| Helmet – In the Meantime Lyrics | 11 months ago |
| @[ukirsche:52850] Given the lyricist grew up in a small 'redneck' midwestern town it makes sense it would have an air of resignation to it. The late 80's were the beginning of a long, slow slide to US mediocrity. | |
| The Who – Imagine A Man Lyrics | 2 years ago |
|
The song's meaning is in the last verse. It asks you to imagine yourself as an old man (or person) looking back on their life and thinking about all the things they've been through. This old person is at the end of their life imagining everything they've gone through before they die. It's suggesting we stop and think about our lives and appreciate them for what they are like someone near death would. "Imagine a man Not a child of any revolt But a man of today feeling new Imagine a soul So old it it is broken And you will know your invention is you" In other words which one would you rather be? |

| Killing Joke – Love Like Blood Lyrics | 2 years ago |
|
From SongFacts: In this song, Killing Joke lead singer Jaz Coleman sings about approaching love with the same passion as a soldier in battle. In his Songfacts interview, Coleman said: "The song itself was a distillation of everything that we hold dear, and one must aspire to walk and talk what you write about in your songs - actually live it." Works by the Japanese author Yukio Mishima were an inspiration for this song, specifically his 1967 book The Samurai Ethic and Modern Japan. "I loved the warrior principal," Jaz Coleman told us. "To freedom with blood, if you like." At the time writing the lyrics in his own blood appealed to him as he felt it was the most direct and sincere way an artist could write about such a subject. It's about how in both love and war the most direct route is often the most violent one (either in the sense of being direct or forceful). In the end, it all comes to nothing be it due to the end of love or death on the battlefield. |

Some people say this is about scat (shit fetish). Some say it's about love. The truth is It's both. It's about someone being in a bad relationship where they take the shit someone keeps giving them because they're too in love with them to accept the truth, AND it's about someone literally being fed shit because Wayne had a sick sense of humor. It was written about a toxic ex-girlfriend who treated him like shit. What better way to get back at them than by writing a song that tells her how he feels while getting generations of fans to believe she likes eating shit? |

| Megadeth – Family Tree Lyrics | 4 years ago |
|
As others have said this is a song about a abusive incestuous relationships. To break it down: "Forgotten things remembered- The tigers eat their young." 'Forgotten things remembered' refers to someone who has buried their trauma-usually due to the post-traumatic stress disorder that most often accompanies sexual abuse. 'The tigers eat their young'-Male (and sometimes female) tigers will eat their cubs if they notice any kind of sickness or weakness. This is so that a young cub with less chance of surviving doesn't 'steal' necessary resources from the other cubs. In the case of the song, it's meant to refer to older relatives preying upon younger ones. It's been shown by most research that the overwhelming majority of child abuse is perpetuated by older family members. "The body stayed but inside the head The mind was on the run." This part is talking about someone mentally recusing themselves from the terrible thing happening to them by diving deep into their imagination or using some other form of escapism (such as temporary amnesia) to take themselves out of the situation. "Conspiracy of silence. The only way out of pain Is turn around and run through it, man Too wet to come in from the rain." Basically, because victims are most often in situations where it's dangerous to speak out about what they've experienced (and due to the huge social stigma around the subject), the only way many of them feel they can get through their trauma is to not speak about it. To bury it inside them, and push through life. 'Too wet to come in from the rain' means they feel they've been through so much terrible treatment there isn't any escape so they have to just accept it. 'Tell them... I know they were doing it to you But don't try doing it to me.' Unfortunately, this kind of abuse can end up cyclical. "Research suggests that child abuse is known to repeat itself from generation to generation. This cycle of abuse can occur when children were victims of abuse and/or neglect or witnessed violence between their parents or caregivers." https://www.childwelfare.gov/topics/can/impact/long-term-consequences-of-child-abuse-and-neglect/abuse/ Here the songwriter is asking that the listener (who may be someone who witnessed an older relative being abused) speak out against the cycle of abuse. 'Let me show you how I love you. It's our secret, you and me. Let me show you how I love you- But keep it in the family tree... The secret of the family tree.' The cycle of familial sexual abuse in a nutshell. Groomers convince victims that the abuse is a form of love and that they should keep silent about it. Because it's kept secret there's less chance of breaking the cycle. 'When you hear them saying "Trust me", don't wait to see what's next.' Run away from the abuse if possible (something that usually isn't). 'Thrown to the wolves, forever trusting. Raised in a form of living Hell.' Kids grow up trusting adults which is why they're so easily victimized. 'Sing a one-note song of rage- Live and die within your heart.' The abuse changes kids. They end up far more likely to end up being abused by those both within and outside the family and are far more prone to becoming drug addicts, alcoholics, and victims of domestic abuse. 'So beware in the shadows. Your family tree waits in the dark.' It's important that sexual abuse be confronted, and victims believed. The social stigma around this issue needs to be eliminated so that all victims of sexual abuse feel they'll be believed, and that they're not to blame for what's been done for them. Otherwise, they face a dark future where their abuse will continue, and where their abusers won't face consequences for their actions. This is one of Megadeth's most underrated songs. Songs that deal with childhood sexual abuse in a way that is respectful of victims, and that speak out about the harm it does are all too rare. It's just sad they need to be written at all. |

