And I'm guessing that he feels because their minds were poison--they feared, the devil won the fight in the end. I think the song is about how sometimes ppl grow up wanting to escape the things they've had to live with when they were young, but instead ends up being just the same-- "And sometimes you close your eyes and see the place where you used to live, when you were young" -- like finding out you're being just like your mom or dad or in their situation. So maybe this girl's mom/dad was a cheat and now this is the kind of example she has for relationships and keeps going for the wrong guy. And, I think, Brandon is using Jesus as a reference, because if you're Christian then you believe that you should put your faith in God(Jesus) to save you from 'your old ways' not some beautiful boy(man). But this girl does the latter, and keeps ending up heartbroken. She meets someone new and "he doesn't look a thing like Jesus..." meaning that she knows his not perfect and wholesome and good and honest, but she "plays forgiveness" and excuse his faults,(blind love) because he sweet talks his way into her life. She thinks, this time, she will take it slow and it will all work out. I agree that its about a couple wanting to keep their relationship pure, but it gets hard as temptation is a constant battle. "And we're caught up in the crossfire of Heaven and Hell, and we're searching for shelter" I think implies that they know they can't handle this so they are maybe asking God's shelter and he is telling them to lay their bodies down, meaning forget about their worldly needs and desires. This is what keeps them grounded, and at the end of the song he is reminding her of this, to lay her body down next to him, implying that he's forgetting about his desires and also reinforcing the image that their not having sex, but just laying next to each other. I would like to add that the lyrics 'watching you dress as you turn down the light" says to me that she didn't 'undress' and thus didn't give in to their desires. It would be difficult to portray that image if he only said "lay your body down" |

But he had a vision(invention) maybe of using his fame as a 'church' and even though people might not recognize it as one, he knew that he would never forsake God or be without him. His lyrics will be as a sermon and his way of carrying his beliefs to others. He doesn't care if people take it wrong or if it will get hard, he will keep true to his beliefs. Tom said that this song was very personal to him..and to me it sounds a bit as if he'd written it for Edith. She was diagnosed with a serious heart condition and the lyrics "I'm on watch here, so close your eyes and get some rest, I'm here to watch your heart, it's been faulty from the start, I'm the ribs in your chest" is a beautiful way for him to tell her how she shouldn't worry, and that he will be there for her through this. He will be strong "I'm an apple, your the tree and I won't fall when your shook." Another way of saying he will be strong for them in this time of worry. The rest of the song also states how he doesn't care about all the pretentious things others care about in a relationship, all he wants is her to be safe and to stay with him (maybe he's praying that she mustn't die). Also this shock of finding out about her illness has made him reflect on how he's been. And he apologizes for his conflicting opinions. "It ends with a kiss, it ends with a tear, it ends with the lights out bathed in our fears, tell me nonsense, I don't want sincere, I saw the lightning cut through the last winter sky of the year" Their conversations ends with her crying and them both fearful of what's going to happen. He's trying to stay positive and cheerful for her, as this news to him was like 'lighting cut through the last winter sky of the year' which I guess would be very dark and disturbing. In my opinion its about the band having aspirations of 'making it big' but then found the reality not to be much fun, shocked of how it really is in Hollywood and the music industry. "It kicks like a sleep twitch." They were suddenly and negatively awoken from this dream of how great it would be to be famous. If he meant there is no God, he wouldn't have added the word "here" making it about the place or situation they are in. I might be totally wrong about this one and will probably get some slack for it, but this is how I perceive this song... "You fall wonderfully" God takes the fall (the blame) for their hardship. "If I question everything you say Another answer crumbles the birth of my day It's when you appear" He is constantly questioning God's existence, but everyday something in his life crumbles that disbelief. "You, calling out a name You, swimming to me through a dream" God appears in a vision, calling him to belief. "Life is a fear of falling through All the cracks" But he is scared and can't help his negativity about life, worrying about everything. | This song to me describes the weakness in people. They are 'forced' to give into their desires. In my opinion Tom Smith writes with a wry sense of humor as he asks what's more important to you...good or bad...but the answer for most people is clearly, that whatever they desire will 'force' them to decide their actions. They will give up everything, even God, for it. I think 'taken by force' is part of his way of mocking these people. They just can't help themselves, the will of their desire is just too strong. | |

