Rule My World Lyrics
You set yourself above
Better off forgiving god
You claim that you believe in
Your kind is gonna fall
Your ship is sinking fast
And all your able men are leaving
Only someone
Who's morally
Superior can possibly
And honestly deserve
To rule my world
I talk before I think
You shoot before you know
Who's in your line of fire
So somehow we're the same
We're causing people pain
But I stand and take the blame
You scramble to deny it
Only someone
Who's morally
Superior can possibly
And honestly deserve
Only someone
Who's morally
Superior can possibly
And honestly deserve
To rule my world [x10]
Explain me one more time
When they kill it's a crime
When you kill it is justice
Better off forgiving god
You claim that you believe in
Your kind is gonna fall
Your ship is sinking fast
And all your able men are leaving
Who's morally
Superior can possibly
And honestly deserve
To rule my world
You shoot before you know
Who's in your line of fire
So somehow we're the same
We're causing people pain
But I stand and take the blame
You scramble to deny it
Who's morally
Superior can possibly
And honestly deserve
Only someone
Who's morally
Superior can possibly
And honestly deserve
When they kill it's a crime
When you kill it is justice

Whoa. They're totally underappreciated here. Well, I think most of their lyrics are actually satire. For the first time you may be swooned by their catchy guitar plays or "the two soft voices blended in perfection" . But if you listen more carefully you may find their bitterness.
Not just George Bush -- but the United States generally. Who else but the United States has purported to "rule the world"? "I talk before I think" -- probably a reference to Europe and its tendency to criticize, sometimes indiscriminately. "You shoot before you know who's in your line of fire" -- perhaps a reference to the U.S. and its indiscriminate bombings, its drone strikes, killing civilians. The song ends: "Explain to me one more time/When they kill it's a crime/When you kill it is justice." This could be interpreted as criticism of warfare, or, perhaps, of capital punishment in the United States.
You scramble to deny it*
Explain to me one more time*
The first correction is right, but they actually do say "explain me". It might have something to do with taking Norwegian into English; "explain to me" is "forklare meg" in Norwegian. If you literally translate the Norwegian to English, it'd be "explain me".

hhumbert: At first thought I said to myself no way, but after taking another look, I could definitely see that as a possibility, given the opening and closing lines specifically. Open to interp. I guess.
"You set yourself above that all forgiving god you claim that you believe in your kind is gonna fall your ship is sinking fast and all your able men are leaving"
"Explain to me one more time when they kill it's a crime when you kill it is justice"
It is obvious what this song is about to me, but my wife doesn't agree. My interpretation of it is that the song is very critical about George W. Bush. To me, it's very darn clear. Thoughts?
Yes, I agree. I actually came here only to see if anyone else shared this view. Given the obvious initial references to god, it is about someone religious or who uses religion as justification for something. Could be any religious zealot, but the song alludes to someone who is in a position of power. So you can think he's talking about the pope, but as killing is mentioned and the church hasn't set out to (at least openly) kill anyone for quite some time, now, it becomes clear he's talking about someone who commands a military force.

So, in 2009,...
So, in 2009, a decadent ("your kind is gonna fall / your ship is sinking fast / and all your able men are leaving") religious ("You set yourself above / that all forgiving god / you claim that you believe in"), warmonger ("You shoot before you know / who's in your line of fire" and "when they kill it's a crime / when you kill it is justice") in a position of power ("can possibly / and honestly deserve / to rule my world").
It's Bush. I actually conceive no other possible interpretation, after quite some though.