| Iron Maiden – The Book of Souls Lyrics | 4 years ago |
|
"Sacrifices buried with kings Accompany them on a journey with no end To an afterlife that's rich with fruit of all the gods And to face the demons Of their underworld haunts" The song begins with a foreshadowing of its end. A ruler is buried along with their followers. Many ancient societies had this custom-slaves and followers were often sacrificed in the belief that the ruler would be afford ed a place of honor in the afterworld and would want/need servants to rule over. That and to sacrifice should they end up in their version of Hell. It was a cruel way of hedging their bets. "The sentient is sent to seek out all the truth A flight to earth that is a given from his birth To rise from ashes of the dead Out of the fire is sent to full fill man's desire" A 'sentient' or clever/wise/smart person rises to power. Whether they are or are just seen as wise and/or a savior they're granted power over others in part because those they rule over feel they'll be given what they want, too. "The power day and night and death he ruled them The sky and earth and the fires too Two headed reptile symbol of his reign Universes of the underworld" This refers to the Aztec ruler Moctezuma. The two-headed serpent was a symbol of his reign. "A life that's full of all the wealth and riches Can never last for an eternity After living in a golden paradise The ultimate sacrifice" When Cortés arrived in Mexico from Spain he was greeted by Moctezuma. "Some sources report that Moctezuma thought that Cortés was the feathered serpent god Quetzalcoatl and treated him accordingly. Cortés was given a number of valuable gifts, which included turquoise sculptures, and possibly this serpent. Despite the gifts and the peaceful reception, Moctezuma was taken prisoner by Cortés and his troops took Moctezuma's capital, Tenochtitlan, by 1521. The Aztecs were brutally and systematically enslaved and murdered, in spite of their generosity. They then fell victim to smallpox and other European diseases brought to Mexico by Cortés and his troops." -Wikipedia "Prophecy of sky gods, the sun and moon Passing of old ways will come true soon Falling of ages, forest of kings The search for the truth, the book of souls" Many cultures have made prophecies about the end times. Many cultures have also fallen, thus fulfilling those prophecies. The 'book of souls' is the record of all the civilizations lost. The rest of the song is a metaphor for both the fall of the Aztec civilization as well as a metaphor for all kingdoms. As others have said and Bruce has stated explicitly this happens to all kingdoms and empires no matter how benevolent. Time passes, the people become greedy or disastisfied or some invader or disease comes along and they fall. It's a tale as old as time itself. |

| Bruce Dickinson – King In Crimson Lyrics | 4 years ago |
|
Bruce stated in an interview that each song has a frame in which it operates. The first song-this one-is framed by fear. The album has a loosely religious theme overall (its name and its title track are derived from the Rosicrucian manifesto 'The Chymical Wedding of Christian Rosenkreutz' by Johann Valentin Andreae, who was a German theologian who lived in the late 1500's/early 1600's). This song uses the imagery of Beelzebub (or Satan), ravens (which in many cultures are bad omens/associated with death), nighttime/darkness and the concept of sin/coming doom to illustrate primeval fears. The lyrics are written as if by some nameless superstitious figure attempting to give warning to others. |