"Out of touch and older than I look" I think it's about a person in the kind of relationship where you forget who you are, as you are too wrapped up in making the other person happy. "I've got nothing to say to my oldest friends" again they've sacrificed their friendships as their partner is maybe the jealous type. "Warmth is in the awkward silence, carried on an anxious glance" Conversations are dead in this relationship, and the only affection received, feels awkward. After they've voiced their opinion about the lack of love or the problems in the relationship, they get silenced and told they're "...out of line" "All my doubts are dead," The partner eases all their doubts by explaining them away.... "Take me back to bed" This is not said in an affectionate way but rather paints the image of someone being controlled or with the lack of confidence. They give in once more, forgive and forget whatever their partner has done wrong. "Don't let it get lost, at all cost." The common theory that you need to give it your all in a relationship, to make it work, was taken too literally by this person. And even though they've lost their essence, and all that was dear to them, they still believe this is needed to make this relationship work. |

There's people to be fooled And there always has been" He is saying they pretend to be strong in front of other and has always put up a brave-face. Okies so this is my feel on this song: "Take me home, somewhere safe" I think he is singing about someone whose life was spiralling out of control. And after drinking or abusing drugs maybe, she would ask him to take her home... "Lean on me, saving grace" The fact that she leaned on him was his only saving grace or all he thought she saw in him. "Such a light, where you are" She died because of her reckless behaviour and is in heaven now. "Something new, forest fire" He sees her as a forest fire...burning out of control, always wanting something new, never satisfied. Well heaven is something new for her too now. "I'll miss this when it's gone, Let's not waste life, come on" This was probably her favourite saying, of living in the moment and having fun while your young. "We all sit next to the fire We watch you burn" He blames himself for not helping her...him and all their friends just watched how she kept spiralling out of control and didn't do anything to stop it. |

"In that moment you realize that Something you thought would always be there Will die like everything else" He is immobile...can't use his body any more..in a sense it's dead. This next part can either be taken as someone who feels as if they are weak or it could be said in a sarcastic way.... "These thoughts I must not think of" People are telling him 'don't give up..don't be negative...all will be fine" but he can't help having those negative thoughts OR he is tired of people telling them this. "Dreams I can't make sense of" He doesn't know what to do with those dreams and ambitions he had before this happened. "I need you to tell me it's okay" Now either this is someone who needs another to tell him all will be fine...or he is tired of being treated as a weakling and hearing this, being sarcastic in saying these words. But seeing as he is very angry about all this I would not picture him as a meek person "You are a sleeping lion In your bed I will not wake you" They are very angry about being like this and takes it out on everyone around. So no one wants to come near any more as he just snaps their heads off "You're the moment love has passed" He is just angry and depressed. "We all must learn to hate you" He is family and they love him, but they must learn to hate him coz he doesn't want anyone near him. "You're a memory from before Please, don't let me forget you" They don't want to forget how he used to be, but he is making it really hard. They don't want to remember him like this. "You're the wolves at my door" They are really worried about him. "How can you know what things are worth if your hands won't move to do a days work?" This is what he is telling himself. He feels worthless because he can't do anything to contribute. OR he thinks this is how other see him..that because he can't do things he is not human any more in a sense as he doesn't have any needs any more. |

