Here Comes Goodbye Lyrics
I can hear the truck tires coming up the gravel road
And it's not like her to drive that slow, nothing's on the radio
Footsteps on the front porch
I hear my door bell
She usually comes right in
Now I can tell
Here comes goodbye
Here comes the last time
Here comes the start of every sleepness night
The first of every tear I'm gonna cry
Here comes the pain
Here comes me wishing things had never changed
And she was right here in my arms tonight
But here comes goodbye
I can hear her say "I Love You" like it was yesterday
And I can see it written on her face, that she had never felt this way
One day I thought I'd see her with her daddy by her side
And violins would play here comes the bride
But here comes goodbye
Here comes the last time
Here comes the start of every sleepness night
The first of every tear I'm gonna cry
Here comes the pain
Here comes me wishing things had never changed
And she was right here in my arms tonight
But here comes goodbye
Why does it have to go from good to bad
Before the lights turn on
Yea and you're left alone
Ohhhhhhhhhh
But here comes goodbye
Ohhhhhhhhhh
Here comes goodbye
Here comes the last time
Here comes the start of every sleepness night
The first of every tear I'm gonna cry
Here comes the pain
Here comes me wishing things had never changed
And she was right here in my arms tonight
But here comes goodbye
And it's not like her to drive that slow, nothing's on the radio

Okay people the music video for this song and the actual song are two completely different things.
When I first heard this song it seemed to me to be a standard break up song. The narrator is telling the story about how he knew she was ending the relationship by the few clues in the beginning and then the chorus is pretty much stating what the aftermath of her leaving him will feel like. The second verse is about him remembering what they had together and what he thought would happen in the future.
Here is some evidence to prove my point: "And she was in my arms tonight" okay some people have stated that this song is about a mother loosing her son or a father loosing his daughter or something but it doesn't make much sense does it. If a mother lost her son wouldn't the words say, And HE was in my arms tonight? Also if it was about a father loosing his daughter and as some people stated the daughter is either college age or has a son of her own, those lyrics wouldn't really work well for a father daughter relationship.
"I can hear say I love you like it was yesterday..." let me take a moment before I continue, yes this could be considered in some cases as a daughter telling her father or mother that she loves them before leaving or dying but as the song continues it says, "and I could see it written on her face, that she had never felt this way." Now don't get me wrong but it doesn't make much sense this being said about a child by their parent.
My last point is, "One day I thought I'd see her, with her daddy by her side blah blah blah, here comes the bride" right? Well somebody earlier had said that they thought it meant that the father was in heaven looking down at his daughter but there is one problem with that theory. The entire song is written in first person perspective, the narrator so why would her father start of by speaking in first person and then go directly to ominous? Quite a big leap.
The music video puts a different spin on things though it makes little sense expect maybe for the the beginning when the narrator talks about her coming to see him and how she is acting strangely and what it means. It could mean that the female in the video is coming to the house she grew up in (her fathers) and finally letting go of the memories of her father and (son?) that haunt her...but like I said the rest of the lyrics don't add up to the video.
Thank you so much finally found song meaning that makes scene other post don't make any scene

@MeganLovesMusicForever I saw the video for the first time a couple of years ago. I've re-watched it many times and I really cannot make the lyrics and the video make sense together..Not sure why it just frustrates me. Pretty sure I am not stupid :-)

I might not be proving myself as the smartest person here right now, but could anyone actually tell me what this song is about?

At first I thought it was just another love song, but after watching the music video it seems to me like someone died or something.

Regardless, it's an amazing song.

After watching the music video a few times, I think the older guy is dying and the little boy is like his guardian angel taking him away (maybe it's even his son because of later occurances). Towards the end (4:10-4:22), the little boy is asking the older gentleman if he's ready to go, or die? And then the lady (wife, perhaps?) is telling the guy (under the large tombstone, which is next to the smaller tombstone which could be her son) to tell her son (the guardian angel?) that she misses him. Although, the lyrics do sound like a break-up, so I'm not entirely sure.
I love the song, and it could mean break up, but the video is about death. I kinda think it's both. I think it's someone coming to notify him of a recent death and then all the thoughts he has as he is grieving his loss, and realizes all the things he will not get to do with her now. The little boy I think was his son, because as he is talking to the boy playing with the trucks, he says something about were he laid him, and then she tells him to tell her son hello. I am...

I am really not sure, because the song kinda sends a different message than the video does. <3<3 <33333 !!
I also feel that the song has a seperate meaning from the video. The video is about a family that loses a son at first and then the father, and when the father dies, the son comes back to take his father to heaven, or wherever you go after you die. You can tell they are a family because you see a family photo in the video. Although if you just listen to the song it sounds like someone knows that a relationship is going to end, and talks about how horrible its going to be and how...

Well if anyone's seen the music video it's definately about the younger woman's son dying and then later on her father dies. The son tells the day not to be afraid because in heaven there are "no more goodbyes"
As for the song, I think that the father is talking in the first verse and he's looking down from heaven and he's saying it's not like his daughter to drive that slow and that nothings on the radio and she usually walks into the house but she knows that her mother is about to tell her some bad news and her father knows the news that she's about to get (here comes goodbye..here comes the last time..here comes the start of every sleepless night..etc.)
Then in the second verse clearly it's the mother speaking because she's saying how she looked forward to the day she could see her husband walking her daughter down the aisle on her wedding day.
It's an amazing song, very well written and the music is beautiful! That's just my interpretation of the song C:
i think your point of this song is the best. at first when i heard it i thought it was about a break up. its really confusing. got any other songs confusing in mind? i cant think

I always thought, before i saw the video, that it was about a girl coming to break up with a guy and he's heartbroken. so seeing the video I GOT very confused.
I agree! If you have never seen the video, you would take the song as written, ie: A girl is coming to break up with her boyfriend. The video only confuses the song.

The way i interpreted it, i think its the mothers point of view in the song, the one the younger woman goes to visit, I think the younger woman left when her son died, but then she had to come back to say goodbye to her father who passed away later on, thats why he asks the boy whats it like, cause hes been there, also why she asks her father to pass on the message to her son.
i think the same thing
i think the same thing
well i listened to the song and then saw the video and finally understood what it really was about. it seems as if the son of the girl had died and then the father of the girl dies later on because he is asking the son what it is like and he said that there were no more goodbyes

the song has a lot of meaning, it depends on where you want it or how you relate to it.. it could be for the dead father or the girl breaking up with her. it was in this part, "one day i thought i'd see her with her daddy by her side and violins would play "here comes the bride"". most people relates to this song as a, "dead relative or someone close has died" song. while others also use this as a "breakup" song. It's all up to you guys.. i for one kinda like it as a break up song. It doesn't mean that the video has to be the meaning to the song.. This is why i like rascal flatts, their songs has so many meanings.
The music video gives the impression it a song about the loss of a loved one but the song by itself doesn't give any such indication.
