Everything but the Girl – Wrong Lyrics 11 years ago
I always thought it's about a narrator who cheated on someone s/he's in a relationship with. I say narrator because it's not necessarily female; Tracey can be found voicing a character who's clearly Ben, e.g. Flipside, Downhill Raceri

And the song is about the significant other/bf/partner pulling bitter/sour behavior, or emotional bullying of some sort on her - a little give and take, possibly manipulative? comments like "it's decision time again" and so on.

I didn't get the chorus for the longest time, but I guess it's "I realize I'd still rather be with you more than anyone else" - so, wherever you go I will follow you, cause I was wrong about wanting everything.

And the ground's gonna swallow me, because I was so wrong about that, such shame!

Paula Cole – El Greco Lyrics 12 years ago
A very dark song about a very dark time in Paula's life. Possibly a moment in the time after Amen came out, or after the Hugh Paghdam album that WB refused to release.

Each time I play this song it occurs to me that it must be so painful to talk about "All my seriousness, My so-called spirituality" -- most likely a reference to the Amen album and how it became a debacle of sorts just because she chose to use the word Amen.

It's painful having to admit you might've believed wrong, or used/presented your belief in a way that toppled your boat. This kind of screw-up is worse than simply screwing up because you may have genuinely thought your belief was something good, and that all things considered, presentation is just a detail... In that sense the song is really a companion to Nietzsche's Eyes.

Natalie Imbruglia – Left Of The Middle Lyrics 12 years ago
Towards the end of a relationship, you keep trying to talk sense into the other party but you end up just arguing in circles, and you come to the realization that the two of you CANNOT and MUST NOT get back together, that ship has simply sailed.

There are moments of momentary weakness and you may call out to each other, but you know you cannot respond cause that would just continue the vicious cycle.

It's not easy not being someone's center of attention, you lament at first - that someone is out there free as a bird. But after you''ve finally firmed up and cut him loose, suddenly empty and bereft, you come to understand that it's not easy being free, either.

Jann Arden – Good Mother Lyrics 12 years ago
I've always thought that, more than paying tribute to her folks, Jann is talking about that moment where you used to be so weak and felt so wrong, but you've finally mustered enough willpower to do something about the situation. That's why the chorus is "no I, I've never wanted anything so bad".

Reading Jann's memoir, my impression is that she went through a lot of years without really pursuing her music, seemingly just squandering her 20ies away. She left school without knowing what job she can do or wants to do, and it's just one dead end after another. I'm totally like that myself, and it's because I literally don't feel like I know what to do, or even what I can do, and there's a general fear of going out into the world as myself. It's not really a fear of criticism, it's an omg-I-literally-can't-stand-on-my-own. Hence the remark on the album booklet saying, "be yourself at all times". This song is a rallying cry for yourself.

Roxette – Queen Of Rain Lyrics 12 years ago
I think it's about trying to approach someone that's very difficult for you to love.

Tourism was my first CD purchase ever, but it's only now, 20 years later, that I began to wonder if this "Queen of Rain" person is actually the same character that appeared in "The Rain". It may have been from different times of her life (with Queen of Rain being older), or it simply may have been the same story told from his & her points of view, like Cinnamon Street versus 2 Cinnamon Street.

If you consider the words of "The Rain" she was too caught up in her own sadness/grief to love "him". In this song it's probably gotten worse: her protection mechanism is a house with 50 bedrooms. The narrator is someone trying to make her realize there's a time in life for tender things like...love.

"dream about the sun you queen of rain" is really in a "come on! dream about the sun, you queen of rain!" tone :P
