| Pulp – Party Hard Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
Does anyone else feel the lyrics could be about something deeper than being bored of partying? I reckon it could be about unrequited love. He loves a woman, she used to love him but nothing happened because all of a sudden she moved onto someone else. It uses the backdrop of a party to symbolise the mundane ritual of love. "Entertainment can sometimes be hard when the thing that you love is the same thing that's holding you down" He loves her but she is clearly holding him back from finding someone else because he's so fixated on her. "This man is dangerous, he just shed his load on your best party frock" The other guy has shown his intent, he is "dangerous" whilst the narrator is boring. "I was having a whale of a time until your uncle Psychosis arrived." He was happy until she decided she liked someone else. There was just no logic behind her actions. "I'm here whenever you need me & whenever you need me I won't be here." He still wants her, but at the same time, he should sack her off considering how she's treated him. He's in two minds. "If you didn't come to party then why did you come here?" If she doesn't love him any more what was the point of even trying with him? Why waste all that time just to decide that he's not worthy of her? "When the party's over will you come home with me?" When she breaks up with the other guy, could there still be a chance of him and her getting together? It's probably because I'm going through something similar at the minute and I've been listening to This Is Hardcore a lot recently, but when I listened to the lyrics something just clicked. |

| The Stone Roses – Fools Gold Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| Stop Whispering off their debut album Pablo Honey sounds very suspicious in regard to their alleged Roses influence! | |
| The Smiths – How Soon Is Now? Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| I've always seen this song about unrequited love. The line about going to the club is particularly striking, because it's as if he's saying that the person is miserable for not finding someone whilst out clubbing, and they wouldn't be in this state of unhappiness had they loved the narrator back. | |
| Radiohead – Paranoid Android Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
This is one of those great songs that have 1000s of interpretations linked to them because the lyrics are so ambiguous. They could mean anything. I have a few theories and one of them is about someone being driven insane from what they think is unrequited love. The title stems from the paranoia that the one they love hates them, and feels that they have no personality, like a robot. An android. This person loves the other so much and it hurts them that they feel they are not loved back. It follows the person falling out of love and the feelings of bitterness which surrounds it, ranging from uncomfortability to a nervous breakdown to acceptance. "Please could you stop the noise, I'm trying to get some rest From all the unborn chicken voices in my head" It's almost like the person hates to see the one they love having fun in front of them, enjoying themselves with other people. It makes them jealous and insecure. They want to relax, not have to put up with these negative feelings. Birth is associated with love, and the unborn chicken voices part relates to the thought of being with the one they love, as it makes them feel worse just thinking about the impossibility of a relationship. "What's that, what's that?" This is talking about the mioxed feelings in regards to the situation. Should they resent the person for making them feel this way, or should they keep on obsessing over them. They're unsure what to do. "When I am king you will be first against the wall With your opinion which is of no consequence at all" The word "king" represents happiness. It shines a ray of optimistic light on the situation, that eventually they will have moved on. When their life is sorted out, and when the object of affection is a distant memory, they will feel nothing but pity for them. They will no longer matter to the protagonist because it was their loss, and the protagonist is in a better place. Almost as if they're saying "fuck you, I'm going to be happy however you make me feel" "Ambition makes you look pretty ugly Kicking, squealing, Gucci little piggy" The object of affection's happiness, desire and ambition makes the protagonist feel uncomfortable because they know that the other person are showing signs of happiness without them. They bitterly say that they look ugly as a sort of way of dealing with the thing. No matter how happy they will be in their materialistic lives, they will still be a pathetic person. "You don't remember, you don't remember Why don't you remember my name? Off with his head, man, off with his head, man Why don't you remember my name? I guess he does" Now here the narrator is finally bursting into a fit of anger that the person doesn't love them. They've been hiding this behind a wall of faux indifference in the past few verses. They've almost accepted the belief that the object of affection hates them, and is mocking their resentment when Thom sings "off with his head, man, off with his head". The protagonist at this point is so wrapped up by insecurity that he feels the other person doesn't know who they are, or has forgotten them. "I guess he does" = At least other people know who the narrator is. A sort of "I don't care, other people have time form ,e what makes you so important?" "Rain down, rain down, come on rain down on me From a great height, from a great height, height Rain down, rain down, come on rain down on me From a great height, from a great height, height" Acceptance that the person doesn't love them, and the narrator is carrying a nothing-to-lose attitude. "Rain down on me, it couldn't be worse than it already is, I've hit rock bottom, so fuck it" "That's it sir, you're leaving The crackle of pig skin The dust and the screaming The yuppies networking The panic, the vomit The panic, the vomit God loves his children God loves his children, yeah" The narrator is leaving this state of mind. They are no longer putting up with blurred vision on the world due to one person, and the negative feelings they have had inflicted on them. They feel that they are better than the object of desire, a smug attitude carried by "yuppies". They're done worrying and feeling nervous about the whole situation, and they're saying "thank God that's over". Not saying this is the official meaning of the song, it probably isn't, but I think generally speaking Paranoid Android does a fantastic job of tapping into the insecurities of the human psyche. Whatever the causes are, it's up to the listener I suppose. |

