this song is about a man who was with a woman he really loved, but she cheated on him with or left him for his best friend. the song is directed to the best friend, and is about his remorse about losing the friend as well as the girlfriend. he's saying he should've known, and that he hopes it was worth it in the friend's mind.

The song is more about the loss of his relationship with his friend than it is the relationship with the girlfriend. He talks about how his friendship was closer than friends but "more like a brother". He speaks on the intentional decpetion leaving the friend "no room left to defend". He understands the type of person his friend was but assumed he wouldn't betray him in such a way. Not only did the realtionship with the woman dissolve but also their friendship and in turn the relationship the friend had with the woman. It also seems that there is a bit of hurt in the fact that the friend placed the woman in the middle, or the it could have been that the whole need to get her was a game to the friend because of the end of the song "how could you be so careless with her heart".
I don't like to think of this song as cheating. The part that says "When I left, I should have known better" makes me think differently. I know he says it's about cheating, but I think it's about how he was with a girl, and when their relationship ended, his best friend started dating her, which ended their friendship. I just don't like songs about cheating =) Anyway, I saw Amos last night in concert. I'm pretty sure it was the most amazing concert I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of concerts.
