Bruce Springsteen – Merry Christmas Baby Lyrics 16 years ago
Sure the song was originally written amd performed by Charles Brown (as a very slow blusy song). But Bruce (and the E Street Band) rock it up and quite nicely. Easily stands besides their version of "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town." as a great Christmas song.

Bruce Springsteen – No Surrender Lyrics 16 years ago
Whenever I hear this song, I am immediately transported to June 4, 1984. The day the album (Born in the USA) was released, WBCN in Boston played the album in its entirety. It was a warm summer's day as I and my (teenage) friends sat by the pool and listened. Talk about being blown away! And this song really touched me. Even more so now with a feeling of nostalgia of those days now long gone.
"Well now young faces grow sad and old
And hearts of fire grow cold.
We swore blood brothers against the wind
I'm ready to grow young again.
And hear your sister's voice calling us home
Across the open yards......"
Beautiful, magical, memorable!

Bruce Springsteen – Ricky Wants A Man of Her Own Lyrics 16 years ago
Don't know when Bruce wrote this song, but as the father of a girl, I can sympathize. Obviously, Ricky is a young girl (15?16?) and her parents still think of her as their "little" girl. But she has grown up and wants her independence, much to her parents dismay. For those of you who are parents, this song must ring true and for those of us who were once teens like Ricky, you understand as well.

Bruce Springsteen – Downbound Train Lyrics 16 years ago
What I like about Springsteen is he pulls no punches in his songs. He knows that not everyone leads a happy life. People fall out of love, people lose their jobs, people go to jail; bad things do happen and usually to otherwise decent people. Here he explores what happens to a couple to whom life had dealt a bad hand in the poker game of life. Depressing sure, true to life, ABSOLUTELY. If you love Springsteen, you love him because he DOES sing songs like these. A great song from the one of the best albums of the 80's.

Bruce Springsteen – Working On The Highway Lyrics 16 years ago
The ultimate working man song from the Boss. Here is a guy who works his ass off all day on the highway. He (like most of us) is dreaming about a better life, meeting the right girl and settling down. And then when he finally meets the right girl, her father does not approve (methinks she may not be of the age of consent, maybe 17?) So they take off for Florida for a new life together, but they get found and he gets put away. And then in the ironic ending, he finds himself back working on the highway, but on a chain gang. Great fun song!

Bruce Springsteen – Used Cars Lyrics 16 years ago
The song reflects the shame one feels (usually at an age when you are self conscience about everything) about having to buy a used car. Once again Springsteen spins lyrical poetry in his words. The line about the the saleman looking at his old man's hands tells us volumes. That his dad is a laborer and the salesman knows he has him in a corner. The bitterness a teen feels at their parents for making him suffer this humiliation (A Used CAR, the horror). Great, great stuff from the BOSS.

Bruce Springsteen – I Wish I Were Blind Lyrics 16 years ago
Much like any of the songs that came out of MOTOWN in the 60's and 70's (I Wish it Would Rain , Just My Imagination), it tells that story of a man longing for a woman he can not have. Whether she was once his girl or not, we do not know. All we know is that his heart is surely breaking.

Bruce Springsteen – Radio Nowhere Lyrics 16 years ago
Heard this song a few times and it is classic Bruce. You could argue that he thinks the state of music (and radio) today is not what it used to be (which personally I would agree with), I think as we all get older we tend to think that the music of our youth was the best. You could also argue that he is talking about right wing talk radio. He doesn't want to hear their BS, he wants music dammit!

Bruce Springsteen – Glory Days Lyrics 16 years ago
Great song about any dick you meet in your life who can't help remembering and retelling ad nauseum the one time in their life (usually before they turned 25) when they had it all (Glory Days). Anytime any of my friends start recounting some story I've heard for the millionth time about some girl they laid or some sproting event they triumphed at YEARS ago, I break into the refrain of this song. Heard IT, now move on with your life. And I like how Bruce hopes (though will probably fail) he never starts retelling his Glory Days stories.

Bruce Springsteen – Sherry Darling Lyrics 16 years ago
Great fun song from The River. Bruce sings about the problems all men face with their girlfriends (or wives) and that's the girl's mother! He's rwached hi slimit with his girl's mother and is ready (in spite of his love for his girl) to let her hoof it home. And even though he loves her, he can only take so much of her mother, especially with so many other girls to choose from (on the beach). The song is an ultimatum to his girl....your mother has got to go or I go!

Bruce Springsteen – Thunder Road Lyrics 16 years ago
I know Rock and Roll isn't poetry but this song comes damn close! Proof positive why the Boss is the best lyricist in rock and roll. No need to try and find meanings in this song. As you can see by the comments from everyone else who has posted, it means something special to them....and me too!

Bruce Springsteen – Nebraska Lyrics 16 years ago
Bruce's take on what creates a serial killer. In this case, 50's killer Charlie Starkweather and his girlfriend. Very straightforward in its imagery. Even though he is a stone cold killer, you can hear the pathos in the music and the lyrics. And Bruce sums up why evil things happen in our lives in the final line of the song "Well sir I guess there's just a meanness in this world."

