No Surrender Lyrics
Well, we busted out of class
Had to get away from those fools
We learned more from a three-minute record, baby
Than we ever learned in school
Tonight I hear that neighbourhood drummer sound
I can feel my heart begin to pound
You say you're tired and you just want to close your eyes
And follow your dreams down
Refrain:
Well, we made a promise, swore we'd always remember
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Like soldiers on a winter's night with a vow to defend
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Well now young faces grow sad and old
And hearts of fire grow cold
We swore blood brothers against the wind
I'm ready to grow young again
And hear your sister's voice calling us home
Across the open yard
Maybe we'll find someplace of our own
With these drums and these guitars
Refrain
Lay lay lay lay...
Now, on the streets tonight, the light's grow dim
The walls of my room are closing in
There's a war outside still raging
You say it ain't ours anymore to win
I want to sleep beneath the peaceful skies
In my lover's bed
With that wild open country in our eyes
And those romantic dreams in my head
(Refrain)
Had to get away from those fools
We learned more from a three-minute record, baby
Than we ever learned in school
Tonight I hear that neighbourhood drummer sound
I can feel my heart begin to pound
You say you're tired and you just want to close your eyes
And follow your dreams down
Well, we made a promise, swore we'd always remember
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Like soldiers on a winter's night with a vow to defend
No retreat, baby, no surrender
And hearts of fire grow cold
We swore blood brothers against the wind
I'm ready to grow young again
And hear your sister's voice calling us home
Across the open yard
Maybe we'll find someplace of our own
With these drums and these guitars
The walls of my room are closing in
There's a war outside still raging
You say it ain't ours anymore to win
I want to sleep beneath the peaceful skies
In my lover's bed
With that wild open country in our eyes
And those romantic dreams in my head

"We learned more from a three-minute record baby, than we ever learned in school"
There's so much truth to that line right there.
Whenever I hear this song, I am immediately transported to June 4, 1984. The day the album (Born in the USA) was released, WBCN in Boston played the album in its entirety. It was a warm summer's day as I and my (teenage) friends sat by the pool and listened. Talk about being blown away! And this song really touched me. Even more so now with a feeling of nostalgia of those days now long gone. "Well now young faces grow sad and old And hearts of fire grow cold. We swore blood brothers against the wind I'm ready to grow young again. And hear your sister's voice calling us home Across the open yards......" Beautiful, magical, memorable!
This song is inspirational to me. I love it.
Bruce Springsteen is a true American songwriter. He romanticises the American Dream unlike anyone else can.
alternate lyrics, from the Live 1975-1985 cds:
Well, we busted out of class Had to get away from those fools We learned more from a three-minute record, baby, Than we ever learned in school Tonight I hear that neighborhood drummer sound I can feel my heart begin to pound You say you're tired and you just want to close your eyes And follow your dream down
Well, we made a promise, we swore we'd always remember No retreat, baby, no surrender Like soldiers on a winter's night with a vow to defend No retreat, baby, no surrender
Well now young faces grow sad and old And hearts of fire grow cold We swore blood brothers against the wind Now I'm ready to grow young again And hear your sister's voice calling us home Across the open yards Believin’ we could cut some place of our own With these drums and these guitars
’Cause we made a promise, swore we’d always remember No retreat, baby, no surrender Blood brothers on a summer’s night with a vow to defend No retreat, baby, no surrender
Now, out on the streets tonight, the lights are growing dim The walls of my room are closing in Now we can sleep in the twilight By the river bed With this wild open country in our hearts And those romantic dreams in my head
‘Cause we made a promise, we swore we’d always remember No retreat, baby, no surrender Blood brothers on a summer’s night with a vow to defend No retreat, baby, no surrender No retreat, baby, no surrender.
what a gorgeous song. my goodness. makes me wish my friends and i could stay like this forever. at the beginning of this live version, he says, "this one's for friendship." and that about sums it up.
Let the following 2 lines to be melt in your mouth:
There is war outside still raging you say it aint ours anymore to win
This is for me the most beautiful song lyrics ever. It has a very deep and spiritual meening! It says that we should take our attension away from the bad things on this world like war or politics, and send our energy to the positive, to the beautiful, to love. So we can really change the world! Amazing!
There is this story of a little Indian boy asking his father if human beings are good or bad. So the father said everybody has a good wolf and a bad wolf inside themself. They are fighting togheter. So the boy asked who will win and the father replied the one you are feeding more!!!! This2 lines just mention this truth. I don't now much Burce Springsteen has been aware of that, but at least intuitively, this is genious by him!
Oh my God I definitely ADORE this song. It keeps me going on in my blue times when I feel alone and impotent and useless....Then I put this on and singing with the Boss makes me become stronger and happier. I swear,it's healing!!!
The version on the live cd is even better than the regular version.
This song was John Kerry's campaign theme song for his failed 2004 presidential campaign.
As a freshman in college (Ex-Senior in HS) this might be the greatest school right now. This song speaks to me in so many ways. In one way I hear "forget school its useless" and at the same time I take it personally and think "forget the losers back home, go make something out yourself" and I can also think of me and my boys from back in Jersey gettin together and makin' it big somewhere. Wow, absolutely amazing song.
