Wow, having been there, this song hits you right in the gut. Great song.
A lot of his songs seem to suggest some kind of mental unbalance. This is one of them. It’s a good song. I like it. It just hit me that Crazy, Smiley Faces and Just a thought all have hints of madness in them.

i've felt like this before but i think everybody should've once or so, cos if you havent i dont think you've made any progress in your life. if that sounds mean im sorry but thats what i think
Definitely my favorite song from St. Elsewhere. Our society places a great stigma on not only the act of suicide but also the mere mention of it as well. But the fact is you don’t have to be mentally unbalanced or have any kind of psychological disorder to think about it. I’d be willing to bet that 98% of perfectly healthy, fully functioning people have thought about it at least once in their lifetime. At the end of the day, it’s just a thought.

This song is simply about life, nothing complicated at all. In our daily lives, we lie, creating beautiful partialistic (my word) stories where the main character (who happens to be you) is for "good" and against "bad". This is us.
Hmm I wonder what part of the references to being lost, putting a gun to his head, being dark in the daytime, "great depression", trying everything except for suicide to cure his depression and even then it's crossing his mind. I wonder what part of this is considered mild depresion? The just a thought part is him trying to shrug it off and make it seem less significant than it really is. The "but i'm fine" part doesn't sound too convincing and is probably meant to sound like that.
I think the guy can't connect to society and adopt it's superficial ways. This leaves him seeking answers in the wrong way and mentally unstable.

That's my favorite line, always makes me laugh. This is obvioulsy just about someone hitting rock-bottom.