| Winger – Blind Revolution Mad Lyrics | 4 years ago |
|
This was written shortly after the LA riots of the early 90's. It's about gang violence to a small degree but it's mostly about how the general population of the US is to blame for the conditions that led to the riots because of their willful ignorance towards them. This despite their being glued to CNN 24/7 watching the result of that ignorance unfold before their eyes. Meanwhile nothing gets better for those stuck in oppressive situations. Just more potential wasted because nobody cares enough to give a shit. It's that ignorance that led to even more racism and oppression, and eventually to the riots that have been going on all across the US since 2019. |

| Joe wrote this about his daughter Emma who died in a car crash when she was three and a half. Joe is saying that God took her away and hurt both him and the child's mother. | Devo – Peek-a-Boo Lyrics | 4 years ago |
|
"Peek-a Boo! was a song about Devo's circus-like look and the dark side of human nature, the side we try to keep secret, the side we try to deny, in this Christian world where we're only supposed to have happy endings and only supposed to be good, and instead Devo is dealing with what evil is here in a very light-hearted manner." -Gerald Casale, DEVO's bassist. Basically it's someone looking into a mirror & trying to hide from their own dark side. No matter how they try to pretend it doesn't exist we all have to face it at one point or another. Some of us are just better at accepting & coping with it than others. |

| Black Sabbath – I Won't Cry For You Lyrics | 6 years ago |
| This song is about someone committing a sin. Doing something they knew was wrong and that hurt someone else. They don't know what they're going to do, try to drown themselves in their own sorrow and feel guilty because they think it's penitent. That it will help them feel better as they do their best to pretend it's enough but all the while they're taking for granted the people or things they should find important. Meanwhile the guilt haunts them and despite how 'sorry' they feel the writer isn't going to shed a tear for them. They know it's all bs. | |
| Fuel – Hemorrhage (In My Hands) Lyrics | 6 years ago |
|
"Memories are just where you laid them" The memory of all the good and bad times we shared are still fresh in my mind. Right where you left them when you left me. "Drag the waters till the depths give up their dead" Keep bringing them up and you'll be reopening old wounds. "What did you expect to find? Was there something you left behind?" Why do you keep bringing this stuff up? Is there some piece of my heart you forgot to tear out and take with you? "Don't you remember Anything I said when I said- Don't fall away And leave me to myself. Don't fall away And leave love bleeding in my hands, In my hands again. And leave love bleeding in my hands, In my hands. Love lies bleeding." Don't leave me again. Every time you do all I see is pain. Our love-all our memories and hopes and dreams bleeding in my hands. "Hold me now I feel contagious." I feel emotionally sick. Like I've got some disease. "Am I the only place that you've left to go?" The girl who left him repeats this behavior with others. He's the only one who continues to accept her back. He can't let her go no matter how much it's killing him. "She cries her life is like Some movie black and white. Dead actors faking lines. Over and over and over again she cries." All she can think of is herself. Her pain. Her misery. Not understanding it's her own fault and that she's killing the one who would love her best. "Don't fall away And leave me to myself. Don't fall away And leave love bleeding in my hands. In my hands again. And leave love bleeding in my hands. In my hands Love lies bleeding" And still the pain goes on. "And I want you But you turned away. You don't remember But I do. You never even tried." Here the bitterness is in full bloom. She doesn't even remember how hard he's worked to be good to her but he does. "Don't fall away And leave me to myself. Don't fall away And leave love bleeding in my hands, In my hands again. Leave love bleeding in my hands, In my hands again. Leave love bleeding in my hands, In my hands again, oh!" Song for a toxic relationship. |

