| A few people have said they expected more out of this song, but I think the complexity and real passion in the song comes from the guitar work. To me that says almost more than the lyrics do. And don't get me wrong, I'm a total lyrics person, but in this song, the guitar speaks more about what the song is about rather than what the lyrics say. I understand what the meaning of the song as a whole is, and it's opposite of what I said above, but I was going through something at the time that made me feel that just those few lines meant something different. Now that I'm past what had happened, I look at the song as Gavin meant it. I just read into those few lines differently because it related with what I was going through. |

| I love this song because I think it can be interpreted differently depending on your own experiences. For me, this song means a lot. I had a best friend about two years ago who meant the world to me. We did everything together. We were inseperable. I knew he had feelings for me, but we got past that and just did the best friend thing. Then I met someone who I started dating. To make a long story short I hurt my best friend quite a bit and I regret letting him go. Recently the other guy and I broke up. My old best friend and I started talking again, but it's not the same. I just want a second chance to prove that I was wrong and that he's the one person I really need in my life. | |

I can't believe there's only one comment on this song. It's amazing. I think it's about a girl wanting to be a big part of a boy's life. She wants to be painted into his sunshine, or in other words, his brightest, happiest, most cherished thing. They'll always have eachother as eachother's sunshine, that's what the "one day the world will grow colder" verse means. Just my take on it =) |

This song is amazing. Just because of personal experience, I interpret this song to be about a girl who's best friend(a man) is in love with her, but she's been with a different man who's treating her wrong. He's being the best friend he can be and he's pleading with him to just leave her alone because it's hurting her to be with him, although she may not realize it. That's just one of the many ways you can take this song. Dave Barnes is an extremely talented lyricist. |

I don't like to think of this song as cheating. The part that says "When I left, I should have known better" makes me think differently. I know he says it's about cheating, but I think it's about how he was with a girl, and when their relationship ended, his best friend started dating her, which ended their friendship. I just don't like songs about cheating =) Anyway, I saw Amos last night in concert. I'm pretty sure it was the most amazing concert I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of concerts. |

I'm so glad John Mayer did this cover. Tom Petty's version has such a bad image because most of his other songs reference drugs. Well, personally, I like to believe this song has nothing at all to do with drugs. I think of it as a boy leaving a girl, and he doesn't feel guilty for leaving her. "I'm a bad boy cause I don't even miss her. I'm a bad boy for breaking her heart" That's just the way I like to think of it. Forget all the drug references, it could mean a million other things. =) |

I'm in a situation right now where my (ex)boyfriend and I can't be together, even though we want to more than anything. I completely relate to this because everytime I see a happy couple I either want them to break up(out of jealousy) or I want them to realize what they have, because I can't have it. I think kdiddy33 hit it right on. I just heard the song for the first time today, but it really hit me hard. I was trying to figure out what it could possibly mean. I knew it was about getting over someone, but I didn't know if it was directed towards the person she's getting over or not. It makes so much sense that it's directed towards herself. I love this song now, even though I don't care much for her voice, but the lyrics are quite amazing. |

Everytime i hear the chorus, "Tonight, you arrested my mind When you came to my defense With a knife in the shape of your mouth In the form of your body With the wrath of a god Oh, you stood by me" I can't help but think that someone's hurting him. The persons mouth was in the shape of a knife, in the form of the persons body. I take that as him being hurt by words. It doesn't make sense with the rest of the song, but I like to believe that's what that one part means. |