Bruce Springsteen – Reason To Believe Lyrics 16 years ago
Personally I find this one of Springsteen's most touching songs. Haunting in its portrayal of people clinging to hope in the face of adversity and life's way of kicking you in the a**. Terrific, powerful song. I agree with Mobstaclique, the version from the live box set is awesome.

Bruce Springsteen – Hungry Heart Lyrics 16 years ago
Great song off The River. The music is so upbeat but the lyrics are not. A man up and leaves his family. Certainly not admirable, but like many of Springsteen's characters in his music, it reflects real life

Bruce Springsteen – Darlington County Lyrics 16 years ago
A song about two friends from The CITY heading out looking for work. Probably about 18 or 19, an uncle has hooked them up with an out of town connection. But like most young men, girls are never far from their minds. They try all their charms and maybe a few white lies to see if they can hook up with these beauties. But being young and stupid (we were all that once), his buddy got arrested. I like to think it was for something reckless (fighting in a bar over the girl he met) rather than something more nefarious (sexual assault).

Bruce Springsteen – Stolen Car Lyrics 16 years ago
No one empathizes more with the down and outer than Springsteen. Here we have a guy who married his sweetheart but as Bruce knows, real life doesn't have happy endings. They are not as close as they were, they have been driven apart from each other, and in an act of deperation, he steals a car. Desperate people do desperate things. Is he hoping this act will bring his love back to him? And the final line in the song, is he contemplating suicide? A truly sad song, yet it rings true in the real world.

Bruce Springsteen – Out In the Street Lyrics 16 years ago
Great song from The River! It's a song about being young and free, with a few bucks in your pocket after a long hard week at work and the only thing you are looking forward to is the weekend, with your girl by your side. There is no boss (no pun intended)who is going to tell you what to do, no authority to rule over you (except for the the blacks and whites), but even that doesn't matter. Just a song about being free for 48 hours (the weekend) to do what YOU want.

Bruce Springsteen – Brilliant Disguise Lyrics 16 years ago
Great song about the doubts one faces in love. Does she/he love me? Do I love him/her? It was written around the time of first marriage and clearly Bruce has come to the realization that it was a mistake. The final verse is so sad...."Tonight our bed is cold..." A man who now doubts his love for his woman.

Bruce Springsteen – Ramrod Lyrics 16 years ago
Great party song by Bruce and The E Street band! Bruce sings about his two favorites things (his car and his girl). Stephen King recently (in Entertainment Weekly) names this as one of the 25 greatest rock songs ever. I qoute Mr King, "His cleanest, coolest purest track...."I would have to agree (along with most of Bruce's other rock songs!)

Bruce Springsteen – Born in the U.S.A. Lyrics 16 years ago
One of the Boss' most popular if not, arguably, his best. Pure genius on his part to turn the song into a rock anthemn. I don't think it would have been as popular it he had played it low key as he now tends to do in concert. Unfortunately, most people only heard the BORN IN THE USA refrain and missed the bitter lyrics. The narrator of the song describes his sorry circumstances in the opening lyrics, then describes how he was forced into the service (in those days if you got in a "hometown jam" you were given two choices, jail or the armed services). He served his country in Vietnam, but then like many vets, came back to empty words and forgotten promises (the refinery, the VA man). Bruce saw the plight of the Vietnam vet and how America treated him after the vets has honorably served in a war they didn't have a choice about. Kind of like Iraq today (Not enough equipment, men coming back to the sorry state of the Walter Reed hospital etc)

Bruce Springsteen – If I Should Fall Behind Lyrics 16 years ago
A beautiful song above love and what it means to two people. It's a difficult journey with lots of roadblocks and problems along the way. But if one should fall behind, the other will wait for them, just as it should be in life. It's such a great song, my wife and I used it for our wedding song. And many people complimented us on it. Just terrific!

Bruce Springsteen – The River Lyrics 16 years ago
One the best songs written by the Boss, from the album of the same name. Powerful stuff! When he wrote this song, America was in the depths of recession as steel mills and car factories shut down and laid off people. The song is about a young man who marries his sweetheart but as so often happens in Springsteen songs, things just don't work out as planned. Forget Born in the USA, if you want a song that says THIS IS AMERICA, then you have found it here. Powerful, poignant and beautiful.

Bruce Springsteen – I'm A Rocker Lyrics 16 years ago
I couldn't agree with you more Nagromnai! What a great, great song this is! It Rocks AND Rolls. The Boss and the E Street Band really pull it together on this one. A guy has lost his girl and Bruce (The Rocker named in the song) will do WHATEVER it takes to get her back. Like James Bond, he is ready for his difficult assignment (I got a double 0 7 watch....it's got an I spy beeper...). And I love that last verse..."So you fell for some jerk who was tall dark and handsome....."A CLASSIC!

Bruce Springsteen – Fade Away Lyrics 16 years ago
Lyrically, there is no one better than Springsteen. Think back to the time you had someone you loved break up with, how you felt. The heartache, the pining away for that person. He captures it perfectly in this song
