Savage Lyrics

Words of power are killing me
While the sun displays its teeth.
All mockery is laughing
All violence is cheap.
She said...
"These are my guns
These are my furs
This is my living room."
"You can play with me there sometimes
If you catch me in the mood."

She said...
"I have this unhappiness
To wear around my neck."
"It's a pretty piece of jewellery
To show what I protect."
She said...
"Everything is fiction
All cynic to the bone."
"So don't ask me to stay with you
Don't ask to see me home."

No comments? This is one of my favorite Eurythmics songs and it's certainly one of their more under-rated ones. Lennox's eerie repetition of the song's title throughout, Stewart's unforgettable guitar, and the slightly spooky, seemingly ethereal fade out to the song's end combine to form a great piece of 1980s pop. While this album (titled the same as this song) was not the group's strongest, this piece, along with "You Have Placed a Chill in My Heart", "Shame", and "I Need a Man" create some of the groups best later work.

My Opinion

Absolutely agree with you tad482. The song seems to me about the exploitation of women by men and the vulnerability caused by this.

She said..Everything is fiction ...all cynic to the bone.

Those three lines are so simple, yet convey so much. I think Annie Lennox is a very under-rated lyricist and Dave Stewart a great song writer.

Agreed - it's brilliant. I agree with Cool4Cats on it being about exploitation - especially exploitation that comes in the guise of "something good for you", like protection or civilization.

The image I always got from it was of a British woman living in a British colony (at some point in history). Her people are supposedly bringing better civilization and better religion and better ways of living to the local "savages", but in reality it's the colonials who are the savages. The lines about her guns and furs reminds me of British settlers hunting animals just for...

I think song meanings can and should differ from person to person but this is what I think:

While the sun displays its teeth.

It refers to a person who is so emotionally tired that she cannot process input any more. The bright happy sun is too much. She wants silence and darkness.

She said, "These are my ...."

She is in a position of wealth but does not disfruit it.

"You can play with me there sometimes, If you catch me in the mood."

You can have sex with me, but I do not want to be in a relationship any more.

Savage. = Both the person who hurt her and the other person she uses for sex.

She said,"I have this unhappiness..."

Referring so a trauma and the reason she cannot be in a relation.

"So don't ask me to stay with you Don't ask to see me home."

Don't start a relation with me, do not enter my world.

Yes my explanation refers to my condition, of course.
