| Tori Amos – Ireland Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I thought that maybe it would've grown off of my by now but no.. It's been years since it came out and I still love it :0. it's not that I'm into her easy listening music - not at all - I couldn't stand much of The Beekeeper, and I could only listen to AATS once (barely even that). Boys for Pele is my favourite Tori album, one of the only albums I can truly say I love. I just love this song so much, even despite the lyrics. does that make me strange? am I really the only one? | |

| oh come on, don't thumb me down. I love Creep too, I'm just saying it's a shame it gets so much more attention than Radiohead's much better songs | |

| Regina Spektor – One More Time with Feeling Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| hmmmmm I think the album version (and the album itself) is FANTASTIC. but that's just me | |
| Radiohead – Idioteque Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
I don't think it's meaningless. Thom took lines he'd already written and pulled them out of a hat for inspiration. I seriously doubt that someone as perfectionistic as Thom Yorke wouldn't edit the results of this hat-lyric experiment. and even if he didn't, I think this song is amazingly apt. if it had no meaning/made no sense at all, he wouldn't sing it with such passion. |

| Regina Spektor – Ave Maria Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I think it's about a boy who has moved to/is living in a place where he doesn't quite fit in, thins are a bit alien to him, maybe he is an immigrant or a student. he has to work in an office and doesn't enjoy it, but doesn't complain. the intellectuals live in their own heads, don't even pay any attention to the sun or moon, just those artificial lights. I think maybe he is fascinated by the Christians despite his own family's tradition ('how many times..?') (I am pretty sure that the cellar = church? the roots growing up through the floor, a sort of history) and he finds beauty there, just like listening to the birds instead of the language tapes when he's on the train. but, the 'lit by a light that isn't even the sun' could also mean a sort of inner light and maybe that is what fascinates him, he wants to feel that too, sings 'ave maria' like a prayer. I am probably completely off, oh well. this is such a magnificent song, why has it not made it onto any of her albums yet? I guess the demo is the definitive version really, I love her whistling at the end <3 | |
| R.E.M. – Tongue Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
except I think "ugly girls" = people in general with no standards they just want to get laid, one night stands or whatever and she finds out that that's not really what she wants, she cringes, looking for a fire escape because the experience is so awful but the music is so sweet. weird juxtaposition |

the live versions of this song are soo great, it's incredibly underrated because everyone seems to hate Pablo Honey by default (why??).. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vbZ73q4oew there's also an acoustic version that is so so beautiful http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CnCWAncnwE and yeah, I'd say it's about obsession and blind faith, and how it's driven by fear |

the sample at the very end of the song sounds very much like one used on The Eraser, in fact I think it might be the exact same one and I love the way Thom sings 'mafia geeks' hehehe |

| Radiohead – Climbing Up the Walls Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
the citizeninsane website has the lyrics (and a live recording, which sounds almost like the one on the album) from a very early version (the first ever I think?) of this song posted: "I am the key to the lock in the dress that keeps your toys in the basement and if you get too far inside you'll only see my reflection I am her face when she sleeps tonight I am the smell of a fear do not cry out or make a sound we are friends till we die and either way you turn, I'll be there open up your skull, I'll be there climbing up the walls it's always best when the light is off it's always better on the outside it's in the crack of your waiting smile fifteen blows to your mind so lock the kids up safe tonight and shut the eyes in the cupboard I am the smell of a local man who gets the loneliest feeling and either way he turns, I'll be there open up your skull, I'll be there climbing up the walls climbing up the walls climbing up the walls" (and on the same page it says that they recorded the album version while it was hailing outside. I just find that kind of neat to know) but everything that needs to be said has been already so I don't have much to add.. it is the stuff of nightmares (literally) and I'm not really sure how anyone can hear it as 'sexy'. :| I could easily be way off, but I think it's about people who are so paranoid that it drives them mad. but I tend to overanalyze these songs (sorry) so I'll stop now. I really love the epic strings and electronic noises near the end, imo that last 10 seconds or so sums up the overall mood of OK Computer amazingly well |

| Radiohead – Myxomatosis. (Judge, Jury, & Executioner.) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| whoa whoa..ok I had to come back to clarify: I don't think live shows are insane. what I was trying to get at is mob mentality or something, I was going to relate it to the song but I lost my train of thought.. and it was stating the obvious, anyway. | |
| Radiohead – I Might Be Wrong Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
I think it is about life in general and rebirth, over and over and over; reincarnation. Or at least the afterlife. Amnesiac has this undercurrent of ancient history and afterlife mythology running through it: ideas from Ancient Egypt, Classical mythology, Gnostic Christianity, Buddhism/Hinduism too.. for instance the concept of "samsara" makes a lot of sense in this context. "Samsara is derived from "to flow together," to go or pass through states, to wander.. a great revolving door between life and death and an endless cycle of reincarnation." (a surprisingly poetic description from wikipedia :p) the 'waterfall' is the river of life, maybe the very same river that appears in Pyramid Song. in Classical Mythology this river was called Lethe, the River of Forgetfulness ('amnesiac', anyone?) and Lethe appears in Dante's Divine Comedy as well, whose work his lyrics have referenced so often. the image of the famished road in Street Spirit is the same sort of thing, only more pessimistic (everything fading out and being devoured, rather than the potential of eventually escaping that this song alludes to) "What would I do.. if I did not have you?" I think is meant to be taken literally. what would this person do if they had no one, and if love itself did not exist? It would be much easier to think of the world as meaningless if we did not feel love. 'nothing at all' to me personally sounds like denial.. rather than feeling and 'looking back' you lapse back into a kind of self-preserving amnesia, never looking back or reflecting but enjoying the moment only. you protect yourself from ever being hurt by telling yourself that it's 'nothing at all', yet if you write off and shut out the world around you you have no hope of understanding it. so I feel that 'nothing at all' is very sarcastic. but who knows. am I reading too much into it? |

