To me this song can be interpreted in two ways. A musician on tour. If you've ever seen the music video shot for this it is just footage of Michael on tour which could explain the whole long distance relationship thing. It could also be interpreted as a soldier's song home. A lot of soldiers from the earlier times never sent their letters back, they just kept them (reason I don't know) and soldiers travel a lot to different countries... I don't know. I am just guessing. |

The first time I heard this song I had thought it was about her own relationship but I have listened to it again and now I have a different thought. I don't think it is about a male/female relationship at all. I think it is about a male/male relationship because those are the hardest for people to accept. I believe that the person who is narrating this in first person is more confident in what he is than the other person reason being near the end when it say "stand up boy, I shine so bright when you're around." Those last words gave me the impression that the boy narrating this is trying to give courage to his partner to be who he is. I also have this sense that the narrator's family and some of his friends do not believe that he is truly gay and it is a phase that will pass. (We're too young, we need to grow) (Friends are the ones I loose) (If you don't believe me, then you never really knew us) That is just my view. |

Okay first off Vanessa has stated herself that she wrote this song after she came back from ballet school for holidays. In the first part of the song she tells the story about how she is attracted or even possibly in love with a boy who she has some sort of relationship with (sexual or non sexual, I am leaning towards sexual ) and how every time she bought up them being together in a romantic way he simply tells her to wait and see what the future holds and when the summer ends they grown older and are still friends but obviously not as close as they were before and she still wants them to be together but she isn't what he is looking for. She goes on to state that he has destroyed her by rejecting her but she still loves him, as time goes on during a recital or performance of some kind (most likely ballet) he is in the audience and it finally occurs to him that she is the one for him but it is too late and she has moved on but she will always love him just not in the same way. |

Exactly, Wikipedia can be easily modified by anyone so that means anyone can just write whatever they want without any evidence to prove their claims. That is why in high school and college teachers warn students not to get any information for Wikipedia due to the fact it is most probably false. |

I agree with you for a couple of reasons. "They said he was dangerous man but mama was proud and she stood her ground, she knew she was on the loosing end," which to me pretty much proves your point that even though people knew about the violence that occurred, the mother was never tried to hide it or act ashamed because she knew if she did it would just make her more of a victim. "Now I ain't saying it's right or it's wrong but maybe it's the only way. Talk about your revolution..." I believe that the daughter who narrates this song doesn't really know if what her mother did to end the cycle of abuse was good or bad but she knew her mother felt like she had to make a choice, to show her daughter that is is all right to be hit and not fight back or to show her daughter to stand up for herself whichever way that might be. |

That hardly makes any sense sorry. First off it did not give any indication in the song or music video for What Hurts The Most that the girl was even pregnant expect when she was shown vomiting which could've just been a result of her just being told the boy she was in love with is dead...the cause of her vomiting is never specified. Also if this was the continuation of What Hurts The Most wouldn't the boyfriend who had died be in the music video with the 'father and son.' Just to tell you the claim that the actors from the music video for What Hurts The Most and Here Comes Goodbye are the same people doesn't really prove your point seeing that the female does not look at all similar to the girl from the previous video and even if one of the actors were the same it could just be that they wanted to use the same actor for no real reason. |

Okay people the music video for this song and the actual song are two completely different things. When I first heard this song it seemed to me to be a standard break up song. The narrator is telling the story about how he knew she was ending the relationship by the few clues in the beginning and then the chorus is pretty much stating what the aftermath of her leaving him will feel like. The second verse is about him remembering what they had together and what he thought would happen in the future. Here is some evidence to prove my point: "And she was in my arms tonight" okay some people have stated that this song is about a mother loosing her son or a father loosing his daughter or something but it doesn't make much sense does it. If a mother lost her son wouldn't the words say, And HE was in my arms tonight? Also if it was about a father loosing his daughter and as some people stated the daughter is either college age or has a son of her own, those lyrics wouldn't really work well for a father daughter relationship. "I can hear say I love you like it was yesterday..." let me take a moment before I continue, yes this could be considered in some cases as a daughter telling her father or mother that she loves them before leaving or dying but as the song continues it says, "and I could see it written on her face, that she had never felt this way." Now don't get me wrong but it doesn't make much sense this being said about a child by their parent. My last point is, "One day I thought I'd see her, with her daddy by her side blah blah blah, here comes the bride" right? Well somebody earlier had said that they thought it meant that the father was in heaven looking down at his daughter but there is one problem with that theory. The entire song is written in first person perspective, the narrator so why would her father start of by speaking in first person and then go directly to ominous? Quite a big leap. The music video puts a different spin on things though it makes little sense expect maybe for the the beginning when the narrator talks about her coming to see him and how she is acting strangely and what it means. It could mean that the female in the video is coming to the house she grew up in (her fathers) and finally letting go of the memories of her father and (son?) that haunt her...but like I said the rest of the lyrics don't add up to the video. |

My Interpretation of this brilliantly simple yet deeply meaningful song. I think mainly it is about a man who is in a relationship with someone he is deeply in love with but feels as if he isn't good enough for her and she deserves much better. A few things to back me up. "She married a boy from school, thought he was oh so cool, but all he could for money is drive..." Wait lets back up, the way this is written might be a little confusing since it changes perspectives. The lyrics of the song is told from a ominous point of view but the chorus is sung by presumably the boy in this song. Now let me go back, the lyrics above pretty much mean that they were young, naive and fell in love but according to the narrator, the girl didn't realize for the boy to support them all he was qualified to do was drive hence giving the impression he did not graduate from high school. "Well you could've found a better guy, I love you till the day I die" is also pretty self explanatory. The guy is pretty much telling the girl that she could've had a better life and by choosing to stay with him meant she was giving up a better future and that he will love her forever no matter what. "Drinking himself to sleep is his only way of coping, she waits for him every night, she leaves the front door open" means that he has to work long hours and misses the girl terribly so he pretty much copes with it by drinking and numbing himself, the girl on the other hand is only surviving on hope that he will come back soon. "He keeps her photograph on his rear view mirror, she prays for him every night, she hopes he can hear her" means that he keeps her with him while he is on the road and she is always on his mind and the same with her. Now something about the ending of this video, someone above said that they were meeting up and the guy fell asleep behind the wheel because he had been drinking and died. I have a different view on it, I believe after they had an argument on the phone resulting in them slamming the phone down (btw there was a newspaper story behind him while he was on the phone talking about truck drivers using drugs which leads me to believe he wasn't only drinking to numb the pain but was also talking drugs because he looks so unhealthy in the video) they both felt horrible, she began to pack so she could see him after all this time and he drank more to numb the pain and then finally decided to go back home but on his way he crashes. The last lyrics you here are "love you till the day I die" which pretty much tells us that he is dead. |

I have listened to this song eight times in the past hour and watched the video 7 times. To me it seems as if Matthew is asking himself and the girl he is in a relationship with whether after learning about his faults he is still worth something. It isn't exactly a traditional break up or love song... it is more of a song that questions the worth of a person and whether even if one person is screwed up and can't commit because of (in this case) a past relationship does that mean the new relationship will never work out? In the beginning he says, "maybe I'm crazy" then asks the question, "am I no good to you now?" which is like asking if he is still worth it. "Spend my days with doctors and the nights with crooks and all of them sell me for a song" which makes me think that he is seeing someone for his problems during the day but at night he ends up getting another source of 'help'. One of the last verses he says, "I'm giving up, I'm starting over, I wanna be the one who holds you," which makes me think he has finally convinced himself that she does love him by surrendering and putting his guard down, that he deserves to be happy after. |