| The Smiths – The Queen Is Dead Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I always saw this song as a general social commentary on modern Britain. It uses imagery of typically British things such as the royal family, pubs and the Daily Mail. It has a feel of "broken Britain" about it, this is most obvious in the line "Oh has the world changed, or have I changed?" - Morrissey grew up with old fashioned values and in recent times those values have been compromised. Morrissey is anti-Monarchist, and I think this contributes to Morrissey's attack on modern Britain - the line about Charles appearing on the front of the Daily Mail - two things that are wrong with Britain in Morrissey's eyes. It's a very sarcastic, dry humoured line. The line about Morrissey playing piano...not sure what that might mean but I get the feeling he's trying to say "well, it could be worse". The Queen think he isn't a good singer - things are bleak - but if you think that's bad, then look at it this way - at least he's not playing piano. "Life is very long when you're lonely" - Probably a reference to how Morrissey feels alone in his views, he's looking from the outside in and it's taking a strain on him. Anyway, a great song. Hypnotic rhythms, again some great guitar work from Marr and some fantastic stream-of-consciousness lyrics from Moz. |

| The Strokes – Heart In A Cage Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
I've always interpreted this song as being hopelessly in love with someone, touching on unrequited love. "The heart beats it's a cage" - That feeling where you're head over heels in love with someone but they don't seem to love you back so your "beating heart" feels restricted, as if it's "in a cage". The best line though: "I went to the concert and I Fought through the crowd Guess I got too excited when I Thought you were around" Just sums up how desperate things can be when love is a one-way street. |

| Blur – The Universal Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Does anyone else think this is about 1984? "Every night we're gone And to karaoke songs How we like to sing a long Although the words are wrong" The Ministry of Truth composed propaganda songs. They were blatantly made to avoid treason but the citizens of Oceania liked the Music anyway. "No one here is alone, satellites in every home" A reference to Telescreens. "Big Brother is watching you." "Every paper that you read Says tomorrow is your lucky day" Again, propaganda from the Ministry of Truth. How feeling hate is illegal in Oceania and eveyone needs to be happy. Everyone is told that Big Brother is the best person alive. |

| Manic Street Preachers – Faster Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
This song is one of the most songs the Manics have done. My interpretation of it is Richey saying to the rest of the world "Fuck you, it's MY life, I'll live it how I please, you have no say in it" and I think everyone's been in a situation bfore where they've been put down for doing their own thing. Conformity is also a strong theme in this song and it gives out a message: 'Be yourself'. "I know I believe in nothing but it is my nothing" is Richey saying that, yes, he is a depressing person but that's just who he is and nothing will change that. "Life is for the cold made warm and they are just lizards" is about how some people are only happy when they "fit in" or change who they are. The last line speaks of how easy it is to follow the crowd but you will never be truly happy if you do. My two cents anyway. |

| Hawthorne Heights – Ohio Is for Lovers Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| And it's ironic that you bitch at me for not posting derogatory comments about Hawthorne Shites when you even clearly stated that you don't like them. | |
| Hawthorne Heights – Ohio Is for Lovers Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Yeah, I'm a sheep because I don't like major bands. Ever heard of the Beatles? Biggest band of all time? Yep, I like them. But you may not because their lyrics don't just consist of screaming and whining about some girl who they went out with for a week and then cutting their wrists. Now cheer up, Emo kid. |
|
| Hawthorne Heights – Ohio Is for Lovers Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| This song is about trying to be hardcore by wearing make-up and cutting your wrists. I'm sure all you Emos who are saying "OMG DIZ SOGN IZ TOTALLY EMSHIONAL D00D!!!!!1111111!!11" can relate to this. Stupid fucking sheep. | |

