Lightning Strikes the Postman Lyrics

I got your letter
It had turned to sand
Lighting strikes the postman in his hand
I hope that you remember
The things you had to say
It's just a supernatural delay

I got your package
It was all a mess
Lightning strikes the postman in his chest
I hope that you remember
The things you had to say
It's just a supernatural delay

I sent you a postcard and I hope you're fine
But lightning strikes the postman all the time
I couldn't really think of anything to say
It's just a supernatural delay
And it's hard to read the writing through the flames

I don't think that any flaming lips songs are jibberish at all, unlike a lot of the people who submit entries on this website! I think Wayne is an incredibly intelligent guy who has gone through a lot of changes. I think that this song is probably about how somtimes things are just out of our hands, no matter how hard we try to force them. So basically it's about fate. Some things are supposed to happen, and in this case, some aren't

at first i thought it's just thinking up weird excuses for not keeping in touch but come to think of it..

The song is about two people struggling to get closer to each other but unable to do so due to strong emotions (lightning, flames) that make them unable to communicate effectively. This emotion affects both sides: 1. the talker/sender (lightning strikes the postman) produces gibberish wrongly interpreted by the listener/receiver (in the first two verses it is the other person, in the third one it's the singer who fails to send a desired message) 2. the listener/receiver cannot read the message due to the flames inside him or her. This situation creates artificial distance between the two participants - thus the mail metaphor. Nevertheless, hope of happy ending is expressed throughout the song (I hope that you remember the things you had to say, It's just a supernatural delay), probably based on understanding, how hard time the other parson might have due to one's own experience (lightning strikes all the time, I couldn't really think of anything to say). I don't know if it is what author intended to say, but this is the meanong I got almost instantly after reading the lyrics, because I personally always feel like struck by a lightning when I'm face to face with a girl I like, and while I can operate normally and confidently discussing other things, I have hard time expressing my feelings, and also I'm unsure if I'm reading hers correctly, cause I feel hot inside. I think it's by far not just my experience. And I think the song is beautiful.

The image of this poor mailman getting struck by lightning all the time and having to deliver sacks of burnt, smoldering mail is hillarious, but I think there is a point, albeit a humorously exaggerated one, about struggling to keep in communication with someone over long distances.

I disagree i think its someone writing to someone who doesn't want to talk to them and every time they don't reply he just makes up an excuse ""Lightning must have struck the postman" instead of dealing with it and moving on!

The end lines of, "I couldn't really think of anything to say", and how lightning strikes the postman, "all the time", almost suggests a 'why even bother' type attitude, to me. Fucking awesome song. The whole Clouds Taste Metallic LP is phenominal. I think it's the absolute peak of their old sound, and Wayne's song writing really starts to take off from this album on, (not saying his music prior to this album wasn't good). Definatly my favorite LP by the Lips, and way up there on my all time favorite list. "Postman" and "Fetus" I believe are the nucleus of the LP, they just blow me away!
