I think the obvious interpretation is that the narrator is a necrophiliac. Whether he kills them or not is pretty ambiguous but he's definitely performing sexual acts on a corpse. |

Nah man, in order to prepare for the album Devin stopped taking his Bipolar medication. That is some serious dedication to one's craft. |

| Necrophagist – Stabwound Lyrics

What? How can a "symbolic stabwound" refer to death? Even so, this album presents a much more mature style of song writing than the one that is found on Onset of Putrefaction. The songs aren't all just about ridiculous and grotesque subjects.
The song really is pretty self explanatory. There is no way to protect yourself from people you trust stabbing you in the back unless you trust no one. |

Well Les is certainly not a vegetarian so I doubt the song is vegetarianism. However, over-consumption and the American tradition of exporting our culture onto others are explored in this song. |

The Metallica hate here is expected. Covers are rarely ever accepted by fans of the original. Anyhow, both the original and Metallica's cover are awesome. |

It appears as though Paranoid Schizophrenia plays a role in the flattening of emotions of this individual.
Such a brutally awesome song. |

Alright, well, I read that the singer stated it was about a gunman in a school shooting. That's fine, but the lyrics still don't really support that except for two lines.
Regardless of the meaning, the song kicks ass. |

I'm pretty sure Ride the Lightning is about execution via electric chair. Also, Fade to Black was written after James' equipment was stolen.

I think a pretty good number of songs in Alien deal with Dev's inner-battles and I think this is one of them. Even the title of the album can reference the feeling of an alien presence in his mind at times. |

I can't believe that this has to be pointed out in every song from Alien: Dev was off his meds at the time so that certainly affected the songs. Just because it seems like it could be a fight between two partners, it could very well be a fight with himself. I'm not denying the "obvious" meaning here of a fight between two people, but one shouldn't be so quick to call people retarded just because they see the song in a different light.
With that being said, the energy this song packs is incredibly intense and it makes for one hell of an experience to listen to. |

| Mastodon – Sleeping Giant Lyrics

You have to stretch the song quite a bit to fit into that interpretation, anon. The Protagonist of Blood Mountain encounters a sleeping giant during his quest and the song describes the surroundings and the encounter itself.
I think it's also very important to keep in mind that the members of Mastodon partake in some mind-altering substances when writing their albums, so not all the lyrics are going to mesh together coherently. |

Shut the fuck up when you don't know what you're talking about. It's not like everyone who has Bipolar Disorder acts the same way. It comes in varying degrees of severity like anything else. Devin may have a little more control over it than others and can recognize what it does to him while he is off his meds so he can effectively write about it. |

| Demons and Wizards – Fiddler On The Green Lyrics

I love this song. For the longest time I looked over it and didn't really give it a fair listen.
Most of the above posters have done a very nice job analyzing the song and coming up with a good meaning. Death desires to take the life of a girl in order to keep the boy, whose life he wrongfully took, company. Whether or not the girl dies is never certain, but that is most likely the case given the somber tone the first stanza sets up for the rest of the song. It really is beautiful. |

The album art would like to have a word with you. Clearly Death is on a field playing a fiddle to two small children sitting around a fire. Whether or not "the Fiddler's Green" has anything to do with Death is irrelevant; the song is about Death taking a boy before his time. St. Peter, in Christian mythology, is not the figure that takes souls. He is there to let them in. |

This is quite different than what I'm used to from Devin. This song really displays Devin's ability to incorporate his very recognizable sound that has been established with SYL and his previous work with softer, more pop-like sounds (especially toward the end). I really enjoy it.
Also, what Bruce said makes perfect sense. |

"Sooner or later the nights with the Satyr
Will bring back the memory
Leaving you money and time"
This stanza is also in Devin's solo album "Ziltoid the Omniscient" in the song Color Your World. I thought I would just point out that cool little tidbit.

He never mentioned "lyrics" in that quote, just the music itself. The drumming and guitar work are not very complex or technical as opposed to other prog. rock/metal bands. |

The beauty of truly great songwriting is that anyone can interpret it any way they wish to. What the songwriter envisioned when he wrote these lyrics does not have to match what the listener interprets the lyrics to be. In current music I think Steve Wilson and Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth) are masters of this craft.
I see it as being a song about two people who are not in love but just have sex and this is eating away at the speaker's heart. |

I'm all about letting people interpret songs the way they want to; however, this interpretation is way off as it doesn't make sense. It's definitely about a relationship with another person that the speaker thought was more intimate but it turned out he or she was way off. Just listen to some of the other songs off Deadwing and you'll see similar themes. |

This is becoming my favorite song from Leviathan. This song is about Moby Dick and the myth that surrounds it as well as the idea that the Fiji Mermaid (the supposedly grotesque half-mammal, half-fish creature) is in cahoots with it. |

There's nothing illogical about it. It's perfectly illogical. The song is all about "declaring war" on things that are useless or harmful while simultaneously satirizing the concept of declaring war on things. It's actually a pretty brilliant song.
The "War on Drugs" is a complete waste of time and money. |

This song is NOT about a god damn school shooting. Watch the music video; read the lyrics other than the last stanza. It simply details some of the horrors soldiers have to go through. You have to really skew this to get that this is the mind of someone who shoots up a school.
"I am the one / Camouflage and guns / Risk my life / to keep my people from harm" - Is this what goes on through the mind of someone who shoots up a school? I think not.
"Stay the Course / Reasonable Force" - Famous mantra from the Bush administration
"I believe I serve a greater good" - thoughts of a soldier
"But I'm just doing what I'm told..." - soldier having to follow questionable orders