"hiphop is da shiz u guys are gay rokc fagz and i bet u are gay with eachother go listen to real beats like bep or the pussycat dolls" OK, let's end our argument and team up against this moron. Truce? |

| The Clash – Death or Glory Lyrics | 20 years ago |

| Arctic Monkeys – I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
Yeah, without The Strokes and The White Stripes there'd pretty much only be Nu-Metal and Pop Punk running the airwaves. So I think TS and TWS are more legitamite saviours of Rock than AM. AM just sound like a Strokes rip-off anyway. And if you don't care about what I have to say, then why type a fucking essay ranting at me? Ntwjones, at least Oasis aren't bland. |
|
| Arctic Monkeys – Knock a Door Run Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
Wow, man! Arctic Monkeys are sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo gonna change Rock history dude! I know that for a face because NME says so! Wow, man! Their music isn't stupid, done 10000000x bog stansard Indie bullshit, it's deeeeep, man! "We're wakin' up those sleepers, You know we're so mischievous". Such deeeeep lyrics., The guy's a modern poet! If you think this band should sing about anything other than getting pissed and eyeingo ut women, and that's including serious stuff, YOU'RE A MORON! Now, let me smoke this joint so I can help my cool reputation. |

| Arctic Monkeys – A Certain Romance Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
Urgh, I'm beginning to hate NME Indie scenesters as much as I hate Chavs and Emos. Wait. Scrap that. ALL scenes are shit. DO SOMETHING THAT *YOU* ENJOY AND NOT WHAT PEOPLE SAY I IS "COOL"! Yes, I just told some Indie scenesters not to be like sheep. I expect a barrage of insults now... |
|
| Arctic Monkeys – Space Invaders Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
You would say thety rock. I bet that if NME kissed 50 Cent's arse you'd all be at the front for his concert. I hate sheep and Indie scenester. But I just repeated myself when I said "Indie scenesters". |
|
| Arctic Monkeys – Perhaps Vampires Is a Bit Strong But... Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Yeah, but all you Indie scene kids are part of the whole "build 'em up, bring 'em down" mentality. | |
| Arctic Monkeys – I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
Oh, and SonicDM, you're a moron if you think The Clash weren't political. But then again, you "believe the hype" so I think enough has been said about your knowledge of music. Cloudgazer, you're the fucking moron here mate. Bands singing about politics et al are usually very intelligen, and if a good band sings about serious issues instead of the stupid things AM sing about, then they're educating thousands. I bet you're one of those people who don't give a shit about anything except getting pissed and stoned. I can tell by your grammar. And so the fuck what if politics may be all over the Music Channels? The Arctic Monkeys are all over the News, when they should be on the Music Channels (Using your logic). Now, go and bottle the bands off at a political concert. Since you feel that way about intelligent music. |
|
| Arctic Monkeys – I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
I can see the NME fanboys are in a mood because they've realised there are other bands besides what NME says is good. I'll list some bands that aren't this overhyped Indie shit, that you can listen to before it's too late: Dinosaur Jr The Smiths Smashing Pumpkins Super Furry Animals Foo Fighters Queens Of The Stone Age Eagles Of Death Metal The Strokes Radiohead The White Stripes The Darkness Primus Weezer Some of the above you might consider to be overrated but at least they aren't bland, generic Indie who, just because NME calls them the "saviours of Rock", much like every band they rave about, then they are. Don't believe the hype. Though some of you scenesters have already fallen victim. |
|
| Arctic Monkeys – I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| OK, then maybe you can tell me what's so great about this average, forgotten-in-a-year, indie band. | |
| Arctic Monkeys – I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
OMG ARTC MONKIEZ R TEH PWN WTFLOLBBQ!!!111!!1!shift+one!11 Seriously. I bet you people are teenagers who blow their money on NME every week. I bet you also loved Kaiser Chiefs, The Killers, Razorlight and Franz Ferdinand beforehand, until NME moved onto a new Indie band to arselick. Face it, childerent, ARTIC MONKEYS ARE AVERAGE, AT BEST. Some good Indie bands include Amusement Parks On Fire, Cherubs and The Rakes, but of course, because they're not fully worshipped by NME you probably feel they're boring. And whoever called them the voice of this generation, I bet they look good when they put the crack down, because singing about some girl doesn't really qualify. If they sung about real world issues, like war, fascism and bullying, then I might believe them. But they don't. And next month, buy Q instead. It'll save your life, believe me. |
|
| The Futureheads – Area Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I think it's about a girl who leaves her broken home, and ends up getting raped. She then decides to arm herself incase it happens again. Pretty clever metaphors. | |
| My Chemical Romance – I'm Not Okay (I Promise) Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
Because Emo's seem to think it makes them look cool and soulful, when, in actuality, it makes them look like ponces. Emos: The second worst thing to Chavs. |
|
| My Chemical Romance – Helena Lyrics | 20 years ago |

