for me this song is about one-night stands or having friends with benefits when we're in love with someone else. and how we look for the "comfort of strangers" when we're feeling lonely and missing an impossible love.
the comfort of strangers instead of the comfort of the one we really love... how it's better not to be in love than to be messing with someone that we love but is wrong for us ('wrong stuff'). one night stands = the comfort of strangers.
been there, done that, it can hurt a lot to be with someone but thinking about someone else :/ and this song always reminds me of that.
i think it's about looking for meaning in many different places, but you're not satisfied, you can't find the truth. the people you think hold the answers won't be straight with you, so you settle with the more superficial situations, people you don't know are lying to you.
