I didn't read each interpretation before but here is my take. I think the lyrics tell story about a young man who already had this girl and they're meant to be. Thing is, he only knew the chase and actually crippled to be on a relationship. Either he had trust issues or were afraid to let himself to really fall for someone since it would make him vulnerable. That is why he only kept the superficial connection from 'out on the street' |

This is how I picture the song based on the situation I've had ever been into. There is a girl and a guy. The guy is in that popular lot while the girl is cool in her own way. Her quirks charmed him but he was hesitated to bet his reputation. While the girl has realized his feeling for her, she confused what has gotten into him cause he was so genuine when they were talking just together but acting the other way around people - representable on the lines 'It's not a secret. Why do you keep it? I'm just sitting on the shelf'
My suggestion, just leave him. He's not worthwhile. At least, for the present : P |

I always think I hear "I try so hard and God so far." And thus, I interpret the song as someone who's on his spiritual journey to fight for what he believed in. He scared he had lost his faith and tried so hard to have them back. But eventually God is always within his own self.
