Tennessee Ernie Ford – Sixteen Tons Lyrics | 5 years ago |
I should clarify that I'm sure many of the workers did resent the system and struggled to achieve better work and life conditions, but I doubt many were inclined to attack those above them. They weren't trying to completely tear down the social structure that allowed them to at least survive. They were far more likely to fight among themselves, and I think this is the sentiment of that verse. |
Tennessee Ernie Ford – Sixteen Tons Lyrics | 5 years ago |
He's a tough man who claims to have been in a lot of fights and won most or all of them. He has no interaction with the upper class and I doubt he wants any. He was born poor and it's all he knows. I don't think he faults anyone specifically for his position in life and he takes pride in his strength, toughness, and perseverance under the conditions he was born into. Any nation of working class people that didn't take pride in themselves and the system they lived under would have been overpowered by their neighbors in the period up to at least the end of World War 2. It wasn't in their interest to fight the system. None of them had any expectation of wealth nor would they have been regularly exposed to any common display of it, so I doubt many had serious resentment toward it. They probably still expected life to be somewhat "nasty, brutish, and short". |
Kaiser Chiefs – Never Miss a Beat Lyrics | 6 years ago |
This song is about kids with street smarts. They play dumb to avoid conflict, so they don't have to spend much time explaining their views to those who don't understand their point of view and would criticize them for it. The third stanza is my favorite. They know that they can't get in trouble with the police unless they admit to something or someone testifies against them. So they're safe as long as they all keep their mouths shut. |
Against Me! – Miami Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Well said. Great summary. |
Against Me! – FuckMyLife666 Lyrics | 10 years ago |
I love how this opens. These lines say so much about Laura's love and admiration for Heather. "The ease of your pose, the grace of your silhouette The way that your shoulders meet your slender neck . . . I don't have the heart to match the one pricked into your finger" I know nothing about Heather beyond some online photos, but she does come across as a beautiful soul to me. The expressions on her face seem so honest. Maybe I'm just projecting Laura's feelings onto her image. She did a good job of describing how much Heather means to her with this song. This is another part that really gets me: "Never wanna say that we grew apart And never wanna say that the feelings changed" She knows the value of these emotional bonds and wants to work to maintain them, even though profound changes in their relationship are inevitable. |
Against Me! – Black Me Out Lyrics | 10 years ago |
But why would she want to "chop those brass rings off" his "fat fucking fingers"? Did he ever wear cheap rings or have fat fingers? To me, it sounds like her anger is directed at a business-type person. Those are the sort of people who would think that Tom owed them something. I love that line, by the way. |
Against Me! – Dead Friend Lyrics | 10 years ago |
I thought that might be the case the first couple times I heard this song. But the deceased in this one seems to be a guy, based on the line: "They shaved your face and they washed your hair clean". 'Because of the Shame' was about a girl. It sounds like the female character in this song is still alive and was either the lover, or just a good friend of the guy who died and who didn't realize how much she loved him until he was gone. |
The Alan Parsons Project – Eye In The Sky Lyrics | 10 years ago |
He's now in control and could use that power to fuck her over if he likes. |
The Alan Parsons Project – Eye In The Sky Lyrics | 10 years ago |
He has completely figured her out and now has a feeling of omniscience with respect to her. He's ending the relationship and is reading her body language, expressions, and behavior rather than believing any of the words that are coming out of her mouth. She's becoming very upset while he's staying calm and detached. I like this part: Believe me The sun in your Eyes Made some of the lies worth believing He enjoyed a lot of the moments with her, and obviously found her to be quite beautiful, but he's completely done with her now. |
Lana Del Rey – Video Games Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Interesting, but I can't make this line work under that concept: "Watching all our friends fall In and out of Old Paul's" |
Skydiggers – You've Got a Lot of Nerve Lyrics | 11 years ago |
