to me it's about a dying relationship. everything is burning up, and you have to decide if you should just go and save yourself, or save something out of sentiment, or foolishness to try and make it work. he's knows that it's going nowhere, that neither one will ever change. and he feels stupid for putting faith in such a fragile environment. but he's awake now.