| Type O Negative – Love You To Death Lyrics | 7 years ago |
|
This is NOT the singer being submissive. SO many people misinterpret this song. It's about a duplicitous woman with a 'beast' inside her waiting to prey upon the one she's singing to. Waiting to love them to death. Like all of Peter's Type O songs it's meant to have a dark twist to it. In her place one hundred candles burning as salty sweat drips from her breast. Her hips move and I can feel what they're saying, swaying they say, "The beast inside of me's gonna get ya, get ya, get..." Black lipstick stains her glass of red wine. "I am your servant, may I light your cigarette?" Those lips smooth, yeah I can feel what you're saying. Praying. They say, "The beast inside of me's gonna get ya, get ya, get..." "I beg to serve, your wish is my law. Now close those eyes and let me love you to death. Shall I prove I mean what I'm saying? Begging. I say the beast inside me's gonna get ya, get ya, get..." "Let me love you too Let me love you to death." "Hey am I good enough for you? Hey am I good enough for you? Am I? Am I? Am I good enough for you?" |

| David Lee Roth – Ladies' Nite In Buffalo? Lyrics | 8 years ago |

It's about a guy who feels he was lulled into marriage with the promise of the stars but feels like his partner let down their end of the bargain. He's got his kids in the background and responsibilities but despite how much trouble he could get into (heat/sidewalk steaming = too hot/risky to go wandering) he's reconsidering his relationship. He's been out on the prowl before and all the songs he listens to reinforce his wandering narrative. The guy ends up in a bar on ladies night where he trots out the same old cliche pick up lines at a lady/potential lover who like him is a frequent visitor to the bar and who is also in pursuit of a shallow hook-up. |

| It has a double meaning. It can be about someone in a bad relationship where they know despite things being good they're going to end up back in the bad part of the relationship. | Dashboard Confessional – The Secret's In The Telling Lyrics | 9 years ago |

I think the meaning is clear especially to those who like me have been in an incestuous relationship. This is someone pining for their sibling. "Our act of defiance We keep this secret in our blood No paper or letters We pass just close enough to touch We love in secret names We hide within our veins The things that keep us bound to one another " They share a blood bond. The secret is that they're family. They had to end the relationship because society condemns that sort of thing. This person is unable to stop loving them though and is hurting because their love is in another's arms. It's a very tragic song. |

| The narrator is telling someone (the listener) that sometimes just when you feel you have it the most together it's when you're ready to lose it. If that's the case they see nothing wrong with escaping-in this case the song seems to be talking about drugs but it can be getting away from it all or losing yourself in sex. | Dio – I Could Have Been A Dreamer Lyrics | 10 years ago |
|
This song is a cautionary tale. Dio is singing from the perspective of someone who could have achieved their dreams. Had they taken a chance when they saw it (the sunshine) they might have seen rainbows yet they gave into fear (I heard it makes you crazy). Thing is they end up going crazy because now they're just another number. They're living a dog eat dog life and following the masses and living a life of regret. All because they did what they felt they should have instead of what they could have done- follow their dreams. |

|
Ozzy has been in and out of rehab a LOT throughout his life. He struggles with addiction every day. At one point, he was in a rehab center going through detox, and he would see visions of his wife Sharon. It's pretty easy to interpret. 'Suicide of love, we could have had it all' very likely means that instead of having a really great relationship, Ozzy kinda screwed it up by using drugs. Drug use has had a huge impact on his relationship, and I think that a lot of folks can identify with Ozzy's situation, unfortunately. I think anyone saying 'this song sucks' is missing the point. Ozzy's music covers such a wide variety of styles that he's written something for everyone. Just because it's not your thing doesn't mean it sucks. Find one of his songs you enjoy and let the folks that this means something important to have their Ozzy songs, too. He's got enough music for everyone, that's what makes him so great. |

| The Doors – Cars Hiss By My Window Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
I think it's pretty much about being with someone you really love and realizing that they don't love you anymore. She's there, but it's obvious there's no love there. No matter how your heart cries out (and here's where the cars come in. I think the hiss of the cars is the sound of his heart, that heavy feeling you start to get in your chest as your heart begins to break) to them, they're not there. Finally, we get to the sonic boom. That's when your heart breaks. Falls apart. It literally almost knocks you flat. Killed in a darkened room. Blackness. Despair. I think the reason he went with a vocal harmonica imitation is because it sounds like a cry AND a wail. This is a really hard song to listen to when you've just been through a breakup...what's worse is when there's not a word said. Least, that's what I get from it. |