"FUCK INDIE!!!!!!!!" FUCK YOU!!!!!!!! |
|
| Masters Of Reality – Domino Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Kickass song about being alienated by a bunch of "perfect" people. | |
| My Chemical Romance – I'm Not Okay (I Promise) Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Cutting youself makes you and the rest of your "non-conformist, anti-trendy" social group look an idiot. What's the point in it? | |
| My Chemical Romance – I'm Not Okay (I Promise) Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Yeah! Get revenge on people by cutting your wrists! Great plan to fight the power! | |
| My Chemical Romance – Helena Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Well my mate has MCR's and one time when I was at his house we listened to it and I didn't like it. | |
| My Chemical Romance – Helena Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| And xXbUlLeTsXx, some Hip-Hop is good. Roots Manuva, Kanye West, The Streets, Public Enemy. But I'm more of a fan of Indie/Alternative. Though you could say Emo is to Rock what Gangsta Rap is to Hip-Hop. Both uter shite, drawing fans who are complete wannabes and giving the superior genre a bad name. | |
| My Chemical Romance – Helena Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Isn't it ironic how bands with kickass music like Masters of Reality and Super Furry Animals barely have any comments, yet shite emo bands like MCR have hundreds for each songs all filled with comments like "great song reminds me of a distant person like myself or how everything else in life seems to relate to everything and nothing at the same time and nobody ever knows what to do in life". What the hell are you talking about, mate? You're seem to be posting some nonesense to make it look like you're "with" the lyrics. | |
| My Chemical Romance – I'm Not Okay (I Promise) Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| This pathetic excuse for a song is about MCR's music...it's not okay, it's BOLLOCKS! I bet you emo kids are now gonna cut yourselves or respond with "STFU LOLOLL!!11one!11". If you want some good music with meaningful lyrics that aren't about cutting your wrists over some slut, then listen to Smashing Pumpkins, QOTSA, Monster Magnet, Maximo Park, Stone temple Pilots and Super Furry Animals. But then again, some of those bands aren't trendy, so you'll probably dislike them and cut your wrists over hearing them, much like you over anything else. | |
| Queens of the Stone Age – How To Handle A Rope Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
Quite a few emos on this site... Anyway, I think it's moreabout subliminal messaging. How it influences people, and infiltrates their minds without them knowing, and eventually people just become robots because of these messages in their heads. |
|
| Super Furry Animals – Golden Retriever Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| About a woman who sleeps around. | |
| Super Furry Animals – The Man Don't Give A Fuck Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| It's about the media and how they don't care about normal people, they just have a fixation on celebrities. | |
| Queens of the Stone Age – Burn The Witch Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| It's seemingly about a guy who has rumours made up about him, and he won't stop until he finds out who started it. | |
| Queens of the Stone Age – Leg Of Lamb Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I tihnk it's about a famous person, who becomes an asshole. :) Have a nice day everyone. | |
| Stone Temple Pilots – Silvergun Superman Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
I think it may be about media journalists making stuff up about a famous person and ruining their lives for a bit of money, hence the "Take a dime, take a piece of my life". And maybe their jealous side being revealed could lead to their downfall, so they use it as a weapon against them If not that then I agree with Cuevo's interpretation of jealousy. |
|
| Queens of the Stone Age – Regular John Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I think it's about a stalker who becomes obsessed with a prostitute. The line "Your home number's on the wall" suggests she's a call girl and "Where's your daddy now" might point to the broken ome that prostitutes are stereotyped to have grown up in. e wants a relationship with the prostitute and she rejects him painfully. The knife line, I think, is a metaphor for the nastiness in people. The guy's 'knife' is his creepiness, and the girl's is the vindictive way she rejected him. | |
| Stone Temple Pilots – Army Ants Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I reckon it's something along the lines of bullying. | |
| Maxïmo Park – The Coast Is Always Changing Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
I saw this band last month for my birthday when they were on tour with Kaiser Chiefs and they seem like great fun. They also seem like their Geordie rivals.;) Anyway, when I saw them, the frontman said that this song was about travelling to the East coast. |
|
| Razorlight – Dalston Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Maybe he uses the word "darling" to show how close friends he and Pete were. | |
| The Smashing Pumpkins – Bury Me Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Yeah, it's a very ambiguous song, and it mght not be about LSD. But you have to learn that back then, Billy took LSD on a daily basis and it inspired a lot of his songs, and little would doubt there would be songs about the drug. Or maybe it's just about drugs in general, and "She will bury me" means that the drug will kill him. | |
| The Smashing Pumpkins – Window Paine Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Oh yeah, this song has a lot of influence from "Warpigs" by Black Sabbath. | |
| R.E.M. – Drive Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| It's about dictatorship, and questioning the morality of it. | |