"Well I spit up and then they lie back down" This line appears to indicate that the song is from the perspective of Janie's child. The one who has "got a lot of nerve" is probably the father, possibly just a boyfriend. The song is written by Andrew Cash, whose brother Peter played guitar on this album and sang a few of the songs, including this one (along with Andy Maize). I have no idea if this song is autobiographical in any way. "She sits up and you come to her With moistened lips Your face is dry but your fingers drip" This part may indicate drug use on the part of the father/boyfriend. Amphetamines or cocaine, maybe? |
Fleetwood Mac – Gypsy Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Interesting interpretation, canda. Is there some way to block comments from dudeness88? Or, preferably, some way I can contribute to getting the comment deleted and the user banned? This site is generally pretty good for intelligent discussion, but it doesn't take many comments from users with either social or brain development problems to bring a forum down to Youtube levels of discourse. No offense intended toward dudeness88. It's not his fault that he was born or raised into those conditions. |
The Raveonettes – Black Satin Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I've always just seen it as an ironic surf song. Surf rock is always about having fun in the sun surfing, but this turns it around and highlights the negatives instead. She doesn't tan well, she's not good at surfing, she doesn't like swimming in the cold water, and she prefers the night. Probably my favorite song on the album. Like most of the album, this song sounds great with a serious car stereo. The heavy bass line and distorted guitar are a powerful blend, just like with Aly, Walk With Me. |
Wintersleep – Oblivion Lyrics | 13 years ago |
We try to be oblivious to the conditions of our world to avoid thinking about or dealing with serious issues. |
Wintersleep – Search Party Lyrics | 13 years ago |
He's depressed and has lost motivation to contribute anything to this world or to himself. He wonders if he can ever get that back, what that will take, and whether it will matter in the end. |
Wintersleep – Dead Letter & The Infinite Yes Lyrics | 13 years ago |
He seems to be expressing disappointment in elements of his physical existence, both internal and external, and is also thinking beyond it. Global warming could be one of the side effects of our existence, but I don't think this song focuses on any single one. We are already destroying ourselves along with our environment through various forms of pollution in far more direct and dangerous ways than global warming anyway. |
Wintersleep – Drunk On Aluminium Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I think he's describing the darkness or negativity inside of him. He feels it coming on and doesn't like it. He wants the shine of happiness. |
Everclear – Sunflowers Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I've always thought this song is about a much younger sister. But his sister's kid as the subject works better with the line, "Your mom she said that you are just like me", so I'll go with that. |
Against Me! – Ache With Me Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I've been addicted to this song all day. Here's what I'm feeling from it: We all have struggles and frustrations and we grow weary of them as we get older. They contributed to the demise of the relationship but he doesn't blame her or himself. It's just the way it is and he doesn't expect to find answers or relief from the pain of life. During this period of sadness, he just wants the comfort of being close to her. |
Codeine Velvet Club – Hollywood Lyrics | 13 years ago |
In the version that I've heard on satellite radio, the first line in the second stanza is: "She smokes too much pot for the likes of me." I just got the album version and was surprised that it is different. Has anyone else noticed this or any other differences? |
The Tragically Hip – Flamenco Lyrics | 14 years ago |
What is "it"? It seems to be an element of her personality. Narcissism and ambition are two that may fit. This is some great poetry. Every stanza is thought-provoking. It goes well with the calm music. |
Telefon Tel Aviv – Bubble and Spike Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I've always thought it was: Life is beautiful Your smile But I can't see it that way We're absolute fucking miracles; every one of us. The existence of every form of complex life on this earth is amazing - even insects and plants - and we're the most advanced and amazing of all. I've had some beautiful moments in life, and shared many beautiful moments with beautiful people, but I don't even want to live inside my mind anymore despite the beauty around me. Life has simply become too complex to be enjoyable. |
James Blunt – Goodbye My Lover Lyrics | 14 years ago |
The live version on "Live in Toulouse" from the HDNet concert series is amazing. He puts a lot of emotion into his live performances. |
Dido – Quiet Times Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I think her lover is depressed and withdrawn. She loves him but she has given up hope that they'll be happy again together. |
