| Paul Westerberg – Black-Eyed Susan Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Someone called Susan with Black Eyes. Also works for the plant Black Eyes Susan. Paul being poetic. Veins will collapse (drug use) ? She is possibly a prostitute: Painted your curb, they know where to park/ Painted your face, can't find you in the dark/ Goodnight girl come on dance with me/... Might even be from the point of view of the guy who picked her up. People pick her up off the curb, she puts on makeup (painted face) and gets lost in the dark (can't be found). |

| Paul Westerberg – Even Here We Are Lyrics | 10 years ago |
A song for all the beautiful losers with whom Paul identifies. Even here we are. Says while you can dig the song of the bird up in the sky, but to me of the scream of the earthbound is more attractive. I think this is based on Carson Mccullers' Heart is a Lonely Hunter. The protagonist is John Singer (Paul). The blind girl is a character from that too. Scream of the man who never learnt to fly is another character who could not break away from his situation. |

| Paul Westerberg – Things Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Basically covers the arc of a relationship. In the end he is basically packing his things and leaving the house. So looks back onto the relationship that has failed and is trying to depersonalise it all to make it tolerable. Calling important just THINGS. Part of the reason the relationship also fails is that the guy can't express his feelings. Does not have the ability to be expressive. And just calls all the important stuff THINGS. A reason it all falls apart for him. THINGS tend to be something impersonal. Says that I will mine this relationship of ours that fell apart; i will write it into a song, a Thing I give away. |

| Paul Westerberg – Dice Behind Your Shades Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Roll the Dice behind the shades means Roll your eyes at all this crap you are seeing. Possibly written for a girl who the singer sees someone 'twice her age' hitting on. Everyone around her is trying to talk down to her/ to make her feel stupid. When all they are doing is lying and making up stuff. She has gotten stuck in a pseudo intellectual crowd when she really needs to take it to a higher place/ where the fake action ain't/ ... open windows/ open shutters (of the mind?). Looking at all around her. |

| Paul Westerberg – Silver Naked Ladies Lyrics | 10 years ago |
| About a dirty old man who thinks he is a free old man. Want's to watch Naked Ladies on the Silver (screen)? Picks up chicks and moves on. | |
| Paul Westerberg – Runaway Wind Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Basically a song to a woman who has lost her dreams and perhaps gotten domesticated. Traded looking at stars through a telescope, to reading gossip of peeping through keyholes into other people's lives. She needs to break away like a run away wind. Archly, may be from someone who wants to have an affair with someone married or tied down by a situation. Paul often writes about women (Merry Go Round), but I wonder if this is autobiographical and he is the woman is the song. Didn't he once say the femme in Merry Go Round was really him. |

| Paul Westerberg – Knockin on Mine Lyrics | 10 years ago |
The song is a recommendation to be anti-intellectual, to dig life and experience and not be bookish. Curiously as the first song of 14 songs which was originally supposed to be like a book (the cover is still), here is Paul saying that what you read is often common knowledge, key being such knowledge is common and you did not really need to read it. You get bookish, others read the same books, and u end up being common as that newspaper you throw away. So please don't bother Paul, knocking on his mine/mind and just let him rock out. Sorta the entire Mats stupid but honest, heart on sleeve wisdom. In fact 'What they teach you to fix, needs to be broke', people are born to break the mould an not to be moulded by their education. |

| Def Leppard – Love Bites Lyrics | 10 years ago |
On one level you can see how the guy is f*cking up his own relationship. His doubts are holding him back from committing. Says I don't want to touch you too much baby. Maybe his doubts are well founded but quite possibly not. He doesn't seem to be getting jiggy with it; rather keeps wondering is she is gratifying herself :) This song is basically the Anti-Love and Affection. There the guy just wants sex. Here he is not sure he wants it as he might go mad getting addicted to it. |
| Def Leppard – Love And Affection Lyrics | 10 years ago |
I agree with Priaprism's interpretation. The guy just wants sex, does not want committment, love or affection, any of the deeper stuff. Strange way to end an album. Hardly a ballad as most of you seem to be suggesting. More of an ant-ballad. As with with other songs, again interesting to note that the love is between a man and girl, not a man and woman. For example also in Make Love Like A Man. They use it too often to not actually mean it. |
| Def Leppard – Make Love Like A Man Lyrics | 10 years ago |
The key is 'Every guy grab a girl Love her like a man' Basically saying have sex like a grownup. Contrast this with the kid from Let's Get Rocked. He is finally getting his rocks off... and here is the Leps advise to him: Make love like a man. Curiously, one is advised to get hold of a girl and not a woman to make love to like a man :) A lot of this does sound like bluster tho. Jury still out on how it gets on in the sack. |
| Def Leppard – Let's Get Rocked Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Frustrated and bothered, the story of any teen. Digs rock over classical. But it's not beneath him to ask a classical loving chiquita for a rock. Obviously one replaces Rocked with F*cked and the song gives up its meaning. Basically a Summertime Blues (Eddie Cochrane) update. |
