Guys Like Me Lyrics
Guys like me
We don't know how it feels
Absentee even closing the deal
But every player there's a payoff in the final reel
But never with guys like me
Cause guys like me
We look good at the gate
But you'll agree with the odds on the slate
and put your money on a bonafide heavyweight
and take it off guys like me
take it off guys like me
We pull you close but never really
looking warm but feeling chilly
you'll describe us as impassioned
when it's just a front we've fashioned
Cause guys like me
We all vow to become
clear and free of the fife and the drum
and block the circulation til we're all completely numb
let's hear it for guys like me
let's hear it for guys like me
let's hear it for guys, guys like me
We don't know how it feels
Absentee even closing the deal
But every player there's a payoff in the final reel
But never with guys like me
We look good at the gate
But you'll agree with the odds on the slate
and put your money on a bonafide heavyweight
and take it off guys like me
take it off guys like me
looking warm but feeling chilly
you'll describe us as impassioned
when it's just a front we've fashioned
We all vow to become
clear and free of the fife and the drum
and block the circulation til we're all completely numb
let's hear it for guys like me
let's hear it for guys like me
let's hear it for guys, guys like me

I think this song describes people who are emotionally reserved and are intent on being completely individual, forgetting about the importance of humane impassion. They become lonely and isolated because of this.
To me this song is about those really charming, seemingly great guys who lead you to believe that you can form some kind of relationship with them. In fact, they are completly unavailable emotionally - the line "we pull you close but never really/ looking warm but feeling chilly..."
my ex. it's my ex. absentee even closing the deal.
apparently aimee and i go for the same type.
I think it's about record labels only supporting the sure-fire-hit bands and never 'putting it on guys like me'. I think a lot of this album has undertones about her relationship with her record label
I think this one is about being attracted to men who exude macho, but are emotional infants. Sort of falling for the strong silent type. The problem is these guys lure women in, but have no real substance to their personality. They do not express emotions or deal with conflict in mature ways. Frankly, they do not have to since the pool of women drawn to them seems inexhaustable. The kind of guy who is cool in high school is not the guy who will remain faithfull and help raise kids later in life. Aimee does a very wonderful job of lyrically illustrating this simple point. She is a wonderful writer.
You know, I'm not quite sure why, but I always saw this song as from the point of view of someone who was the sort of "shy guy" that found someone who thought that they could make them a better person so to speak, their "savior."