| Radiohead – Myxomatosis. (Judge, Jury, & Executioner.) Lyrics | 16 years ago |

If this is of any use, the Cristian Vogel remix of this song (Remyxomatosis, on the Com-Lag EP) starts with a sample of a cheering crowd. A harsh electronic bleeping noise drowns it out, and the song starts. Apparently the remix is much closer to Thom's electronic demo of the song than the version that ended up on HTTT. I agree with earlier posts, though, this is definitely about the attempt to control minds/public opinion and uses myxomatosis as a metaphor. the deliberate introduction of a terrible, painful disease is used in certain countries in order to control the rabbit population (in another sense, of course).. it doesn't matter how much suffering and pain it causes the rabbits (it's an awful way to go), it is convenient and works best so they use it. the character in the song has had his own words twisted and the meaning turned on its head, and begins to doubt his own judgment. how do you respond to something so illogical? it is as though he forgets the true meaning of his older statement because he is bombarded with the new, twisted meaning. and if you can't trust your own judgment, what can you trust? it's the disease of self-destructive doubt. disturbing stuff. and I don't know how relevant this is, but I saw them last summer and I have to admit it: these massive live shows are to some degree insane. If this song is at least partially about fear of those crowds (or all and any massive, charged crowds), I can't blame them. how do you connect with tens of thousands of excited and screaming people all at once? I mean, I've never tried.. observed objectively a crowd *does* seem to twitch, salivate, cheer and wave almost mindlessly, and you can get caught up in it easily (goes for any group of that size).. and sometimes actual fans are beaten up by people who just came to trip out on whatever drug and feed off of the hype and hysteria. I am still so grateful that I got to see them live, don't get me wrong, and it was incredible. I just can't deny that the audience experience overall was a little bit unnerving at times - not so much the people in it as the size and confusion. |

| Regina Spektor – Pavlov's Daughter Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
This is amazing! I love the Lucille = Lucifer interpretation, except I think "Lucille" is her own subconscious, watching her, judging her, and she can see herself from the outside, how she's driven by these built-in desires, placed by .. God? who knows what? the ocean, forever, it's in our nature, everyone's 'Pavlovian', even Pavlov himself.. we are all driven by the same unconscious force and when the "bell" rings, we can't help responding, but we also have the ability to wonder why.. Whatever happened to this Regina, by the way? She can create something like this but then she goes and writes something like "That Time"?? Regina.. you're incredibly talented.. let it all out! oh.. and she DOES sound like Tori Amos (it's almost uncanny) when she sings "Paaavlov's daughter" and the Babylon bit, you can definitely hear the PJ Harvey. there's a lot of Regina too but you can hear her influences here |

anyone else think that the background effects sound kind of like breathing? I kind of feel like this song is trying to get us to pay more attention to the power of our thoughts; contemplation of suicide is 'just a thought', just a little blip in your mind at first but a hugely powerful one. if you're depressed enough you might run away with it, it could destroy your life.. but all he wants is understanding and affection, it is as it is, and he is fine..he's just confessing to having felt these despairing thoughts, and everyone has had these thoughts at least once .. it's human |

| Gnarls Barkley – Going On Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Oh, maybe I should make it clear that I think that this song is not about suicide, and I feel horrible for making it sound like I was speculating about Cee-lo .. It's just very intense and it seems like it came from a place of great pain and transformed into this epic song about growth + transcendence and overcoming the paralyzing fear of the unknown. | |
| Gnarls Barkley – Going On Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I wonder if Cee-lo was suicidal when he wrote this or at least when he started to write it, it is so heartfelt. That 'don't follow me' at the end caught me by surprise today, I don't hear too well out my right ear, I accidentally put my right earbud into my left ear today and it caught me totally off guard. I thought it was just present in the music video. Hearing it changed how I see this song. I definitely agree with those who see it as someone moving ahead of another to face the unknown, choosing to brave uncertainty and even face death if necessary. Don't follow me until you are ready too.. I have faith in your ability to overcome and transcend all that is causing you pain, but I have to go this one alone. And so do you. I love the music video made for this song, it's so great.. I wish Youtube would stop deleting videos so I could see it again |
