Dancin' Shoes Lyrics
Its so nice to see you
Can we sit and talk for awhile
I can searched forever
I can't imagine anything better
Kids up on the stairway
Couples on the sidewalk squares
If I get your heart soon
I'll call a perfect afternoon
Won't you call my number
Don't push, but don't hesitate
Wake me from this slumber
Rush me, but need time to wake
Checkmate on my shoulder
I'm tired of this win or lose
Well I'm no knight in shinning armor
But I'm no pair of dancin' shoes
I'm no pair of dancin' shoes
My patience ran away
Take me with you
You keep me holding on
Nothing's understood
You're so confusing
Tell it to me straight
Won't you call my number
Don't push, but don't hesitate
Wake me from this slumber
Rush me, but need time to wake
I got nothin' left to lose
But I'm no pair of dancin' shoes
I got nothin' left to lose
But I'm no pair of dancin' shoes
I got nothin' left to lose
But I'm no pair of dancin' shoes
I got nothin' left to lose
But I'm no pair of dancin' shoes
Can we sit and talk for awhile
I can searched forever
I can't imagine anything better
Couples on the sidewalk squares
If I get your heart soon
I'll call a perfect afternoon
Don't push, but don't hesitate
Wake me from this slumber
Rush me, but need time to wake

Well I'm no knight in shinning armor
But I'm no pair of dancin' shoes
I'm no pair of dancin' shoes
Take me with you

I think what he's trying to say is that he's not anything special. He's not a hero and he's not going to sweep her off of her feet. He's tired of the "win or lose" of playing all of these different roles. He wants this girl to know that even though he's not a knight in shining armor or a pair of dancing shoes, he's still got a lot to give. He wants her to love him for just being himself. (Or at least that's what I got out of it)
I'm hung up on the symbolic value of the dancing shoes too. I agree with the above commenters who argue that the man isn't just some short-lived hobby to pick up and drop at the girl's leisure-- a pair of dancin' shoes. He wants the whole picture, but she only takes him for test drives-- dances for a song or two, then takes the shoes off. I think there is a definite play on the phrase "walked all over." He doesn't want to be exhausted by the dance of their relationship if that's all it is-- ephemeral, for her enjoyment, and disingenuous.
I think Degraw is trying to say girls (or maybe just a girl) need to relax their expectations for a relationship, and just let it happen naturally. Just because a relationship isn't everything a girl dreamed of, doesn't mean it's not worth it.
A relationship isn't a fairy tale ("I'm no knight in shining armor"), and it's not a place for a girl to find some guy to fill her every need and be her dormat ("I'm no pair of dancing shoes").
Really he's saying, don't over think this. Just live it. "Don't push, but don't hesitate".
When he says "I got nothing left to lose, but I'm no pair of dancing shoes", I think he's really just driving it home - I'm not Prince Charming. I don't have it all and just because I'm imperfect doesn't mean I'm going to let you walk all over me.
Still, he really likes her. She just needs to chill and be happy and love the one she's with, so to speak.
i listened to this song today, and what i got out of it is that he is saying that he loves this girl, and he is willing to do anything for her. He wants them to be in this relationship, but she is putting it off. I think that he is basically saying that although he is not perfect, and he has nothing left to lose, he doesn't want to be used for some kind of personal gain on the girls part, like a pair of dancing shoes which get used often.

To be very honest, I love this song yet I am not completely sure what Gavin is trying to say here. I know he is telling a girl that he cares for her and that it would make his day to just sit and talk to her and get into her heart. However, what is the symbolism in the actual dancing shoes? If you know... I'd love to hear it.
This song is about someone who really like another person, but the other person is playing games with them. The person is asking who they like to take that next step and stop playing games with them. "Won't you call my number, Don't push, but don't hesitate" that's saying like call my number either literally on the telephone, or like calling a number in line, because it's his time to have this girl. Dancing shoes is referring to the fact that he's tired of being involved in this tap dance relationship. Like, he really really wants to be here, but he's not there for her just to use for fun, hence dancing shoes. One of gavin's best
I agree with boops04. I take the "won't you call my number" part literally. It's his turn to be with her and he's sick of the games. This song really is one of Gavin's best. I can't get enough of it. Probably because I can relate =P

i think that "I'm no pair of dancing shoes" means that he is not available just when she needs him. when he wants to have fun and then she can put him in a closet..

I agree with the below comments. It's about a guy who feels like a girl's being hot and cold and he's tired of the games. He wants her to be real and fess up to what they are. He's tired of her playing around cause he's feelings all genuine things for her.
