Out In the Street Lyrics

Put on your best dress baby
And darlin', fix your hair up right
Cause there's a party, honey
Way down beneath the neon lights
All day you've been working that hard line
Now tonight you're gonna have a good time

I work five days a week girl
Loading crates down on the dock
I take my hard earned money
And meet my girl down on the block
And Monday when the foreman calls time
I've already got Friday on my mind

When that whistle blows
Girl, I'm down the street
I'm home, I'm out of my work clothes
When I'm out in the street
I walk the way I wanna walk
When I'm out in the street
I talk the way I wanna talk
When I'm out in the street
When I'm out in the street

When I'm out in the street, girl
Well, I never feel alone
When I'm out in the street, girl
In the crowd I feel at home
The black and whites they cruise by
And they watch us from the corner of their eye

But there ain't no doubt girl, down here
We ain't gonna take what they're handing out
When I'm out in the street
I walk the way I wanna walk
When I'm out in the street
I talk the way I wanna talk
Baby, out in the street I don't feel sad or blue
Baby, out in the street I'll be waiting for you

When the whistle blows
Girl, I'm down the street
I'm home, I'm out of my work clothes
When I'm out in the street
I walk the way I wanna walk
When I'm out in the street
I talk the way I wanna talk

When I'm out in the street
Pretty girls, they're all passing by
When I'm out in the street
From the corner, we give them the eye

Baby, out in the street I just feel all right
Meet me out in the street, little girl, tonight
Meet me out in the street
Meet me out in the street

Great celebratory song. It was so appropriate that he played this on the E Street reunion tour in the late 90s.

It's the kind of song that makes every feel like a winner, and that summed up the mood of seeing the band together.

Back when he wrote it, the song was about the working class guys who had little to celebrate except when the whistle blows and they could be out on the street. It just emotes a great feeling.

i think "blacks and whites" refers to people who are miserable and dont have color in their lives who are judging the young adults having fun "out of the corner of their eyes. i dont think it relates to race

"Black and whites" are police cars. See "Working on the Highway".

"Black and whites" are also cookies at my local deli, dipped in white and dark chocolate. But cookies can't cruise by.

Definitely one of my favourite Springsteen songs. It's so true... "When I'm out in the street, I walk the way I wanna walk/When I'm out in the street, I talk the way I wanna talk."

I think it's about the freedom that comes with being your average guy, and when you're "out in the street" with everyone else, you can be whoever you would like to be.

Great song from The River! It's a song about being young and free, with a few bucks in your pocket after a long hard week at work and the only thing you are looking forward to is the weekend, with your girl by your side. There is no boss (no pun intended)who is going to tell you what to do, no authority to rule over you (except for the the blacks and whites), but even that doesn't matter. Just a song about being free for 48 hours (the weekend) to do what YOU want.

This song was used on the "Reign Over Me" soundtrack where Adam Sandler is actually playing the drums to this song. In an interview, Adam Sandler said that Out in the Street was the first song he learned to play along with. This is a great song that reminds me of the intensity that the album Born to Run has.
