his first time with a prostitute, so he didn't want Anthony to go through anything similiar. Anthony told his father he liked the girl, and wanted to have sex with her, and it happened.
I don't think this song is about that specific event. He mentioned that when he wrote this song, he was just thinking about past patterns and the girls he may have hurt, partly due to his father's example.

Ben Kweller – Make It Up Lyrics 21 years ago
A couple months ago I bought Sha-Sha for a cheap price with low expectations, considering all the hype. As soon as I started listening to it, I thought he was just awesome. Make It Up is one of my favorite songs, as it reminds me of one too many of my past relationships.

Cat Stevens – Moonshadow Lyrics 21 years ago
It's to me about knowing someone has faith in you. That faith follows you through life and gets you through the tough times when you don't think you'll make it.

This song represents to me my relationship with my mother, as fucked up as that seems.

Joni Mitchell – River Lyrics 21 years ago
This song always makes me teary. To me, it's about expectations in a way. You're supposed to be happy, but you're just going through the motions. Maybe you're in a relationship that seems good, but just on paper. Everyone's celebrating something you can't feel. The line, 'But it don't snow here/ It stays pretty green' to me means there's nothing to celebrate from your point of view. It's hard to imagine Christmas without snow.

Eels – Going to Your Funeral Part I Lyrics 21 years ago
Most of this album makes me teary, but one of the parts that really breaks my heart is when he says, 'Honolulu hurricane/I knew that you were not insane'. That part seems to be for his sister.

Elliott Smith – Everybody Cares, Everybody Understands Lyrics 21 years ago
From what I read in an interview, this song deals with Smith's time in a mental facility. Apparently the place was run by horrible people he's quoted as saying he wants to sue.

The White Stripes – Girl, You Have No Faith in Medicine Lyrics 21 years ago
This song to me is pretty obviously about the placebo effect. Sometimes the ability to get better, to be well, is in your mind, but you think you need something to help the process. It's all in this girl to be well, and while she's refusing to take her 'medicine' and being miserable, the answer's right there.

Poe – If You Were Here Lyrics 21 years ago
Monday I found out my grandfather was dying. I've listened to this song at least a dozen times since. My grandfather was the sweetest, kindest man, and the line, 'Cause I hear your strange music/gentle and true/ singing inside me with the best parts of you,' always gets me.

U2 – Staring At The Sun Lyrics 21 years ago
To me, this song is about our culture ignoring the problems around us. There can be something fundamentally wrong in our lives, but we'd rather pretend than admit anything.