This is how I perceive this song: "Baby, don't go and lose it again" This is a girl who came from an abusive relationship telling herself not to fall for the same person again. "You would always run out of the sun and into the rain" She seems to attract the same bad situation over and over "This house just creeps," The house is the girl's mind and it is slow or down and depressed "It won't let you sleep, all that noise, there in your brain, won't give you peace." She is overwhelmed by her negative thoughts It says: "I won't let you go where there's rivers or town folk I won't let you see 'cause you're safe here, safe here with me" She is telling herself not to live her life and go out and be social. The only way she feels safe is to go inward and be by herself. "Baby, don't go, and love him again" Again she is telling herself not to go back to the abusive guy. "You will always leap into a fire, into a flame" Same as above. "This house just aches to keep you safe You're in every single thing You're in the walls, you're in the space" She is very critical of herself. Analysing everything. I agree with the lyrics "when I'm a gun in a fist fight" and "can't put a price on your health" and also "these boys just wanna have fun." "I don't want to be ignored...gun in a fist fight..." Think he is speaking to the critics who always seem to try and put their talent down...they are just out to be nasty and get noticed...unfair..like someone taking a gun to a fist fight....they are eating them alive with the horrible things they say...chewing them up...but it just attract the flies..which are the people who loves hearing negative things about famous people.... "I give a little to you......" he gives a bit of himself to everyone...the fans, the critics...If you see his live performances you will see how much he puts into it...yet the critics are never happy...he has probably heard that he needs to slow down because 'you can't put a price on your health' yet he keeps on giving all he's got "I don't wanna be left out...." He wants recognition for his talent, but he seems to get fucked over by them every time...coz they end up writing lies. "Don't wait for the sun...your story's already been spun"...They dismiss his talent or what this band is about without waiting to see all they have to offer...just writing negative things...and all they really want to do is have fun which he have said endless times in interviews, yet the damage is done...coz unfortunately people listen to the tabloids and read the crap. They are brilliant in their live shows,some of the best performances I've ever seen. But unfortunately because they don't get their tits out and bump and grind like most of the current artists out there, they just don't seem 'important' enough to the critics. Not that I would mind Tom doing that of course, but I love the fact that they don't sell out to the tabloids. :) |

I also hear 'in the arms of a lover" and also "I feel my blood boil as our shadows fuse" and he sings "me instead of hey". To me this song is about someone who wanted a deep relationship with a girl who is like a black widow (or two faced/hearted). She just devours him. When he goes to her, he is like a mess (meaning he is in love and she isn't, she uses him just for the physical part of the relationship) thus him saying he was naive to think they could've had something more and when he is with her his view changes (he want to end things but he isn't strong enough to do so when he is in her presence.) He sees their shadows dance (they get physical) and i also hear "door" instead of "dawn" emphasising that he feels trapped with her. It makes him mad that he can't resist her. Everything she does breaks him. His composure, his soul maybe (in knowing she isn't feeling the same) his heart. I really love all editors's songs. Tom seems like a real deep thinker. Love that their songs aren't about the soppy superficial stuff most artists sing about. They aren't a "dark" band imo, they are a "deep" one :) |

There are two ways I interpret this song Either In the beginning of a relationship, you don't mind the lights being on when you take things to the next step, as you are kind of blind to the flaws. He had been in the relationship with this person for a while as he says he don't mind the lights being on still. Although the lights are on for different reasons now (they are not involved it that way anymore) as the lights are only keeping him awake. He pretends that he doesn't mind it. She is all he ever wanted, but he knows she will leave him soon. As their relationship is not what it used to be. He isn't brave enough to speak up and say all he wants to. Or The person he loves is dying from an illness which is maybe left her looking bad. So he tells her that he still loves the light on (like in the beginning of their physical relationship) but she is unable to act on it as she is too ill. So that's why he says it keeps him awake and he doesn't mind. Its maybe to tell her that he still wants her in the same way regardless of what she looks like now. Again she is everything he wants but she is dying and leaving him soon. He isn't brave enough to face her death and has a lot he still wants to tell her, but can't. |

To me this is about losing someone, and to him it felt like 'pulling a blindfold down and running into a field of trees' also it felt like saying goodbye to everyone you know and not seeing them, which will obviously hurt emotionally to do so. "I cant shake this feeling.." he can't stop thinking about it and it's gotten so bad that he is maybe not even bothered about keeping clean anymore "my dirty hands" he is seeing himself looking like this and feeling as if he had been in a war.
