Like some previous commenters above, I was ignorant of "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" prior to reading these entries. However, I am to alter that and will look into the epistolary novel.
I have long thought this song to be under-rated. It's very simple and its sound as well as lyrics I find to be rather profound and poetic. I found the song years ago as I have always been a fan of the so-called "shoegaze" genre, whence Ride's "Nowhere" album belongs. This song is most certainly an album-ender. |

No comments? This is one of my favorite Eurythmics songs and it's certainly one of their more under-rated ones. Lennox's eerie repetition of the song's title throughout, Stewart's unforgettable guitar, and the slightly spooky, seemingly ethereal fade out to the song's end combine to form a great piece of 1980s pop. While this album (titled the same as this song) was not the group's strongest, this piece, along with "You Have Placed a Chill in My Heart", "Shame", and "I Need a Man" create some of the groups best later work. |

Once again, no comments on this very solid Siouxsie & The Banshees song? This is one of the darker songs on Superstition (1991) and serves as something of a foil for "Kiss Them for Me" and "Fear (of the Unknown)". Fantastic stuff, for certain. |

I must agree with the aforementioned sentiments. This is unquestionably Fleetwood Mac's saddest song. The lyrics are moving, the tone is so plaintive, and it sticks with you. Few songs are, from start to finish, this much of a downer. Lines like "So I try to say / Goodbye my friend" and "I should have known from the first / I'd be the broken-hearted" are unfortunately all too familiar to many of us. Quality. |

Tough to see this as something other than sexual, particularly given the pause at 3:23 (the orgasm) and Siouxsie Sioux's accompanying grunt at 3:26. |

I do not mean to take anything away from any of the comments noted above---the song is uniquely personal for all its listeners---but let's stay on point here: the song lyrics are inspired by the great 1934 poem by Dylan Thomas called "I See The Boys of Summer...", a poem also, appropriately enough, about lost youth:
I see you boys of summer in your ruin.
Man in his maggot's barren.
And boys are full and foreign in the pouch.
I am the man your father was.
We are the sons of flint and pitch.
O see the poles are kissing as they cross.
Without getting mired in analytical and poetical detail outside the scope of this comment, suffice it to say that the narrator sets before the reader a notion of passing time and that before we know it we are grown up and our youthful times have poignantly passed us by; we vainly yearn for them to return: "...let us summon / Death from a summer woman... Here love's damp muscle dries and dies..." |

SWR's sophomore effort This Is Forever (2007) appears not to have disappointed, and I believe this song is this album's crowning achievement. Like their last album's "Tear You Apart" and others, SWR sings of relationships' many happenstances, both whimsical and perilous. Definitely one of the finest bands making music today. |

This song has always been a secret favorite of mine, despite its seemingly poppy sound. I read and listen to it to mean how, when the sun sets, the moon rises, and the night falls, something about your mind and your mode of thinking differs. One becomes more plaintive, contemplative, and creative ("Your changeling song takes shape") after night has fallen ("Shadowtime"). |

Wow, no one has commented on this song in almost two years. We must be careful not to forget this song (although those who know it never will).
One of great and often unstated facets of Joy Divison lyrics is that they frequently can be read almost as stand-alone poems which happen to be set to music. This song in particular I have always loved, partly for that reason. The lyrics maintain roughly an iambic tetrameter beat which allow for it readability.
I have little to add to the above comments. This remains in my mind of one of Joy Division's most sombre and haunting songs (and there were many they did). Requiescat in pace, Ian. |

One thing we learn from JD's songwriting history is the way in which their lyrics can be interpreted to reflect broad conclusions or notions of humanity. In this instance, we can think of the "candidate" in this song not just as someone offering themselves up for a political office or in a position of public service (which is a valid reading) but also as a human "offering" or attempting to assimilate himself with the reality which surrounds him. We can see this in the lines "What gave me the right / To mess with your values / And change wrong to right". This is a damning assessment by the "candidate" (the man) of his "voters" (fellow humans). |

Either way, this song is a fine example of classic 1980s musical talent at work! I can't believe no one has commented on this song. Like Joy Division's "Decades", which closes out Closer (1980), this song has to rank up there as being one of the great album-enders of all album-enders. |
