When I was little, my dad told me the song was about some sort of a secret police service (the titular "Damage, Inc."), which make certain that the Orwellian society they inhabit remains controlled, and any individuals who might be inconvenient (too intelligent, aware, or calling for change) get "removed". The lyrics seem to back this up, with the second, third, and fourth verse blatantly stating that "Damage, Inc" is going to murder you if you "go against the grain". Furthermore, the first verse underlines the implicit choice that the "victims" have - of simply "living on their knees" in conformity, yet one they don't take, mandating "Damage, Inc."'s intervention, and paint a picture of quite literally pummelling someone to death. Seems to make a lot of sense. "A call for non-conformity"... hah! More like "try your best, sweetheart, and we'll beat the living daylights out of ya." |

From what I read here, the narrator is a drug addict ("It's the chemical way to serenity"; "You're the antidote for solitude injected in my veins"), far beyond the point of no return, which he openly admits ("I walk alone / On the path of self-extinction"). It appears he's lost his faith, which probably led him to seek consolation in drugs, and he seems to blame society for that. We're given no evidence to conclude whether that's the case, however (unless the songs in the album are all linked in this "loose story" I've been hearing about, but haven't yet explored; and evidence is present in the other ones). In the end, though, this is the confession of a broken man, a cry for help from someone who's lost all hope. Also happens to be my favourite song in this album. Should really look at the other lyrics in-depth, though... |

My opinion is not connected to mythology, though. I think it's metaphorical and that the speaker was an agent of some sort, who was caught in an "avalanche" by his enemies. The offer he could not refuse is, IMHO, to become a double agent for them, because they hold something dear to him (?). So he "steals souls" from his own agency - maybe killing operatives or sending the Enemy secure data, to buy more time for his life, or they will kill him. Of course, my interpretation leaves the second half of the song mostly untranslated and it's probably not true... But that was just my impression when I read the lyrics. |