Harry Nilsson – Without You Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I think he uses the term tomorrow because he could have had her in his future if he really wanted, but he let her go instead. It was for her own good, and it's what he thought he wanted, but the decision haunts him. I don't see death in the song. I see a painful breakup where both people still want to be together but have to give up on the relationship because they want different things out of life. They've known it for a long time but they hang on because they love each other. Eventually, they conclude that they both have to move on to get what they want out of life. I'm not even going to try to pretend I'm not talking about myself here. It's a powerful song, and I think it's general enough to apply to many lovesick situations. |
Matthew Good – Odette Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I can relate. I'm frequently mentally exhausted but unable to sleep, with thoughts racing through my head and my body feeling like it wants to do something physical. My body prefers to be awake at night. I find this song very soothing. |
Neverending White Lights – Always Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I have the same interpretation as tabularasa. I pushed her away many years ago and I've always wanted for her to return and I always will, even though the relationship would be as futile now as it was then. This song does hit me like a train. |
Matthew Good – 99% of Us Is Failure Lyrics | 15 years ago |
"When we were young and hit like hammers I'd write the nails in your hands When 99% of us is failure There's no going back" I agree with chrisbourgeois about the hammer line, and I think he's also saying that he was the creative force while his friend was the one who would put the idea into action. But now, it seems they can do nothing to improve their situation and they're emotionally falling apart. |
The Dead Milkmen – Watching Scotty Die Lyrics | 15 years ago |
A song that is both amusing and sad, about the effects of pollution on our health. I certainly expect to see increasing cancer rates and other genetic malfunctions from all the toxins we're exposed to. I remember this being a favorite song of a fifth-grade friend. He listened to Dead Milkmen in-between all the Anthrax and Metallica. |
Shakespear's Sister – Stay Lyrics | 15 years ago |
"if this world is wearing thin and you're thinking of escape i'll go anywhere with you i'll do anything it takes [just wrap me up in chains] but if you try to go alone don't think i'll understand" This really sounds like a suicide song to me. My girlfriend has told me that if I ever decide to go, she wants to come with me. I didn't know what to say; death is such a personal thing and I don't know that I'd want her involved, but she'd be pretty upset if I just left her here. That's how this song relates to me, despite the fact that I first heard it when it was a MuchMusic regular about 10 years before I met her. "you'd better hope and pray that you'll be safe [that you make it safe] in your own world [back to your own world] . . ." I think this part is about the unknown aspect of death. Are you actually going to be in a better position after death? Will death "break the spell", and will anybody be there to hear your cries in the afterlife? |
Kreesha Turner – Dont Call Me Baby Lyrics | 15 years ago |
This song sounds a lot like Def Leppard's "Love Bites" to me. I don't want to touch you too much baby (Stop Running Baby Cause You`ve Run Outta Time) Cause making love to you might drive me crazy (Stop Asking You Know All The Reasons Why) I know you think that love is the way you make it (Stop Staring Through Me Like You Know Who I Am) But I don't want to be there when you decide to break it (When You Don`t Know Me, You Don`t Know Me, Barely Knew Me Then) |
Neverending White Lights – Of All the Things You've Done Wrong Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I see this song as sort of a parody of inspirational Christian music. The synthesizer demo music and cheesy singing would fit perfectly in a tuesday night local church concert. The lyrics describe the absurdity of rationalizing war by believing that God supports the soldiers and the killing of others, and that the war is God's plan and therefore God is on everyone's side because he wants these other people to die and suffer for the greater good. |
Matthew Good – Avalanche Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I see the highs and lows of life: the monotony followed by the rush. It's a highly emotional song briefly covering a lot of topics that are affecting his ability to function in this world. Confusion, evil in the form of charm, self destruction, self improvement, destroying the world while building it into our modern way, selfishness, inheriting the good and the evil left behind by past generations, and trying to find a reason or distraction to maintain a positive mindset and keep going. |
