I do not understand the the basset hound reference. If anyone wants to take a stab at it, please do. The last verse is phenomenal. |

I've been listening to this song for years and I'm starting to hear a lot of symbolism revolving around ecstasy, does anyone get that? I understand there is a lot of indication of drug and alcohol abuse but the first verse really screams ecstasy abuse, to me. Thoughts? |

As we'll all eventually find out, those who cheat tend to accuse the other of doing so, even if it's completely false.
As some of you have said, I definitely believe this song is about a woman accusing a man of cheating and inevitably ended the relationship. When she was ready to come back to him, he had already moved on and with all the resentment of being accused of such an awful deed, he no longer cares for the woman he once loved.
I do believe that most of us have been in something similar... I know that I have! |

To me, this seems like someone wants to get away [hawaii just seems like an example of somewhere far off] and know no one, start over, and just live. Almost like it's all imaginary. |

I've never heard this version before, but the one I have is similar.. What I get out of it is that [even though Damien wrote this..] she feels as if he is only in the relationship out of habit. she's just there because that's the way it is. she's noticed how it seems more like a routine rather than an ongoing relationship. |

this is the utmost depressed, almost crazy part of a breakup. Not understanding what was wrong, not knowing it was going to happen, then realizing that it's done and over and that perhaps he's just not good enough.

This actually sounds like a song he made up to sing to her, perhaps on the phone, or at a picnic. |

What I get out of this is that the woman is waiting on some kind of commitment, perhaps marriage and has been completely closed off to the man and he's obviously not ready and is convinced she'd be better off without him.
Then on the other hand it looks as though she's finally fessed up to perhaps cheating on him, and is waiting for him to make a decision as to what happens in the relationship and he refuses to decide, so he says she just has to leave. |

Perhaps this about an the writer listening, or seeing the ex being taken advantage of, in general. Feeling sorry for her, but then realizing it's best they're not together anymore. |

This is NOT the meaning, but it reminds me of best friends in high school; doing stupid shit together, one gets caught, the other figures out a way to save his/her ass. |

Sounds like a love triangle to me.
"'Cause he wants her, and she wants me
And we wanna be with the one that we need
And he wants her, and she wants me
And we all wanna be with the one that we need
And he wants what she wants
And I wanna be with the one who thinks I'm her brother"
So this guy wants her, and she want the writer, and they're all obviously in need of SOMEONE, but the writer feels that he needs to look after her like a brother would look after another sibling [a sister, especially] yes, he wants to be the one with her.
The third paragraph makes me think of how crazy people act trying to be, or staying with the one that they say they love [or do in fact love] and do things that they normally wouldn't do.
The last two lines are strange to me, it's almost as if he's questioning the whole thing. Does he really want to be her brother [metaphoric to look after her] or maybe she's starting to think of him like that, rather than a lover.
I go back and forth. |

I believe this song is about a man that falls for a woman, but all he can do is be physical with her, though he wants something more out of it, but he's too shy.. She seems to fall for him but he makes himself unavailable for the time being.. like he's waiting until he feels comfortable.
that may not make sense to some of you, but it makes a lot of sense to me. |

To me, it seems like t his person wants to move on from whomever but wants to do it at his own pace, and even though he is trying to get over her, she's leaving and not letting him have closure. |
