I’d seen ‘Marathon Man’, and I was really intrigued by the guy swallowing diamonds to keep them, and then realising it was like swallowing glass - that they would pass through his system and tear him apart. The lyrics here are wrong.
Siouxsie says it's about the feeling of being in the gutter but looking up at the stars. In other words, hope in a dark place. It also makes me think of loss, somehow...
Very cynical. At first I thought there might be something beautiful at the root of this song- but I think its about how hollow a Columbine victory could be. Very, very, hollow.

I always loved the line "index and thumb Pull some strings, let them sing" It means two things to me. First: you play the Bass by pulling the strings with index and thumb fingers" Secondly: A doctor stitching a wound does it with his index and thumb... .the sing is the scream...
