Much like any of the songs that came out of MOTOWN in the 60's and 70's (I Wish it Would Rain , Just My Imagination), it tells that story of a man longing for a woman he can not have. Whether she was once his girl or not, we do not know. All we know is that his heart is surely breaking.
i can relate to this song very much so it's such a beautiful hertbreaking song,though prefer the version on the plugged cd/dvd
As rmcd0494 pointed out, it's basically about a guy who's hung up on a woman he can't have and it's taken all of the good out of life. This song's playing on the same ideas as 'Man's Job'. In that song he's obsessed with a woman who is being taken out by another guy. In both songs he sees them dancing and in both songs all his dreams get brought down. In man's job he sings 'all my illusions slip away'. In this song he sings 'these eyes that once filled me with beauty now fill me with pain'.
It's a heartbreaking situation to be in - you want someone so bad, you think you're showing them just about all the love anyone can ever want...and they choose someone else. I'm not sure if everyone who's going to read this has been in the same kind of mess but I sure as hell have.
