Basically covers the arc of a relationship. In the end he is basically packing his things and leaving the house. So looks back onto the relationship that has failed and is trying to depersonalise it all to make it tolerable. Calling important just THINGS.
Part of the reason the relationship also fails is that the guy can't express his feelings. Does not have the ability to be expressive. And just calls all the important stuff THINGS. A reason it all falls apart for him.
